Concord, Walnut Creek Open Space Areas Closed Until Tuesday Due To Extreme Heat

At the urging of the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District amid a days-long heat wave, both the City of Concord and the City of Walnut Creek have closed their open space areas, including Lime Ridge Open Space, the open space within Newhall Community Park, Shell Ridge and Acalanes Ridge from Thursday through Tuesday.

Contra Costa County is under an excessive heat warning as temperatures are expected to exceed 100 degrees over the Labor Day weekend and beyond, creating dangerous health conditions and increased fire danger.

The Concord Senior Center will be a designated cooling center for people when temperatures exceed 100 degrees. It will be open from 9 p.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday (hours could be extended, if needed) and noon to 7 p.m. Saturday through Monday. The Senior Center is at 2727 Parkside Circle.

The fire district wants to remind people most fires are caused by human carelessness and asks that people report any fire to 911 (don’t assume someone else has already called).

September and the tail end of August have always seemed to be the hottest months of the year in these parts, but they are relying on everybody having a short memory, so they can try to convince us that we’re all doomed unless we go green.

This is owned by we the people. Nobody has the right to tell you not to go there without passing a law. Who is speaking for the City of Concord? City council doesn’t make laws and most definitely does not dictate. So WHO made the call? THE NAME OF THE PERSON WHO IS A WANNABE DICTATOR THAT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS OVERREACH.

102 degrees and all the snowflakes melt. What a joke. We regularly hit 100+ every year randomly between July and September for my whole life. Again, they are in your face lying. Just like COVID HOAX.

Now you just take shutting down whenever they say?? BBQ at Lime Ridge Saturday, bring your American flags

Sam, might I suggest relaxing and understand the extreme fire danger we will be in the next several.a days. Why risk the chance of fire? The need for a limited access rescue at 107 degrees? Is your personal political feelings really that important that you feel the need to scream at everybody?

the fake just me…………. why ?
would anyone need rescue because its 107 degrees?
just stay home so you dont waste resouces everytime you go out as you probably do.
if youre in that bad a shape just walk laps in the shade inside your moms garage where you live.
Don’t forget to wear your mask when walking indoors alone
There must still be a way that you could be victimized by a non caring stranger while doing that too,ya know?
All is not lost.

Oh brother….

It’s called law and order.

Growing up in eastern Washington, August was always the hot month of the year. Tell me about working in wheat harvest! Then like clock work in early September it would start to cool down and the leaves turn brown.

Perhaps it’s not about hoping we’d forget but instead they’ve forgotten and don’t realize this is nothing new. 🤣

Thank you to our all-knowing, benevolent government for keeping me safe this weekend. What would I do without their guidance during this crisis?!?!

Well we just were walking thru one of them. Closed my butt, you wanna go walk on the trails there is no one to stop you.

Do they have someone guarding the park?If you go in there will you be arrested? Is this the same weather and parks that have been there for the last 50 years/Why this year are they encouraging people to be little snowflakes that might melt?Stay home and run thee AC???
NO dont do that DONT DO ANYTHING!!!!
WE will tell you what to do.
Attention all planets of the solar federation…We have assumed control….we have assumed control……we have assumed control…

@James….We were warned 60 years ago every Monday night, nobody listened I guess…..

The weather in September is called “Indian summer” – it has been this way for decades! September is always hotter than June and July.

It’s called thermal lag. June should be the hottest month due to it having the longest days, but it takes a while to heat up the atmosphere. Thermal lag results in typically having hotter weather at this time of the year, in spite of having less daylight than in June.

The sign says “Open Space”. Sounds open to me.

Old Goat and Just Me, I agree with you both. With all the fires we have had isen’t it better to be safe than sorry. I saw someone holding a lit cigaret out of a car window the other day, very irresponsible. It won’t take much for a fire to get started.

All newer vehicles in the last 15 years or so don’t have ashtrays (none of ours did), of course they have to hang cigs out the window and toss em out as well..

You two boot lickers really have a problem with people who know and stand up for their rights and don’t just accept tyranny. As hanne once said “screw your freedoms”. Your mask protects me, and my mask protects you. Following “dear leaders” like fauci right? 🤣🤣 You are not good Americans for cowering to fake authorities.

Bottom line is climate science is political science and mini tyrants attempt to take our rights without LAWS. This is the great reset and you are the useful idiots. LAW AND ORDER, PUBLIC SPACES, CHECKS AND BALANCES. The constitution is the only thing saving spoiled Americans from straight up tyranny. That makes me an extreme MAGA extremist. Lol YES. You fools are brainwashed and it’s sad.

If you want to go for a hike over the weekend, just go to one of the East Bay Regional Parks. Oh, wait. Those are going to be closed, too.

Just another small step toward total domination by authority (government). From the breakfast you eat to the ground they’ll bury you in, government has a plan.

We just took another walk in open space Lime Ridge, what is supposed to be closed cause it sure didn’t look closed with the 30 or so other people on it.
It was nice and cool…
Closed my butt!

This basically says, the public is stupid and we have to save them from themselves.

This was pelosi’s opinion on the election.

This heat wave is unusual because of the sheer number of years we’ve been without adequate rain.

I was noticing that the squirrels look like they’re starving because there was so little backyard fruit available to them this year. The fur on some of their tails has just about all fallen out from malnutrition.

Gittyup, Regarding missing tail fur.
I see the same condition on the raccoons out here often, it is mange (caused by mites).

@Gittyup…..Squirrels and raccoons shed in the summer months like cats and dogs, and get mange too.

Dr. Jellyfinger, I’ve seen that, too, in years past. The Peacock that strutted our neighborhood had a really serious case of mange before he died. It was accompanied by a noticeable case of dandruff, as well.

But, this looks different to me. It almost looks like the squirrels have pulled out the fur from just their tails. Generally, with mange, the entire coat looks sort of moth eaten with patches of fur missing elsewhere.
The squirrel I saw recently had a good-looking coat. Just his tail was missing a large amount of fur. His tail was looking almost rat like.

I took out almost all the plum trees in my backyard last Fall, so there has been a lack of fruit, even the dried up stuff on the ground. They aren’t finding a lot to store for the Winter.

This is a good call. I had planned an early morning walk there for at least two of the days in the long weekend, but will adjust my plans and will find another location.

Concord Guy, That is a very responsible and mature response. Drive over to Benicia and walk in Benicia state park, it is usually a little cooler over there because it is close to the water. I lived in Benicia for 10 years, loved walking in Benicia State Park.

Exactly! I remember as a kid it would hit at least 102 a few times every summer back in the mid-90s. It’s like they want us to forget it gets hot here this time of year.

Make sure your pets have plenty of fresh, cold water available.during the heat.

…. living close to dry grass and weed hills I’m ok with this decision …. too many homeless & wackos walking around in the middle of the night in the open space and on the CCC trails
