No whammy! No whammy! No whammy! STOP!!
In 1984, a contestant on the popular game show called “Press Your Luck” didn’t land on a whammy, instead, he won a trip to Concord.
Yes, Concord! As in Concord, California.
There’s no word on if the winner actually claimed his prize, but it was a three-night stay at the Sheraton-Concord (near Buchanan Field), and it was described as having “all-weather resort activities”, which was basically true in 1984.
The trips they win on game shows are usually round trip from Burbank, or L.A. So, if the contestant is from the Midwest, or the East Coast, they will have to pay for their round trip to and from Burbank or L.A. Add taxes, and it usually isn’t worth it.
I saw a game show where the contestant won a round trip to San Francisco, the contestant was from San Mateo. I’ll bet they didn’t go.
Now they could pitch is as a rustic outdoors experience and let them go live with the voluntarily homeless encampments.
hahahahah
I’m trying to figure out what they used for the icon in the picture. Maybe it’s the Sheraton and its parking lot? The airport? The area in front of JC Penney? DMV? Any guesses out there? I know Concord was considered the county seat back then, is that still a thing?
The Mall?
Do a search on, “Press Your Luck,” and Michael Larson, which talks about the scandal where he was counting squares. I believe it’s posted on youtube, it’s a great documentary. Perhaps he could time it out and win a trip to Concord.
