The “Water Cooler” will be up Monday-Friday at noon.

Today’s question:

In an effort to have everyone drive electric vehicles in the very near future, California recently banned the sale of new gas-powered vehicles by 2035.

Today, PG&E and the state asked everyone not to charge their electric vehicles due to the flex alert issued by the California Independent System Operator.

QUESTION: Do you think the State’s power problem will be fixed by 2035 when they want everyone to start driving electric vehicles?

Talk about it….

The electric infrastructure problem needs to be fixed – requiring an aggressive schedule for EV sales is probably the best way to make sure it gets done.

Considering how much “progress” has been made on the power grid in the last 10-15 years, there’s not a chance that it will be ready to support widespread electrical vehicle usage by 2035 without dumping a TON of money into it. And we all know where that ton of money would have to come from. Luckily, I’ll be out of California long before then.

I have lived through a remarkable time in human history. Space exploration, TV, arthroscopic surgery, personal computers and cell phones to name a few. Unfortunately the change over from petroleum based energy to renewable energy is, I feel, going to be very difficult. It will happen, but it won’t be smooth. At this rate, I don’t think the grid will be ready.
I have started doing my part by putting solar, with a battery back up, on my house. I’ve told my family to come over if the power goes out this weekend. The A/C is set to 72.

Nope. It’s another liberal pipe dream that will end up being a mess.

This is just for chargers.
“How will we charge them all? US needs to spend $35 BILLION to meet demand for 1.2 million public ports by 2030 (And that’s not counting the 28M needed in homes!)”

For the whole State of California …. Just my thinking is that they will not be able to accommodate all EV vehicles by 2035.
But just because by 2035 there will not be anymore “new” gas cars sold, the gas ones (used cars) that are here, can still be able to be used …. unless all gas stations get closed down. If that happens … dictatorship rules and more freedom lost.

Think outside the box.

If gas stations shut down, will intermodal transportation still exist?
Most likely, yes. Truckers still need to deliver goods, and they won’t be hauling with an electric battery. There’s not enough storage capacity for towing large loads.

How can you avoid being nudged and shoved into buying an electric car?

Hint: Think DIESEL.

Very good Point!

No way will that happen that soon, if at all. I will put that under Silly Question.

Yes it would be if we could get rid f the democrats ruining this state

Agreed!
All the Democrat politicians – because they’re so left-wing indoctrinated – are against building any new power plants, and any new dams (for water storage & electric). The solar and wind power they support does not make enough electricity and does not work at night.
Even the Germans, who are very smart and who are ‘green leaders:, now acknowledged that they need to get some of their power plants back, including nuclear. But the liberal Democrats and greenies in this country are so indoctrinated into their narrow belief inflexible to allow that. So I predict the things are going to get really bad here!

Nope

Even shorter. No!

hmmm, let’s see. Bullet train (transportation method from the 1830s, with concept-high speed rail- from the 1960s) approved in 2008, estimated to cost we taxpayers $43 billion. Where are we in 2022? Nearly at a cost of $105 billion, with minimal infrastructure built up in Fresno, and estimates to be completed near 2030 (although I think that refers to Fresno to San Jose).

The I5 widening project in SoCal, went from 3 years to over 8 and a half (and not sure it is even done) and billions over budget.

Water storage has been an issue since I have moved here some 20 years ago. That situation has not improved.

How much space is going to be needed for charging stations? What will happen in Claycord, if 65% need to charge their vehicle from there homes, how many blocks will be using electricity. What will that load look like on a nice August evening when it is 90 degrees, and that 50 unit apartment complex needs to air condition their homes, and charge their cars, while working their electric ovens (because no more natural gas use) to cook their food (since can’t burn wood products to cook). These guys running their fiefdom will never solve the electricity problem. In fact, I would wager the power problem will be phenomenally worse by 2035, phenomenally worse..

You are spot on.

Power and water = Never.

Yes, because China will default on the US debt

No, it will not be fixed, and will never be fixed in my lifetime. If and when, the time comes that selling new gasoline powered vehicles is illegal, what will people do with their old car? They can’t sell it, and they certainly wouldn’t be able to trade it in, because it will be worthless. California will be in a bigger mess than it is now, with millions of cars, trucks, semi’s, and RV’s piling up. They will be parked all over the streets, leaving no place to park your brand new shiny EV.
Think about how many people will be out of work. Gas stations will close down, quick oil changers, and oil refinery employees will be getting their last paycheck. Auto repair shops, and mechanics will be a thing of the past, unless they can afford to go to school to learn how to repair an EV, which will extremely expensive to repair. Auto parts stores will be going out of business, because most people will not be able to do their own repairs on an EV.
Let’s hope that the next governor has more sense than the dictator we have now.

Unless the USA starts going full nuclear power plants for power it will never be fixed.
The powers in control now over all this green energy bull**** are about as stupid as they come.

Take a look at what’s happened to Germany with all the green energy idiots taking over.

Exactly. Nuclear is the only way to get out of this mess without somehow improving battery technology exponentially.

Here’s a fun fact. Ask any electrical engineer how many electric cars can be charging at one time for each neighborhood transformer. On level 1 charging it’s 6 and on level 2 charging its 3 before the transformers blow. So my answer is no way will the problem be fixed by 2035. The solution I’m afraid is to fix Sacramento and the Clown troop that are making these laws.

Very good question.
The answer best given by our electric provider.
Only PG&E is capable of providing electricity for the middle class.
Government seems to screw up other things,DMV,Post office and other agency.

NO!

Only the Democrats could think that we can switch to green energy (which if you exclude nuclear is not adequate), mandate that everything be run on electricity (cars, new home builds, etc…), bring in tens of thousands of new residents, and not have big problems.

Until the Dems stop believing in fantasy and fairy dust, we will be in big trouble in this state.

You’re right but we are already in big trouble in this state. And the democrats and their control over California is not going anywhere….Our only recourse is to move out of the state.

That is of course unless you are willing to keep putting up with all of their shenanigans, keep paying higher and higher taxes to support their latest agenda items, keep accepting their lies, etc. Newsome has proven himself a liar a hundred times over but the majority still vote for him…..it is not going to change and if it isn’t Newsome himself it’ll just be someone else that is cut from the same cloth.

Depressing I know….

Very good question.
The answer best given by our electric provider.
Only PG&E is capable of providing electricity for the middle class.
Government seems to screw up other things,DMV,Post office imagine if you needed help with your electric service. You think your bill is high know.

Will pigs fly? You’ve got to be incredibly naïve and/or stupid to think that California will have enough power by 2035 to meet the needs. Remember, you’re dealing will inept politicians.

The problem of pig flight has solved. It involves a large Trebuchet. Landings are a bit messy

Will be interesting to see how people will charge their (totally unaffordable) EV’s when the power grid continually goes off. What about the dead batteries? Will they end up in landfills? Maybe we should all buy a horse and buggy! But then, who will be responsible for horse poop cleanup? Will we be accused of polluting the planet? Imagine having to goose step around all that muck! I would love seeing governor greaseball out there with a large broom sweeping the streets. That’s the least he could do to follow up on his dumb idea to ban all gas powered vehicles.

I think it’s possible, probably about 10 to the minus 6 chance.

We need more engineers and scientists elected and fewer lawyers. You need to look no farther than the current Energy Secretary, Jennifer Granholm, to understand the problem.

The way things are going it may not make any difference at all. In fact you may be still be able to drive a gas powered car in 2035 or even 2040. I mean if the population of California is going to be 1/4 of what it is now then the change would be unnecessary. 😉

I was camping last weekend in a state park and asked the park supervisor when we’re they going to start on the infrastructure for Electric Vehicles such as RV’s boats, jet ski’s, etc. . He basically said the surrounding towns around the parks park would have to have that infrastructure.

Ah, living in Commiefornia…you really can’t make this stuff up! We are quickly being run into the ground here by the corrupt elite that have a stranglehold over our state. It’s so sad.

Question: What did Communists use to see at night before candlelight?

Answer: Electricity

Once upon a time ….in California, a Governor wanted to keep his voting block happy.

When you have to say or do something to keep the votes, you will say and do ANYTHING. Newsom’s career (and a vast majority of the Democrats) would be over if he stated the truth, there is no way to support all electric cars, buses and train transportation. The projects this State has entered into have always taken longer than planned, cost more than planned and rarely have turned out the way they are supposed to on completion, if ever completed. It’s all a political fairytale.

Gavin has big dreams that give us all nightmares!

Yes. If the State can just find some dilithium crystals, and funnel their energy into a flux-capacitor we would have millions of jigawatts.

@Martinezmike ~
There You Go! …. Sounds perfect 🙂

Nope ….. haven’t been able to solve the water issues in 100 yrs what makes anyone (of this current leadership anyway) think they can get it done by 2035? Confidence level = 0

Maybe by 3025…

1) people will go next state to buy gas vehicles. Just like they did to purchase Teslas when Texas wouldn’t sell them. Dumb idea…lower state tax when I purchase as well.
2) The gov has mandated replacing gas stoves with electric stoves for new construction. More draw on the system country wide. Are you going to tell people not to cook on hot days. That’s funny as hell.
3) CA promoted solar panels – many people adopted it and now you created a situation where less people are paying into the infrastructure maintenance fund. How do you fix that – you’re proposing we pay a solar panel adoption penalty basically.

What a cluster fk. I’m glad I’ll be dead when the poop hits the fan.

No chance in hell, we pay the most for electricity is the continental US, and still have rolling blackouts like a third world country. Only chance is if we turn back to nuclear power.

With Gavin in charge, California is doomed. He never looks at long term effects when he makes his decisions. He should start with banning Gas leaf blowers right this minute. Getting rid of big gas guzzling SUV’s would also help. Lets get back to basic cars, same size so smaller vehicles have a chance in an accident with huge vehicles… Imagine this fool as President…could be even worse than Bumbling Biden!

@Aunt Barbara…Those damn gas leaf blowers blowing carbon everywhere!

Aunt Barbara, Your wish is about to come true. Newsom signed a bill that will outlaw the sale of small gasoline powered single engine off-road equipment, such as chainsaws, lawnmowers, and leaf blowers. However, you will have to wait a couple of years, the law goes into effect in 2024. That doesn’t mean that leaf blowers already in use will be banned, we’ll have to wait until they get old and beyond repair and stop working.

“The best minds are not in government. If any were,
business would hire them away.”
— Ronald Reagan

Exactly. Nuclear is the only way to get out of this mess without somehow improving battery technology exponentially.

No chance. People in California want electricity but punish those who generate and transport it.

On the current trajectory, everyone will have a diesel generator hooked up to their house – quality of life and air quality will go down in neighborhoods as the generator hum and emissions become omnipresent. “Let’s fight climate change by forcing consumers to have their own house-sized fossil fuel power station! Brilliant!!”

No.
