PG&E Asks Celebrants To Secure Balloons With Weights During Graduation Season

California’s graduation season has begun, and it’s important that all celebrants understand the public safety risks associated with helium-filled metallic balloons, according to PG&E.

If your graduation celebration involves balloons, make sure they are secured with a weight. Unweighted balloons can float away and come into contact with overhead power lines, causing power outages and a public safety risk.

In the first four months of 2022, metallic balloons striking electric lines have caused nearly 152 power outages in PG&E’s service area alone, disrupting service to more than 56,000 customers. These power outages can interrupt electric service to critical facilities such as hospitals, schools, and traffic lights.

.
I’m surprised metallic balloons haven’t been banned by the California Democrats.

You know, “for your safety”.

I hadn’t thought of that……you’re probably right, they’ll be on the hit list next.

There is no reason that a balloon should be metal. Although plastic has a different set of problems.

The 5th. Dimension started all this in 1967 with their “Beautiful Ballon”.

The issue of Mylar ballon’s causing power outages is directly caused by District Attorney Diana Becton failing to enforce Penal Code 653.1. (a) (a) No person shall sell or distribute any balloon that is constructed of electrically conductive material, and filled with a gas lighter than air without: (1) Affixing an object of sufficient weight to the balloon or its appurtenance to counter the lift capability of the balloon.
