Environmentalists Sue Over Refinery Conversion Plans For Martinez And Rodeo

Two environmental groups have sued Contra Costa County over what they say was its “rushed approval of two proposed biofuel refineries in the Bay Area using incomplete and misleading environmental reviews.”

Communities for a Better Environment and the Center for Biological Diversity released a statement Wednesday, saying they filed suit Tuesday, challenging “flawed environmental review processes for two giant oil refineries looking to convert from processing crude to producing biofuels from vegetable oil and animal fat feedstocks.”

The county board of supervisors on May 3 approved separate plans for Marathon Martinez refinery and Phillips 66 refinery in Rodeo to covert operations from oil refining to that of renewable diesel fuel, renewable fuel gas, and renewable components for blending with other transportation fuels.

Environmental and community groups appealed the county planning commission’s approval of each project, saying its environmental impact report was faulty. They also said the county isn’t mitigating significant environmental problems the projects could cause, as well as ones left over by decades of oil refining at the site.

Supervisors acknowledged their concerns, but said county staff thoroughly analyzed each plan and the it’s time for the county to get busy battling climate change.

The groups say the county’s fast-tracked review obscured, underestimated or ignored significant harms to community safety, air quality, public health, wildlife and the climate. They say communities near the refineries are classified “disadvantaged” by the state of California because of their high exposure to pollution from existing industries.

They say the proposals would lock in continued pollution for these residents for decades to come – much of it from the truck, ship and rail cars necessary to transport the fuel.

“After wreaking havoc on the health of California’s communities for over a century, big oil is trying to squeeze any last bit of profit they can from these massive, aging, otherwise defunct pieces of polluting fossil fuel infrastructure,” said Connie Cho, an attorney for Communities for a Better Environment. “Retrofitting petroleum refineries to produce first-generation food system-based biofuels without a net climate benefit is a corporate oil scam, not a just transition plan.”

The board unanimously approved both projects. County staff the plans were consistent with the areas’ zoning and county general plan and would improve air quality and reduce the presence of hazard materials in the area.

“We all need to get to electric; we need to get to it as soon as possible,” supervisor John Gioia said, during the hearing for the Rodeo project. “The reality is that’s not going to happen until later in the 2040s.

There will be a need for these types of liquid fuels that have lower carbon intensity.”

You can’t win with the environmental jerkoffs. “Ooh diesel bad, we want biofuel, ooh biofuel now bad, ride your bicycle!”

When are they going to complain about wind farms killing birds and leaking oil all over? When are they going to complain about used-up windfarm parts and old solar panels being dumped in landfills? When are they going to complain about people dumping useless masks all over the place? When are they going to complain about old electric cars being dumped?

@ WC,
Not until all the cash-cows are milked dry and all the profits are spent.

.
Oh WC!!
.
Those are inconvenient facts that environmentalists ignore because it doesn’t fit their narrative!

Maybe it’s just me, but we all want clean water and clean air. Environmental groups can provide some very good recommendations, however, I see so many projects stalled indefinitely over some very m inor issues ie: Two examples that come to mind are:A desalination plant in Los Angeles which has now been canceled. A dam in South San Jose which was fully funded years ago but never built. It would be nice if both parties could come together to get things accomplished instead of nasty accusations and lawsuits that only enrich the attorneys. Bit then again, look no further than how Washington behaves.

I’m going to sue the environmental group.

Claycordians, please give me some ideas for my frivolous lawsuit. Emotional stress?

Russ, make sure you mention that you live in a ‘disadvantaged’ community.

Hell, we all live in “disadvantaged” Corruptifornia…

…flawed EIR …. beavers in the canals weren’t polled or interviewed

@Russ
Regarding food, tell them you’re allergic to everything and can only eat spotted owls.

Environmental groups are bullies that are against everything. Boo friggin hoo…

“Supervisors acknowledged their concerns, but said county staff thoroughly analyzed each plan and the it’s time for the county to get busy battling climate change.”

I want to know which staff “thoroughly analyzed” the plans, and what their qualifications are to allow them to make an educated decision. I also what to know EXACTLY what documentation was reviewed at a professional level to allow them to make that recommendation.

Anything other than a detailed technical analysis by technical professionals without interference by politicians or political motives is just bull$hit.

The eco nuts are why there is a water shortage.

These “Environmental” groups are only set on destruction. The air will never be clean enough for them. The water will never be clean enough for them. They hate the poor/middle classes and by ruining the means of production they impoverish them.
This autumn Vote all the Democrats out. Remove them root and branch!!!
