For the 40th consecutive year, Concord has been named a 2021 “Tree City USA” by the Arbor Day Foundation to honor its commitment to effective urban forest management.
Concord achieved Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program’s four requirements:
- Forming a tree board or department
- Creating a tree-care ordinance
- Having an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita, and
- Issuing an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.
The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters.
“Tree City USA communities benefit from the positive effects that an urban tree canopy has year after year,” said Dan Lambe, chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. “The trees being planted and cared for by Concord ensure that generations to come will enjoy a better quality of life. Additionally, participation in this program helps cultivate a sense of stewardship and pride for the trees the community plants and cares for.”
Planting trees in an urban space comes with a myriad of benefits past the recognition of this program.
Urban tree plantings help reduce energy consumption by up to 25%, which will reduce general energy costs and help with the overall cooling of the city as well.
In addition, members of the community benefit from properly placed trees as they increase property values from 7-20%. Trees also positively affect the local ecosystem by helping to clean water and create animal habitats to encourage biodiversity.
so for a minute I thought: Neat
I’d can’t remember such an honor…
until I found there are over 3000 Tree City USA’s…
nothing to see here folks… move along…
The City sends the Arbor Day Foundation a big check.
The Arbor Day Foundation sends the City a bunch of cheap signs.
And a cheap sign that says the city really cares.
+1
Does this recognition come with a cash prize, a trophy or a ribbon we can proudly display?
Many homes come with a city-planted tree in the front yard which will eventually damage the sidewalk or get into your sewer lines. Both happened at our former house. We were responsible for repairs. So I had both offenders cut down and their stumps ground down without a permit. No one from the City complained.
Does that mean it’s illegal in Concord to carve “Anonymous loves Betty” into a tree in the park?
Forming a tree board is simple… all you need is a saw.
Oh boy….trees. Not as cool as those Spirit Poles though, right? Perhaps Mark D could write an Ode To Trees and hold another meeting. Once upon a time you could get some holy-guy to bless your tree, for a donation. Not now though, can’t use the peoples money for such nonsense without another protest. Maybe even a riot in the streets.
Did anyone bless those wonderful poles?
When was the last time anyone in Concord saw the City plant a tree?
Residents have planted trees.
Has the City?
Someone drilled a bunch of holes big enough for trees in Newhall and along Turtle Creek road. I assumed it was the City. Although they’ve been there (empty) for awhile now. Yeah, I guess it was the City.
Another point I’d like to make- Someone will eventually walk into one, or otherwise hurt themselves and find a TV lawyer to sue the City…
The pine trees that were planted on Pine Hollow Road in Concord were a huge mistake. Pine needles are always a piling up and houses in the area have them in their gutters!
It could have been worse. What if they’d named the road “Eucalyptus Way?”
Wait til they all rot and fall over like what’s been happening in Walnut Creek
I can’t help but wonder … which tree in Claycord is the eldest alive?
