The “Water Cooler” is a feature on Claycord.com where we ask you a question or provide a topic, and you talk about it.
The “Water Cooler” will be up Monday-Friday at noon.
Today’s question:
QUESTION: In your opinion, do you think these signs work to keep people driving the speed limit, or do you think there are better ways to control the speed on a busy street?
Talk about it.
I like them to calibrate my speedometer
I think they’re very effective. The sign reminds the driver he/she needs to slow down and lets the drivers behind know that the vehicle is speeding, and it’s someone to watch out for.
For the most part, I think it helps let folks know they were going too fast and didn’t realize it.
As far as control, no, because some folks just want to do their own thing …get there fast!
I think they’re effective. Unlike a regular sign, they “know” you’re speeding, which just feels different, lol. I’ve seen them in other states with flashing red and blue lights that light up if you’re speeding. I think those work even better, especially if you aren’t used to seeing them.
I’ve seen traffic on Ygnacio Valley Rd slow down when they see the sign, but only for a few seconds, then they speed up again. It’s not much different than seeing a cop, traffic will slow down, but as soon as the cop is out of sight, traffic speeds up again.
What’s the highest speed will those signs register? Will they register a 3 digit speed?…asking for a friend.
Challenge accepted?
When there was one on Market Street I had a neighbor who would see how fast he could go.
As is most of the lights are timed at 32mph.
And the little cars or SUV conductors don’t seem to realize tailgating is dangerous at any speed.
Trucks are designed to carry extra weight and payload. So don’t expect them to simply fly around, like the lousy drivers that employ their regular unsafe handling habits.
What are better ways to control speeds on a busy street? Driver Educatiion classes, mandatory for everyone. A working local knowledge of the local area. Learning how to be much more courteous with others, including yielding, and sharing roadways with cyclists. Crosswalks where pedestrians frequent i.e. intersection approach which is extremely important. Read the Dmv handbook from cover to cover.
They are a great reminder and advisor for the responsible driver.
For those who have decided not to be responsible, well, no sign will matter.
Effective but obtrusive…. please come up with a better design
They have led me to ensure I was not speeding, and to slow down if I were.
