Book report: A bit odd this time as there are two of them.

Mythology; Edith Hamilton; Illustrated by Steele Savage; 1940. Yes, there are various stories about the Greek and Roman gods. The Romans used most of the same ones as the Greek but gave them different names. There are stories about the various heroes, their wars, their travels and how the gods provoked or interfered with all of it. There is even a small section of Norse gods and heroes. It took a while to read this because the early paperbacks used a small print scale. Unless you are someone interested in mythology this is not a book I would recommend.

The Notebooks of Lazarus Long; Robert A. Heinlein, Illuminated by D. F. Vassallo, 1973 & 1978. This is a vary short booklet that is all exerts from various Heinlein stories that involve Lazarus long. It can be whizzed through in one sitting. Regular text on left page, illuminated text on the right page. If you like Heinlein stories this is a nice tidbit to add to a collection. But I’m not recommending this one because without reading the actual stories these are just odds and ends of short notes and one liners. The illumination is lovely but not needed.

Mythology sounds good. I took Greek Mythology my senior year in high school and enjoyed it. I like reading your book reports, Dorothy. Thank you. 🙂

– Mr. Don’s Landscape LITTER – Is it in your neighborhood?
Plastic bag with Mr Dons Landscape flyer inside. Thrown all over the neighborhood. In the street, in the gutters, on sidewalks, some driveways. Mr Dons number 925 470 6639. He needs to stop after these many many years of picking up his trash. Tired of this LITTER being thrown all over.
Mr. Don should be cited for his litter.

Pick One:

A) Corn Pudding
B) Spoon Bread
C) Yuck

@S
Another two options that I had to look up. I choose B). Seems closer to cornbread, which I like.

AHHhhh they’re both delicious

C) Yuck. I like corn, but not in a pudding.

My Aunt would visit from Minnesota every winter and she would make a corn pudding that I really liked. I wished I had the recipe.

2 thumbs up for your Aunt; ANON…

So many easy recipes available… Her being from MN… Look for mid-western styles….

My exposure is from southern roots….. but, I’ve never met a Corn Pudding I didn’t like….

Yet my answer to the Pick One shall come tomorrow….

Can’t you find the recipe, or one similar, on the ne Just try to type on corn pudding Minnesota recipe and see what comes up

El Torito puts a scoop of sweet corn cake on most of their meals. I’ve always liked that.

My VERY favorite youtube sites is Hillbilly Kitchen. She ain’t fancy… She’s better than fancy! Yes, she has the perfect recipe for Corn Pudding… and check out her chili skillet with cornbread baked on top…. FABULOUS winter foods.

@NO EXCUSES….We called that Tamale Pie, about a once a month meal as a kid….good “comfort food”.

Drum roll Please;

“B”

I like and make both, but seem to make “B” more often. With it I almost always make succotash.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PkhPuH8G5Hg

any one else?

@S…..I make succotash fairly often. I’ve been trying different cornbread recipes the last couple of years instead of the standard “Albers cornbread” recipe on the box. I change it up most of the time and have customized my own recipe….reading this thread makes me want to whip up a batch tonight.

Alexis Gabe, the Oakley woman who has been missing since January has finally been found. I think everyone already knew she was deceased, but at least her family can have some closure now.

Yes Jelly…the remains were partial and they believe all her remains will never be found. Sad indeed but at least the family has something. I could not even imagine.

Oh My. This is sad, but like others thought, this might have been the case.
Plus, Yes …the Family has closure now.

who else in downtown concord area is long since FED UP with the ridiculously loud cars ?
i have talked with various officers and keep getting the run around.
these hooligans are making a mockery of civility

Yes!
As I have mentioned before when I was first driving I got fix it tickets all the time for loud exhaust…. Headers and Cherry Bombs got me fix it tickets and were not even close to what you hear now!
And sounded better! Loved my Glasspacks too!

Any way we can get a number from the police or whoever on how many loud exhaust tickets are written?
My guess is next to none?

ive been trying to get the number for a commander of traffic division. it is a difficult situation. unlike on a race track where sound is monitored AND strictly enforced, police have the situational problem of being in the right place at the right time in order to get these clowns. also, simultaneously while making noise, they are reckless driving distracted driving, excessive speed, etc. but yeah, i too want to know how many of these citations have been written on a monthly basis.

Yep, those imports with the five inch tailpipes sound like poorly tuned outboard motors.

However given a choice I prefer them to the thumping rap music, and I apply the term “music” most liberally.
Earlier today in WC I observed a black Dodge with limo tint punishing its own windows with blaring rap. A pasty faced caucasian teen hopped out and holding his own pants up entered Whole Foods Market. Just another day in the upper middle class ‘hood.

And how about all the cars with blackened windows? I thought that was against the law.

does anybody remember back in the early ’90’s there was discussion in city council about banning blowers? it would be a very good thing for that topic to be brought up again

and currently, ridiculously loud cars are an “issue”

I’ve got a blower on my Chevelle and haven’t had any complaints. But hey, Rome wasn’t burned in a day……..

No no no no….. If you’re going to pick on people for making excessive noise, start with the drivers whose cars have the annoying booming sound systems blaring crap music laced with obscenities!
That’s gotta be a priority!

Even tho I have a 54 year old muscle car that produces an above average rumble, I would not be opposed to setting a decibel limit for vehicles… you could argue it’s a safety issue because some of them are ridiculously loud and distracting.

There should also be a requirement that electric cars should make enough noise that we can hear one coming before we get run over. OK, make it happen.

The legal limit for loud exhaust in California is 95 decibels, which is pretty loud considering a jackhammer is about 100 decibels. Police usually do not carry a decibel meter, so they would have to rely on their own judgment to determine if an exhaust system is over the limit. Issuing a ticket for loud exhaust is a waste of time, because without proof that the exhaust exceeded 95 decibels, it will be dismissed in court.

I was pulled over for loud exhaust back when in a ’70 GTO.
Office came to the divers side window and asked me to start the car.
I turned the key, foot off the gas, It sputtered but did not start.
He said that was good enough and wrote the fix it ticket.
No thought of going to court, we just did what was right back then…. when caught!

WRONG police cite excessive speed all the time w/o radar. also, while the morons are blasting their crap, they are also driving at around twice the speed limit. – – – hooligans

Greatly looking forward to the opening of Curry House in the Safeway shopping centre on Contra Costa Blvd. That’s the one further south with the Starbucks and Matsu Sushi, not the one up by the mall.
I love Naan ‘n’ Curry, but it’s a bit far and the parking’s a hassle. Swagat’s great, but it’s become too classy for a take-out place. The prices are high, but worth it for a nice sit-down restaurant, because the food’s so good.
Curry House sounds just like what I’m looking for – Indian fast food that’s good.
I can’t wait!

OOooo, take a drive out to El Sobrante…
Punjabi Kitchen; little whole in the wall & doesn’t look like much, but… Food is Most Excellent !
the online menu is not the full menu. It is worth the day out…

I’ll check it out the next time I’m out that way.
Thanks for the tip, S!

@S….I use to frequent a dive/biker bar in north Richmond back in the 70s. named “Hole in the Wall”. A friend lived close….cheap women and drinks, a scary place for sure.

Having read so many of your posts, I’ve come to the conclusion that you had a pretty good time in your younger days. 🙂

@CYN….It was the 60s/70s in the SF Bay, I made the most of it. No fun reminiscing about the bad times.

Couldn’t agree more.

Use to go to the grocery store in North Town; I think it was actually called North Richmond Grocery. Family place; the grandma sold homemade pies and on the weekends there was this big, big guy who smoked beef ribs… Those were some excellent bones…..

Good idea to run garden equipment, you won’t use until next season, until gas is gone to avoid having to rebuild or replacing carburetor.

Where do you find a trustworthy, licensed and bonded handyman in this area? Needed for indoor and outdoor upkeep around the house. Thanks in advance.

I haven’t used these guys yet, so I cannot comment on their service.

Bill,
Yelp can be “handy”. Check them out also.

You can check the Contactors State License Board for licensed contractors. You can check how long they’ve been licensed, and if there have been any complaints.
Their website is http://www.cslb.gov. You can also check with the BBB.

Must of not gotten the memo that says we don’t need to register or insure our cars anymore. Counted 7 cars with expired tags while driving around Concord today. 🤷‍♀️

“Can we post pictures of found animals? If so how do we do that?”

Regarding your question last week (just saw it, I’m a little behind) you might be able to post a link to a page that holds the photo. I know Google Drive, Google Docs and Google Photos (if I’m not mistaken) allow you to “Share” the item with others by posting a link to it. It never actually leaves your files, but the link created to it allows others to see it by visiting your file at the link.

Other services may function the same way such as Imgur, icloud photos, or other places where you store your photos. Look for an option to “Share” the image to create the link to it which you can then post.

Businesses use this feature a lot to share documents which never leave their files. Instead, they provide a link to “Share” the document and the visitor to the link can read it, or print it, or whatever they wish to do with it without having to email large documents.

The only problem would arise if you had to name who you wanted to “Share” it with. Then, it might not give you a link, but ask permissions in the form of email addresses to “Share” it with.

The ability to share a photo would be such a valuable way to be able to post the photo of a found animal and possibly reunite them. If I figure it out, I’ll post more info about how to do it. Or ,maybe someone else knows?

saw a news story that heads up sports owner retiring and closing up shop. A neat place… wishing him well…

Today Disney had the worst stock hit in 21 years. Pipchick,,or whatever his name is has to go. This company has become confused regarding simple truths. They forgot they answer to shareholders, not the whims of senior management. Therefore senior management has to go in order to stop the bleeding. Their legal obligation is to maximize shareholder value, not to maximize goofy politics.
As for Disneyland, management is also confused. The happiest place on earth, and the gayest place on earth are not the same thing. Welcome everyone, treat all guest with respect, and leave sexuality out of it. Oh, and traditional salutations are not an insult.
