The California Independent System Operator (ISO) has issued a statewide Flex Alert, a call for voluntary electricity conservation, for today, Aug. 31 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., due to high temperatures pushing up energy demand and tightening available power supplies.
With excessive heat in the forecast across much of the state and Western U.S., the grid operator is expecting high electricity demand, primarily from air conditioning use, and is calling for voluntary conservation steps to help balance supply and demand.
Additional Flex Alerts are also possible through the Labor Day weekend as record setting temperatures are forecast across much of the West.
In what’s likely to be the most extensive heat wave so far in the West this year, temperatures in Northern California are expected to be 10-20 degrees warmer than normal through Tuesday, Sept. 6. In Southern California, temperatures are expected to be 10-18 degrees warmer than normal. Death Valley is currently forecast to peak at 126 degrees on Saturday, which would tie the highest temperature ever recorded on Earth in the month of September.
Today’s Flex Alert is scheduled between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., when the grid is most stressed from higher demand and less solar energy.
During that time, consumers are urged to conserve power by setting thermostats to 78 degrees or higher, if health permits, avoiding use of major applicances and turning off unnecessary lights.
They should also avoid charging electric vehicles while the Flex Alert is in effect.
To minimize discomfort and help with grid stability, consumers are also encouraged to pre-cool their homes and use major appliances and charge electric vehicles and electronic devices before 4 p.m., when conservation begins to become most critical.
Reducing energy use during a Flex Alert can help stabilize the power grid during tight supply conditions and prevent further emergency measures, including rotating power outages.

Flex Alert Conservation Actions
From 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.:
-
- Set thermostat to 78 degrees or higher, if health permits
- Avoid using major appliances and charging electric vehicles
- Turn off all unnecessary lights
A Flex Alert is issued by the ISO when the electricity grid is under stress because of generation or transmission outages, or from persistent hot temperatures.
This is a state that wants to do away with gas vehicles all together in 10 years and less than a week after that announcement they are telling you not to charge your electric vehicle or there will be blackouts. You cannot make up this kind of idiocy. Newsome and the rest of his leftists in this State are a disgrace.
Exactly!
…. And those people that own electric cars now, won’t be able to get a full charge in them possibly hindering their ability to get to work tomorrow. In the same people, are going to be charged a tax on every mile they drive to make up for the gas tax they’re not paying. So how sweet is owning electric car going to be?
BUT, But, but CA is ‘green’ we have wind n solar ! ! !
‘California goes haywire! Electric car owners are told NOT to charge their vehicles because of heatwave – just days after announcing 2035 ban on gas cars’
dailymail https://tinyurl.com/37kcssz4
solar production begins tapering off after 1 pm, by 6 pm is near zero and on hot days winds decrease significantly meaning power by wind generation is low.
Growing up in this area there weren’t power failures on hot days. Not until DEMs began their knee jerk green fantasy did problems start.
Add empty soda bottles to your freezer along with drinking water in case we have another DEM power failure.
What is the difference between the Biden administration and the Newsom administration? Not much. We have no plan for more power or water. We depend on the Gods. In a God forsaken state.
Oh I forgot the plan for power is roof top solar panels. Thats the ticket.
A few differences, one has oily looking, slick backed hair, the other may have plugs. One lies mostly incoherently, the other lies coherently. One fantasized he took on a character named “Corn Pop,” not sure if the other has such delusions. Finally, one likes to sniff the hair of younger children, the other seems to like his staff’s better half. Other than that and years of contempt for the average American citizen, not much else….
Jeff (the other one) Good job.
Wasn’t it this states leadership that was bashing Texas when we were having issues with our grid?
OMG
Can you believe these idiots?
Don’t charge your EV . Don’t be in a rush to sell your car.
We don’t have enough electricity to power your EV and rolling back outs are next. Oh yea no IPads or IPhones they take electricity. Better buy a generator? Solar panels don’t work in the dark and windmills don’t work with out wind.
It looks like reality is a tough pill to Swallow.
Cannot buy a generator as of next year as they run on gas.
Well it says 77 degrees outside here and and the upper left on this site 86 degrees for Concord. Not exactly a heatwave.
@Captain No not exactly a heatwave. But it is a good excuse for the frequent brown-outs
@yoyohop, not in block 50. 😁
Duh! 🤪 The hottest part of the day doesn’t come until late afternoon into the early evening. It’s going to reach 100° today in Concord.
The real heatwave will be Saturday through Tuesday. ☀️☀️
Sounds like a good time to ride my motorcycle over to Bodega Bay where it’s only going to be in the 70s. 🏍
We have micro climates here which means the temps aren’t exactly the same throughout this area of the East Bay. Even in this block it can be hot but through the valley behind cool due to a breeze that makes it there. And sometime the opposite occurs. In the afternoon the sun goes down early behind a hill and temps start dropping. Indoors last night, not even using AC, the temp only reached 79 degrees.
There’s been so much money wasted on useless garbage when there’s been a huge need to upgrade the electrical grid to handle the ever increasing load. But no, the leftist push for all things green has not been thought out for the long haul and we are suffering that now and it will get so much worse unless it is replaced with common sense and truth.
+1

No thanks.

Cal ISO can take the flex and alert it.
Socialism is not very good at economics since the consequences of decisions are unknown to the politicians playing economic deciders. Russia is a nice example with 5 to 8 million deaths in the early 1930s famine caused by their farm collectivization program. In California our politicians are probably even less skilled. Oh, and by the way, if the forced EV program is 100 percent successful it will only save two tenths of one percent each year of what China is causing for carbon dioxide pollution each year. You don’t see that in the speeches do you.
I like how you use “less skilled” as a synonym for “ignorant”. 👍🏻
IMO, I believe that people should continue to use electricity in the same manner that they do on non “flex alert” days. I believe that the CA politicians will only become reasonable with this electricity/ gas issue once CA has hit rock bottom and the majority of Californians are screaming for an updated power grid, gas autos, etc. I refuse to be uncomfortable in my own home because of a hot day. There is absolutely no common sense anymore in CA. If we didn’t have jobs and family in CA, I think we would leave.
This is the cost to charge you car in Europe. Shortly the price will go up. Note the miles you get for $70.
So, using the Audi e-Tron battery as an example, “filling it up” with 80 kilowatt-hours of power will coat €63.20 ($70.10) to travel about 160 miles.
My AC is on at 71, no I will not comply with this statement to cut back.
Don’t charge your EVs hahaha I’ve heard it all now, I smell a monkey in the woodpile with all this green energy BS.
“A surge in EV charging at home could bring down parts of the state’s grid.”

If I were in charge of the state, I would mandate all residential homes be retrofitted with solar … and launch a robust public education campaign to boost “air-drying” laundry … those two simple solutions would end the issue of energy problems and save the state about a gazzilion doll oars in energy waste.
.
I hope the elecric grid goes down.
.
Oakland, SF, and LA will be looted!
.
Protect yourselves, family, and property in accordance with your civil rights and US Constitution.

I’m proud of my carbon footprint, and it turns out I can also be proud of my electric footprint because they are one in the same.
Filter out the politics, and things aren’t so bad from an energy perspective.
From a political perspective it’s a train wreck. Wait till they figure out the lgbtq community also drive gasoline powered cars. Oh the horror……..
Politics is indeed the reason for soaring energy costs. It’s a direct result of incompetence at the highest levels of leadership.
We may have a better chance for the environment if we could eliminate the polluting bs and hot air from Sacramento and Washington D.C. . Just sayin’…
There is a long tradition of “Malthusian thinking” coming from elite universities like Oxford. Malthusians believe that there are limits imposed by nature on populations and resource usage and these are absolute and likely cannot be ( and now with Gaia, should not be) overcome with technology and adaptation. The UN and WEF are filled with these types and coincidentally they are usually well insulated people that have everything they need. LoL The politicians now are simply the mouthpieces for these people. They implement the policy handed to them from WEF, UN , think tanks etc. There is very little input taken from the actual people. The German foreign minister said yesterday that they will support Ukraine “no matter what the people think”.
