PG&E Warns Of Possible Outages, Urges Preparation For Friday Heat In Northern California

It’s hot today, but it’s going to be even hotter tomorrow, according to PG&E.

PG&E spokesperson Tamar Sarkissian said in an email that this could be an “all-hands on deck event,” and said crews will be out and ready to respond to heat-related outages.

Sarkissian said the statewide utility manager, California Independent System Operator, could make the determination to issue a “flex alert,” which is a notice to encourage customers to voluntarily reduce power consumption.

According to CAISO, most flex alerts occur in the evening hours when solar energy is less available and many residents are returning home and use more electricity.

Sarkissian said transformer failure is the main cause of outages during excessive heat. Transformers help distribute power from the grid to homes and businesses, and require time to cool down, especially at night, she said. When temperatures stay high overnight, the components in the transformers can become overheated and fail.

Transformers can fail more often in coastal areas with more moderate average temperatures, because many inland areas have equipment designed to handle hotter weather.

If the power does go out, PG&E officials recommend having a fully charged cellphone, as well as flashlights, radios, and batteries nearby. People should unplug all electronics besides one lamp to alert when the power is back on, and then turn appliances on one-by-one when the power is restored.

The utility also recommends that residents place extra ice inside their freezer and refrigerator and keep the doors closed; and that they make sure any generator is installed by a licensed professional.

PG&E crews receive regular heat safety tips, especially before working during a heat event, according to Sarkissian. Co-workers are trained in first aid and monitor each other for signs of heat exhaustion, cramps, or stroke. Crews are to stop working if they recognize these signs.

Temperatures in the East Bay and further inland could reach into the lower 100s on Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

.
Chime in if you reside in a Block 50 outage block.
.
Block 50 residences are largely exempt from rotating outages because they contain critical facilities like police, CHP, and fire stations.

Chime….

This made me check, and I’m happy to learn I’m in a Block 50!!!!

Block 50 here.

Yep, I’m in block 50 too.

I never understood why, but our corner of Cowell was in Block 50.

Block 50 here but I read awhile back that PG&E was in the process of isolating neighborhoods in block 50 so they could institute rolling blackouts without killing power to critical infrastructure might not be exempt for much longer. Hopefully they doddle on this project.

For me it’s because there is a fire station nearby.

Whatever you do, don’t charge your electric cars.

… that’s what happens when you don’t plan for high summer heat… you need to keep conventional and nuclear power till there is sufficient green power to take over… but do you think Newsom pushed the PUC & PG&E to do this? nooooooooooooo they’re all in each others back pocket 🙁

And where are they going to get electricity to charge all the electric cars they want to make us buy.We can’t even run air conditioners without loosing power. And you moron voters are voting all the same controlling freaks back in office.Get a brain people.

Agree!!!!!

I’m not sure if you can charge an electric car with a gas generator. What a mess!

That’s what we call a Walnut Creek Redneck: A Tesla with a gas generator mounted on the hood.

It will get bad this summer when EV owners come home from work, plug in the car, and turn on the A/C. Thanks to Biden, Harris, and Newsom, thousands of illegals are being let loose into California, mostly in the LA area, but it won’t be long until they migrate north to the Bay Area and suck up our precious electricity.

NO problem, just fire up all those Peaker Plants built to supply extra electricity in high demand periods.

Oh that’s right DEMs and unelected green agenda bureaucrats did away with Peaker Plants without first building generation capacity to replace plants they had torn down.

Funny thing, ever notice when unelected bureaucrats and politicians get it WRONG there are no negative consequences for them ? ?

As you sit in the dark, SWEATING, wondering if that expensive food, because of DEM caused inflation, is going to spoil consider who you’ll vote for in NOvember.

I thought the elected idiots want everyone to be all electric. No thanks, I’ll keep my gas stove, water heater and furnace.

But how are we going to charge our electric cars?

I think the government has mandated that we switch our stoves, water heaters, and furnaces to electric within 10 years. That’s going to be very expensive Plus all that strain is going to blow out the energy grid which is incapable now. Welcome to the world of the green Nazis. The same will probably want to throw you in jail if you have a barbecue or mow your lawn or water your plants. It’s all about them in the control they want over everyone else’s lives.

Wow, the low 100’s ! Has this ever happened in June before?

117.0°F
The highest recorded temperature in Concord is 117.0°F (47.2°C), which was recorded in June. The lowest recorded temperature in Concord is 18.0°F (-7.8°C), which was recorded in December. The average amount of precipitation for the year in Concord is 13.2″ (335.3 mm).

I’m willing to adapt here. If I can’t charge my $100K Tesla, I sure can take my Lexus to the gas station to fill up on gas. The “great” gas prices are so affordable these days. Thank you CA.

Did you get the $70,000 Tesla solar roof plus powerwall option? Then you would not need to worry about PG&E’s reliability.

For $170,000 for the car plus solar you don’t need to worry about gas being $7 per gallon either.

But how are we going to charge our electric cars?

“If the power does go out, PG&E officials recommend having a fully charged cellphone, as well as flashlights, radios, and batteries nearby.”
Basic survival advice. But when the power goes out during extreme heat, me and my dog are firing up the AC in the car, I don’t care how much it costs. We’ll be burnin’ that 7 dollar a gallon fuel.

“my dog and I”…

These outages have big impact on communities of color and disadvantaged communities. It’s another social injustice at the hands of Newsom. But he doesn’t care as all of his rich donors will be sitting in a solar powered air conditioned space enjoying a cool glass of Chardonnay.

PlumpJack, Cade, or Odette Vineyards Chardonnay.

I suspect PG&E will threaten us with increased rates if we do not cut back on our usage…you know like our wonderful water company.

I thought all the liberals sold their Teslas so they could “show Elon.”

Yesterday a young lady spokesperson for PG&E said that in a heat wave the transformers don’t have a chance to cool down at night. What happens back East when it only cools down to 90 degrees at night? So when they engineered these transformers they did it for cost instead of being able to meet all possible conditions.

Spare the Air days, highest in the nation gas, mass-looting and rolling blackouts are all indicators that California in approaching Colony Collapse. This is the foreseeable consequence of long-term single party rule by the far left pretending to be the mainstream Democrats your grandma voted for.

Leaving California used to be the sign of failure or a job transfer. Now it indicates that an individual has weighed California and found it wanting. The handwriting is on the wall and you don’t need me to read it for you.

People – freeze water in water bottles – (just in case power goes out).
