The “Water Cooler” is a feature on Claycord.com where we ask you a question or provide a topic, and you talk about it.

The “Water Cooler” will be up Monday-Friday at noon.

QUESTION: What local roads, streets, etc. do you purposely avoid, and why do you avoid them? (example: too much traffic, bumpy road, potholes, long traffic signals, crime, etc.)

.
Depends on the time of day or year.
.

YVR is the price you pay for living in Clayton, which we’ve done for over 45 years. I figure I’ve driven over 150,000 miles on YVR so far. At least I can avoid YVR commute traffic most of the time now.

If I have advanced warning of a delay, such as road work, or an accident, I will probably try to avoid it as much as possible. Other than that, I usually take the shortest route when traveling from point A, to point B.

I swear by the Waze app for up to date info. Monument sucks lately. Willow Pass Rd… has sucked for over a decade. Farm Bureau from Clayton to Walnut.
But if you want to experience a war torn road, Granada Drive off Willow Pass Rd. Winner winner chicken dinner.

CONCORDMIKE~
HA! So True!! Granada Drive …. it the only way out of the Court I live on.

Willow Pass Rd. Landana to hwy 4, I will NOT drive that road after dark. The history of that span of wpass freaks me out.

Monument blvd. And that new “pedestrian bypass” = TOTAL WASTE. Interesting how the original two lanes are now more like 1 1/2 lanes.
Hwy 4. Speedway Racetrack with ZERO CHP enforcement…….unless there’s a wrong way driver death, then All of California CHP is onsite!!!

… in order…. 1. Meadow Lane – road is terrible 2. YVR – needs repaving from San Miguel east all the way to the WC border past Oak Grove 3. Treat Bl – needs repaving 4. Road in front of Clayton Valley Charter (Alberta Way) – needs repaving

San Miguel Rd. Seems to be the bumpiest road in Concord. I avoid it if possible.

Everywhere this time of year

Marsh Creek Rd. due to safety concerns (i.e. head-on collision danger). Marsh Creek used to be our family “shortcut” to the San Joaquin Valley. Also, Ygnacio Valley Road during commute hours – don’t like gridlock.

Highway 4 between Bay point and Brentwood. Crazy speeders and freeway shootings. I’m out! I’ll spend extra driving time to avoid that clown show.

Don’t like Willow Pass Road from Landana Dr. up to Hwy 4.
Wiil go other routes to get to Hwy 4.

We don’t use that stretch of road because of high speed limit and head on danger.

Leaving Safeway at Denkinger Road behind the curve.

The one paved with good intentions

I avoid the high road, cause I wanna be in Scotland afore Ya’

It’s more like which ones I use and why. I use Clayton Road and Willow Pass almost exclusively. Rarely, Treat and Cowell. Mainly because they’re the only ones I know of that go to the places I want to go. Everywhere else in Concord is pretty much a mystery to me anymore. I’ve lived in the area since 1949 and nothing looks familiar the way it used to. I find it very hard to even think about driving down Concord Blvd, for example, because that’s where our Walnut orchards were located and I miss them.

I should specify that I don’t use Willow Pass North of Clayton Road. I make a left off of Clayton Road and take Willow Pass to The Willows, and that’s it. Coming back, I take Willow Pass to Clayton Road, make a right, and everything can generally be found on Clayton Road.

Avoid Bailey Rd like the plague – I’ve damaged TWO tires on that road.

I would like to avoid Farm Bureau Rd. because it is so bumpy, but I can’t really. It is the most direct way to get from my neighborhood–the Pt. Chi/Olivera Rd. area–to Clayton Rd. Farm Bureau used to be part of a route for trucks, which is why the road has taken so much abuse. I have a bad back and knees; driving on that road doesn’t help.

Any and all freeways as much as possible. People drive way too fast, don’t single when changing lanes, cut you off and are just plain rude and unsafe drivers. I give those people a wide berth. Leave a little early and get to your destination safely without putting yourself or others at risk.
