California will withhold $1 billion in funding until the state’s local governments develop new plans to reduce homelessness, Gov. Gavin Newsom said Thursday.
Newsom said he plans to meet with local officials across the state later this month to review the state’s approach to reducing homelessness and determine if new strategies are necessary, but until then the state will withhold funding from the Homelessness, Housing, Assistance and Prevention grant program.
The current plans submitted by every county in the state and 13 of its largest cities under the grant program would only reduce homelessness by 2 percent by 2024, according to Newsom, a rate he called a failure “to meet the urgency of this moment.”
“At this pace, it would take decades to significantly curb homelessness in California — this approach is simply unacceptable,” Newsom said in a statement. “Everyone has to do better — cities, counties, and the state included.”
The state has provided more than $1.5 billion to date across two rounds of HHAP grant funding. The funding is dispersed based on a state-approved plan submitted by each jurisdiction that reduces the number of unsheltered homeless residents and boosts permanent housing units.
Want to stop homelessness? Step one, close the borders. Step two, prosecute drug dealers. Step three, provide the addicts that can no longer find drugs on every street corner a path to rehabilitation.
But no, that makes too much sense. Let’s just throw money at it.
Step zero: withdraw any kind of state, county and city funding from so-called “homeless advocates”. The only thing they really advocate for is more homeless.
And re-open institutions that will house them all together and take them off the street so they stop causing harm.
Yup, that’ll work!
Seems like the state should come up with an idea of what to do with them. Gavin is shirking his duty. My first choice is find out what state they came from and ship them home.
They wouldn’t come here in the first place if we just stopped giving them so much for free.
Good!
Years ago, the SFPD Fire Chief said that the majority of the homeless on the streets of SF live in other states. I remember an interview with a man who said that he got paid to come here.
Isn’t great that the state will withold money in order to promote their agenda?
What a great way to enforce compliance.
Those darn city’s, always an excuse.
Tow the line city’s or the state will send in a battalion to encourgage you to do what your ordered to do.
This is the new normal.
Makes ya kinda wonder where the State got “their” money in the first place. Doesn’t it.
Build it and they will come. They are coming to this free-handout state faster than any policy will house them. Stop the hand-outs. Stop the migration.
You know, extortion
Gavin Newspeak pushing the communitarian agenda for his masters, a two tier society the ultra rich and the worker bees. Gotta have some place for the worker bees to live just not in the ultra rich backyards. Just watch, they’ll take your house so they can tear it down and make space for worker bee dorms. Sounds like sci-fi, eh?
However I doubt if their agenda is going to go anywhere since it is already beginning to fail. Yeah, we do need places for those made homeless due to employment problems to live out of. That can be solved but probably not in your backyard?
They have a drug injection sight in the city and they report saving over two hundred lives there. So the drug addicts can keep the drug dealers in business and continue to keep the addicts high. They have to know who the sellers are. Why don’t they dry up the market? The whole thing makes no sense.
Gavin self-absolving. Narcissism at its best.
Agree. I thing gruesome Newsome is trying to do is show/rack up some talking points in case he decides to run for president. Against prop 30, to show that he doesn’t want to suck money from ever increasing taxes. Withhold homeless money to show that he expects accountability (though never has been for him). He’s a clown that needs to be pushed aside. What a buffoon!!
They need to get real and divide the ‘homeless problem’. We have people that are seeking services, maybe living out of a car, these are the unhoused. We have street people (feral humans) that are mostly drug addicted, mentally ill based on drug and alcohol use. They don’t want to follow any rules, don’t want services, don’t want a tiny home. They want to live on the streets so they can stay on drugs, get food from the advocates (e.g. enablers) and maybe a shower. But mainly stay of the streets, yell into the air like crazy people, panhandle, make rule abiding, tax paying citizens feel unsafe, jump the gates to ride BART and stink up the train. The later need hospitals. They should be taken from streets, evaluated and detained for treatment we should not allow humans to live like feral cats.
Spot on, all but the shower part.
Reagan was up against the ACLU being sued constantly and Democrats legislation that wanted to change the protocols ( to what we have now), yet they blame him. They have had decades to undo what they supposedly blame Reagan for. Considering the state legislature has been Democrats and we have had numerous Democrat Governor’s.
Newsom back in March laid out a proposal to once again start forcing the mentally ill back into facilities and drug addicts into treatment, and of course this has to go to the legislature too, but the ACLU here in CA, already is balking at this…. Just like decades ago.
This is a state and federal issue and having each county and major city try to generate their own programs will create the musical chairs of homeless migrating to whoever has the most attractive program recently. I posted a few months ago the interview of a San Francisco homeless person who monthly gets $800 or $900 in cash and other benefits from the city, which kind of helps explain why they have so many homeless. It is disingenuous for Newsom to attempt to place responsibility or blame on local leaders when he had lots of resources and time to deal with the issue and failed. With this threat of withholding money, once again we see the standard theme of the focus being on how and where to shovel the taxpayer’s money, rather than in finding a solution.
You have to wonder what is going on when Newscum stops handing out free money.
You figure it has to be because they are doing what he told them to do. They are free-thinking and Newscum will not allow that. In Newscum’s world, free-thinking people are trouble because they are not following his plan. Newscum cannot have that, cause them the free-thinking people might cause a wave that will cause others to wake up. The only question I have now is, will enough of free-thinkers cause enough of a wave to vote Newscum out of his dictatorship so that WE THE PEOPLE can again be represented.
He is too dumb to actually do his job or solve anything, so he says this to pretend and hope the morons will vote for him. Like they always do.
gavvy should do as Governor what he did as mayor of sf, bus them out of state. When he was mayor, the program was called Homeward Bound (I think), and he would give the bums a one way ticket out of Dodge. Send them to NYC or to DC.
Should do that with the illegals too.
You cannot help people who don’t want help. This is just dumb.
Where did the $1 billion come from ? Could it be from us hard working tax payers. If so GIVE IT BACK!
This grease ball moron has to go!
Homelessness is just too big a business to go away. No one has a reason to end it too much profit in it. Good luck with all the ranting not going to help it’s not going to go away. Get the profit out and you just might actually do something but like that’s going to happen.
