UPDATE: Long- Smoldering Marsh Fire In Pittsburg Flares Up Again

The long-smoldering Marsh Fire, on the north side of highway 4 in Pittsburg near Bay Point, has flared up again and additional resources have been called in to help extinguish the blaze.

Firefighters were going to let the fire burn itself out, because they said it was in an uninhabited and inaccessible area, but those plans have changed.

Smoke is visible from all over Contra Costa County.

The cause of the blaze has not been determined.

UPDATE: Several palm trees are burning, but firefighters are getting a good handle on the fire.

Quit di%king around and put it out! We’re choking to death over here!

It’s in a marsh. You can’t just drive a fire engine out there and put it out

You can’t drive a fire engine out there to put it out, they would sink into the mud and water well before they reached the fire.

Those that live off highway 4 must suffer lol

Good luck with that fire. Nearly impossible to “put out” if it’s into the peat it will smolder for a very long time.

You’re right, I believe years ago they just let it burn for a long time. I always remember people saying the smoke was from the peat burning.

I know they are trying. The funny looking helicopter has been going over my house every few minutes for a while now.

…can we conscript the homeless who probably started it to help put it out? Even pay them something….

Yeah Randy…. then we can look forward to having 5X as many fires!
Great idea.

Well, they are homeless because they refuse to do anything. So, of course, they would not help.

Yes, out in the boggy marshland where I know all kinds of homeless people hang out. MUST have been them who started it.

Some big wig politician probably got their panties in a knot and forced resources to put out the fire.

It’ll burn itself out, but no, let’s send a Battalion of fire fighters to a swamp.

It’s a waste of the peoples money and public resources.

Way to go, big wig politicians, whoever you may be.

Regardless of who started it. This fire has been burning for weeks. Access issues or not the decision to let it burn was negligent. Particularly based on the known wind characteristics of the area. An unattended fire simply burning so closely to a populated area would never be acceptable in places like Walnut Creek or San Ramon.

Ummm
Those places don’t have swamp land either. I wonder if the fire being in swamp land has something to do with it …. Just thinking how they would get land based fire apparatus into the swamps. Maybe … I got it! Maybe you as a taxpayer would pay for the fire department to have swamp boats with fire pumps and hose beds so they could Pilot that out there … yeah! I am sure you would not mind supporting your local fire department in that manner, right?

Negligent. Maybe you should look into what fires are allowed to burn and which are not. You do know that they would let a house burn down if it met certain criteria and only provide protection to adjoining structures … would you consider that negligent as well? Well you probably would …

.
How about summoning one or more fireboats to provide continuous streams of water to douse the smoldering biomass?
.

It’s too far inside the shallow water and tules for any boat to hit with water

Saw bumper sticker years ago,
SAVE water fight fires with delta smelt
