The Contra Costa Mosquito and Vector Control District sprayed the Martinez waterfront with an insecticide early Thursday morning to address a high number of mosquitoes in the area.
The department used truck-mounted, low-volume sprayers to control adult mosquitoes using insecticide Zenivex E4 RTU. The treatment is the only way that the adult mosquito population can be controlled, vector control district officials said.
The insecticide, applied at the rate of 1.5 ounces per acres, was sprayed from the Carquinez Strait to Waterfront Road. The treated area was also bordered on the east by Pacheco Slough and on the west by Embarcadero Street.
Just happy they’re not spraying it with MPX !
.
What about the beneficial insects like honey bees?
.
The chemical will enter the ecosystem and may do irreparable harm to the natural food chain.
.
Was the public provided adequate notice in advance of the spraying? If there was no notice, shouldn’t one have been conducted since the waterfront is a public space?
