Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office Inundated With Concealed Weapon Permit Requests

The Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office says it has been “inundated” with requests for concealed carry weapon permits since a U.S. Supreme Court ruling in June that struck down New York state’s restrictions requiring applicants to give a compelling need to carry a concealed weapon in public.

The Sheriff’s Office said in a statement Thursday that the ruling in the case New York State Rifle and Pistol Association v. Bruen means California’s similar restrictions requiring concealed carry weapon permit applicants to demonstrate “good cause” were unconstitutional.

New staff positions recently approved by the county Board of Supervisors will be filled by people to help with more than 1,000 permit requests since July, sheriff’s officials said.

Before the ruling, the Sheriff’s Office received about 20 permit applications a month.

Obtaining a concealed weapon permit is a multi-step process requiring a detailed application, California Department of Justice fingerprints, background check, interview, and a training class.

There’s also a $160 fee, due after applicants complete the training.

The Sheriff’s Office already handles renewals for about 500 current concealed weapon permit holders.

Good luck getting a CCW permit in this county any time soon. They will delay and come up with any other made up reason they can think of to deny your application despite what the Supreme Court says. I have friends in El Dorado County that have had no problem getting a permit. Easy as pie if you can meet the requirements. Once you have it, its legal to carry throughout the whole State. Even in Contra Costa County. If you really want to carry then get an address in a less restrictive county or do like the bad guys and forgo the permit.

I read the details about the application process online. It’s not easy getting a permit.

The County Sheriffs Range Master has to approve the application and they can end the process for any reason.

Shall not be infringe this isn’t.

.
Then they should work much faster to clear the backlog, right?
.
Doesn’t anyone at the SO work as a legislative liaison? That’s a person who tracks and analyzes proposed laws or pending judicial decisions that may affect law enforcement or law enforcement administration?
.
GET TO WORK!!!

Then just carry.

Met plenty of folks who already do.

@BOB……It’s a misdemeanor much like a speeding ticket.

Only takes one juror to walk

I’m a senior citizen Desert Storm veteran, Spent 20 years as a paramedic in Oakland. It aint safe in my neighborhood or pretty much anywhere thanks to Diana Becton. If I choose to carry a firearm (Which I am trained to use) what they gonna do? Put a old man in jail????

“multi-step process requiring a detailed application, California Department of Justice fingerprints, background check, interview, and a training class.”

I submitted my paperwork/fingerprints and the Background checks completed 8/8/2022.

I have been waiting for the training and testing for OVER FOUR MONTHS.
I have heard NOTHING.

This is just another way to NOT issue CCW’s.

Joe

So much for “Shall” vs “May” issue.
