Contra Costa County Fire Protection District officials said Sunday they extinguished at least four fires started Saturday night by fireworks, which are illegal in Contra Costa.
According to district fire marshal Chris Bachman, one occurred near the parking lot of Highlands Elementary school in Pittsburg. The other three occurred in Antioch, the largest of which grew to two acres. No injuries were reported.
Seven other fires were reported Saturday night in Contra Costa that could’ve been started by fireworks, Bachman said.
“Resulting fires put property and lives in danger and strain emergency resources,” the district tweeted Sunday. “Con Fire urges residents to celebrate responsibly and safely – fireworks free.”
I doth detect incendiary in your mothers pantaloons.
How often is law enforcement showing up when concerned citizens call to report fireworks?
Never. If the crime isn’t in progress, it’s not even worth thinking about it.
How long are we going to put up with the fire risk to property and safety to lives and the huge cost?
Like the scale of justice, which is more important to the American citizen, preventing a fire started by fireworks or celebrating Independence Day? Most choose celebrating. It’s up to the fire crews to put the fires out.
There are plenty of legal, protected fireworks shows which we can enjoy and celebrate. It’s the numbskulls firing off illegal fireworks with which we should be concerned, given the incredibly high fire dangers in our area. Leaving it all on the shoulders of fire fighters to extinguish the dangers of irresponsible celebrators with no regard for others’ property is narrow minded and arrogant.
You don’t have to shoot off illegal fireworks to celebrate Independence Day. There are other and safer ways to celebrate. We are in a drought everything is very dry it does not take much to start a fire. Enjoy the fireworks that the different cities put on and be safe. Your comment is ignorant and careless. How would you like it if your house was on fire and the fire department was too busy putting out fires started by illegal fireworks, they couldn’t save your house?
So Hanne … are you advocating the good old baking soda and vinegar bombs in the 2 liter plastic bottles? No flames or sparks involved, plenty loud…. fun for the whole family.
The worst part is these people don’t know they’re morons. Just can’t figure out the danger.
I have not heard one firecracker so far this weekend. Maybe people are learning. Usually at least a dozen by this time.
Lucky you. They were going until at least 3AM by my house last night.
You/re lucky, Ricardoh. We were awakened at 3am by the sounds of M-80s going off. At least a dozen explosions. The dog loved it. :/
Please keep the sparklers away from Joe! He’s way too triggered about Roe v. Wade supreme court decision.
That’s the great thing about all this equity stuff. All that automatic weapon fire rarely starts fires. Sure, now and then an innocent bystander gets plugged, but hey, that’s a small price to pay for equity.
