The “Water Cooler” is a feature on Claycord.com where we ask you a question or provide a topic, and you talk about it.
The “Water Cooler” will be up Monday-Friday at noon.
Today’s question:
Driving while talking or texting is already illegal, but should we also make it against the law to do other things that distract you while driving, like eating, reading, shaving, putting on makeup, etc.?
Talk about it….
No good if not enforced
It’s all so common place in America, they’re making self driving cars.
Hum, I think it should be common sense not to do most of those things while driving.
There are a few other things I can think of too.
Had a friend who use to drive with her cat in the car, and not in a carrier.
@Roz
I haven’t seen any cats yet, but many times I’ve seen little dogs behind the steering wheel, either on the driver’s lap or propped up on the armrest. I also knew someone who drove with one hand and played the harmonica with the other.
I have two small dogs that I have restrained in the seat next to me. If they weren’t restrained they would be in my lap or running all over the place.
Not safe!
@CYN….Being a truck driver for a number of years in my youth looking down into cars, people do a lot of things one-handed while driving.
@nytemuvr
I’m not even going to ask. 🙂
I’ve seen one handed drivers doing worse things than playing harmonica.
.
Most of those activities cited are technically illegal already under “distracted driving”.
.
Eating? Eating what?
.
Tacos – yes
Chips – no
Beef jerky – no
Donut – no
Candy bar – no
Sandwich – no
Peanuts and similar -no
….. Anything that require a utensil – YES
.
Let’s teach common sense instead of useless laws which micromanage every aspect of our daily lives.
not possible to teach “common sense” to people that have; overwhelming sense of self entitlement, can drive perfectly ok while doing those things, cant teach “me” how to drive, this is a free country and so on.
How about turning around facing backwards telling your kids in the back seat to behave while doing 70 on the freeway, I think I was guilty of that back then. My bet is texting is the biggest offense now.
Of course. Real men put their makeup on at home
Yes to the question. But enforcement won’t happen because all that would happen might be a ticket.
I used to play my harmonica while driving home from work – one-handed, of course.
@Ancient Mariner
That’s so funny……I just posted about knowing someone who used to do that. She used to tell me about all the strange looks she’d get.
There things are already illegal as distracted driving. Can’t remember the vehicle code right off hand.
The makeup thing especially! Putting that stuff on under the best of conditions takes talent. While driving, not so much! “Why is your eyeliner over your ear?” “Unexpected right turn.”
Hah. I still remember the moment when I was driving in the interchange lane between Hwy 4 and SB I-680 and realized the woman in the car in front of me was using tweezers to crimp her eyelashes while a big rig was bearing down on us from the EB Hwy 4 interchange merging lane. She didn’t have her eyes on the road at all until our lane straightened up.
I used to drive to Silicon Valley on a regular basis. After Loma Prieta, there was a lot more traffic on 680 and there was major construction going over the Sunol grade. So, a lot of people were stuck in traffic for a very long time. I saw a lot of folks doing makeup or shaving while stopped, but the prize goes to the woman who changed into a business suit. She didn’t seem to care that she was being watched.
