The “Water Cooler” is a feature on Claycord.com where we ask you a question or provide a topic, and you talk about it.
The “Water Cooler” will be up Monday-Friday at noon.
Today’s question:
QUESTION: Which one did you like more….elementary school, middle (intermediate) school or high school?
Talk about it.
I liked High school. Class of 79.
High school; more ways to get into trouble and a little wiser to argue for less punishment.
Actually, I liked college the best, but that isn’t one of the choices, so I will go with elementary school because I was a carefree little kid without a care in the world. Even the threat of the Soviets dropping an atom bomb on us didn’t scare me too much, but I did think the air raid drills were stupid. Growing up in San Francisco, I never heard of middle school, we called it junior high school, and it consisted of the 7th, 8th, and 9th grades.
Right and I still don’t understand why it had to be change to what they call it now. I liked grade school (elementary) mostly because after I finally learned to read the rest was easy.
Isn’t Pine Hollow that way now? when I was in school, Silverwood went up to 6th grade…….Pine Hollow was 7th & 8th grade…….and CVHS was 9th thru 12……….ON THE COUNT OF 3 I SAY EAGLE U SAY PRIDE!!!! WOOT WOOT
Definitely elementary school
Middle school is where the vapes came into life… ewww. Regret it still.
Middle School best. Out of elementary school into Middle school I was being recognized by excellent teachers for my instrumental music ability and by age 13 was performing with the College Symphony as a student during the summer. Was chosen along with another student as student of the year/ then one male one female in those days. Loved track and was fast. HS was not great, but ok, I was serious as a student and with my music but the normal HS politics took hold and I had few close friends, didn’t party. Sadly my prom date was tragically killed on a motorcycle accident. Not great memories of HS.
…elementary for sure …later than that is when family health issues arose 🙁
Elementary school. Loved all my teacher’ s at El Monte and made friends for life.
High School, class of 1954
How are you still alive??
High school, some of the best years of my life. Monte Vista ’88!!!! The year we defeated all in football, including De La Salle!!! Go Mustangs!!!
Now my son is going to DLS- go figure.
Middle School was the best. We moved the summer when I went into High School so it took almost a year to surround myself with a good group of friends. Senior year was wild!
Hated all of them.
@Concernicus~
Same here. Did not enjoy school at all.
Great minds think alike! I hated them all. I loved learning but hated my peers and how I was treated. Getting to DVC and finally being able to take lots of music classes and belonging to a group was the best thing in my life up to that point.
Parents, do your best to make sure your children have developed a passion for something reasonably wholesome before they hit high school or preferably junior high, and let them pursue it. It will save you and your child a lot of grief.
MDUSD elementary experience, two teachers stand out (early 1960s). First one nursed a large thermos and got progressively happier as class went on.
Other teacher practiced his fastball pitching using erasers and student’s heads.
Intermediate at Pine Hollow was enjoyable.
Pine Hollow…..7th grade……1983…….without a doubt the funnest year of my life. An unbelievable time. 8th grade sucked……….high school sucked.
Ayers … Will C. Wood … Pine Hollow … Catalina (Tucson) … Clayton Valley … All were equally great!
I enjoyed 2 out of 3. Elementary was just so carefree, I had lots of good friends. Middle school was so so as some started more risky behaviors and so many were rebelling. Also clicks really started developing. HS was great, met tons of new people and found I really could hang with anyone. Went to YV and with PHHS closing my freshman year student numbers doubled at YV. Clicks seemed to disappear and everyone seemed to get along. Hung with stoners, jocks and nerds and all were cool. The 80’s were such a great time!
Good for you Ripley, but I did a 4 year stretch at YVHS back in the mid 70’s before Northgate HS opened….. 4000 students crammed into YVHS was no fun. We were allowed extra time to get to classrooms because of the gridlock in the corridors. Teachers were overwhelmed with crowded classes and the school counselors were only concerned with ADA – “average daily attendance” which meant more money for the school. It was a drag.
@Dr Jellyfinger- I remember NG being built. Growing up in the area and playing youth sports I had friends at just about every HS in the Diablo Valley. Great area to grow up in. I never used my locker at YV since I had to share it with two other students! I don’t remember it being an issue as I only ever carried maybe 3-4 books total haha
I wasn’t really school focused was just there to have fun and make it to college.
I don’t think it would fly these days, my kids carried twice the books I did.
High school; I had lots of fun, and didn’t do much studying. However undergrad university was even better, because that is where I met and married my wife (while we were both in school).
They mostly all stunk, for me, but of the 3, high school was probably the best.
Elementary AND middle school. I was in the SFUSD gifted program and did things and went places the regular classes didn’t do. I had a stable group of classmates and we grew up together. Eventually hooked up with Michelle and Amy who taught me ALOT. Wow.
My history/home room teacher in the 8th. grade at Oak Grove Intermediate1966/ 1967 hated her class…the other teacher of that subject took her class to Sacramento in the spring of 1967 to see the Legislature . They got to see Gov. Reagan and the Black Panthers…they thought the armed , black leather uniformed Panthers were a Drill Team! I always liked Miss H. but she always treated me as if I was one of the bad kids.
Graduate school. It was the best of times. It was the most stressful of times (up to that point).
Of the listed choices, however, high school. It kept getting better with each stage.
Enjoyed them all but the United States Marine Corps. made me the man I am today. Semper Fi
High School……I got laid more than the other two choices, it was of paramount importance to me at that age, thankfully that changed after 40 years or so……slow learner, I guess.
Yeah, Ridgemont High was the best ! Oh that Spicoli,,,,,,he got lucky when Mr. Hand made sure he passed his class.
The one that taught you how to think instead of ‘what to think’….
(d) None of the above.
However, once I got into my Navy technical training pipeline, I was in my element.

Thank you for your service.
