With gas prices soaring to a shocking average of $5.92 per gallon in the San Francisco metro area Saturday, the Automobile Association of America is offering tips on how to save on gas.
The association reported an average price of $5.92 for regular unleaded gas in the San Francisco metro, which includes San Mateo County. The price was $5.84 per gallon in the East Bay, $5.83 in the South Bay and $5.92 in the North Bay. All prices are the highest recorded on Saturday.
California drivers are paying the highest average price per gallon in the nation, AAA said.
One of the most effective ways to save on gas is to slow down and drive the speed limit, according to AAA. On the highway, aerodynamic drag causes fuel economy to drop off significantly as speeds increase above 50 mph.
Those craving a fast hit of coffee or a burger should avoid the drive-through lane. Prolonged idling is one of the biggest wastes of gas – plus it releases pollutant into the atmosphere.
AAA also counsels drivers to avoid “jackrabbit” starts and hard acceleration, which eat up gas fast.
When driving in town, motorists should adjust their speed to time the traffic lights. This reduces repeated braking and acceleration that consume additional fuel, AAA said.
When approaching a red light or stop sign, drivers should coast down to a slower speed until it is time to brake.
Most AAA suggestions were taught in Drivers ED, yup am that ancient.
Oh, . . . that’s right ‘they’ eliminated it to save money !
Make a list of places you need to go, plan a route so you don’t have to double back.
Drivers should remove the state government which has enacted so many taxes and fees that gasoline prices are through the roof, which acts as a regressive tax disproportionately effecting the economically disadvantaged.
Using the A/C makes the engine work harder, thereby using more fuel. Open windows create wind drag, which will also cause the vehicle to use more fuel, but mostly at high speeds, and not so much at low speeds. So to save fuel, turn off the A/C while driving on city streets and roll down the windows. On the highway, the opposite is true, roll up the windows and turn on the A/C.
Personally, I don’t care for cold air blowing on me, especially on my face, so my windows are always down. Even in the winter, I’ll have the heater on and the windows down.
The best way I can think of to save money on fuel is to stop voting Democrat.
@Dawg…your final suggestion could not be more appropriate.
@Jeff (the other one)
+1
In most cases, it’s less expensive to have things shipped to your home rather than drive to a store.
Even with shipping/delivery rates increasing, it’s still cheaper to get stuff delivered whenever possible.
The average cost of just starting a car is $17.
Redonkulous.
Getting 24 mpg city in my CX-5, its about 3$ roundtrip to any location in Claycord. 5$ tops if Im making multiple stops all over…
17$?? Cough* bs* cough
Waiting for all the comments blaming a politician rather than who is responsible.
They are usually the party of “Free Market” also.. Watch them complain when businesses use their pricing power.
Yeah because the democrat government purposefully restricting supply has nothing to do with it Lmao.
We don’t have a free market FYI. The rules are made up by those who have power and those with power aren’t allowed to fail even if they should have already.
We live in a might makes right world, and anyone who disagrees doesn’t have the power to do anything about it.
Someone should tell Raggedy Ann that while the government has issued Leases, the are slow walking the permits that are required to drill on those leases. In other words, she told a 1/2 Truth. Surprise, Surprise, Surprise.
Ah, always a good reminder of the vast stupidity that is out there and why we have so many people still voting democrat, despite all the evidence of how badly this ends up hurting us. Thanks for this perspective.
Gas saving tip: You should’ve voted Republican.
Best tip yet Noj!
+2 … ya’ll beat me to the punchline
1. Plan and consolidate your trips. Make every mile count.
2. Don’t tailgate.
3. Remove unnecessary vehicle weight.
4. Anticipate traffic signals ahead (including STOP signs). Coast to a stop if you can.
5. Accelerate as if there is raw egg between your foot and the gas pedal.
6. Minimize the use of the air conditioner. Recirculate interior air when cooled off rather than continuously cooling fresh air.
7. Minimize unnecessary idling.
Been doing all of that for years. But I consider myself lucky that the various speed demons on the roads these days haven’t shot at me – yet.
…but drafting saves fuel 🙂
Good list. Also, follow Obama’s recommendation to solve all our problems and keep your tires properly inflated.
Excellent additions to the AAA list!
In hot weather, I use Max Air feature (windows up, “inside air only” being recirculated… temp adjustable).
Instead of planning a direct “out-and-back”, Brünhilda recommends saving up errands until you can make a LARGE “daisy petal shaped” route. Double the efficiency for the gasoline used!
Just for my own comfort/energy level, I plan things so that somewhere along the wide-end of the daisy petal route, I can eat and rest at a new (or favorite) restaurant.
Deliver less product, but charge more….. the ebb and flow of our capitalist system. You are seeing it at the grocery store, too, right? Where else?
You still will pay through the nose. This is what happens when an imitation person gets elected president. Come on man you don’t really believe Biden is real do you?
He’s real gone
He needs to be required to have a brain scan asap.
Corn Pop was framed!
I want to see Corn Pop interviewed on THE VIEW.
Aunt Barbara
First you need a brain. That could be a problem.
Gas saving tip: never trust democrats with policy and taxes.
8. Buy a 100K Tesla
9. Eat lentils and collect natural gas from excessive flatulence.
abandon your gas guzzling soccer mom SUVs and big trucks that tell the world about you. 🙂
Exactly what I would have said. Rather than an SUV, drive a sedan, a station wagon or hatchback if you need more space. If you need more seats, drive a minivan. They all handle better and are less of a danger to pedestrians. The pedestrian death and serious injury rate has gone up dramatically with the proliferation of SUVs and trucks.
How about you stick with your broom and stop telling other people what to drive.
No way! Brünhilda goes out about once a week and comes back loaded to the hilt. Frequently a friend or neighbor rides along and does her shopping at the same time.
Having once been a soccer mom (of three…. regular plus travel teams) …. and teen girls’ coach, I guarantee you it uses much less gasoline when you pack many passengers into the same vehicle rather than going the itsy-bitsy individual route.
That said, if Brünhilda DOES ever need to be replaced, I’m getting a fusion…. already have looked just for fun because it was so easy for me to get into and out of one of my grandchildren’s Nissan mini-SUV.
There already are about five companies marketing certain models as being “SENIOR FRIENDLY”.
Gotto go with Antler on this one…….NO WAY am I giving up my Z-71 Silverado. Guess that tells the world I’m cool because I drive such a cool vehicle.
Clayden- accidents and injuries have gone up with the proliferation of PEOPLE.
Pretty sad when you have to tell people to use logic and common sense. There is no cure for stupid. California is doomed and parts of this country are following suit…
Have you purchased an iron recently? The instructions tell us “ never iron clothes while wearing them”. We have dumbed down everything.
10. Admit you should have recalled Gavin.
Vote Democratic and get us out of these gas guzzlers. The Republicans have gone crazy (Jan.6,etc.) and will be against anything sensible or legal, for that matter.
The gas prices have gone up (greed is being investigated I hope)) and times are tough for commuters. Luckily, some of us go nowhere and just wait until battery cars get cheaper.
Thank you for saying the quiet part out loud. Yes, vote Democratic so you can have every little aspect of your life controlled by a bloated band of despots.
Yes, that greed from added taxes from democrats… They really should investigate how those taxes are being used…
Republicans will be against anything legal? Your comment tells us that you want someone to control EVERY aspect of your life.
Keep drinking your koolaid, troll.
If everyone follows these tips it will double the time it takes to get down Ygnacio Valley Road during rush hour. Good luck to y’all!
Did some digging.
Seems CA is unique, besides being controlled by DEMs, it’s a “fuel island”.
“… a location that does not receive any fuel through interstate pipelines, according to Kevin Slagle, vice president of strategic communications at the Western States Petroleum Association. The state’s fuel supplies are either produced in-state or shipped by ship or truck, costlier methods that are passed onto consumers.
In-state production covers about 30 percent of the state’s fuel needs, Slagle said. “The other 70 percent or so is imported from around the world, some from Alaska, but really mostly from the Middle East, Ecuador, countries like that…”

As a result of there being no crude oil pipelines into CA from other states CA has to imports 70% of it’s crude oil.

The Walnut Creek drivers save even more fuel: They just coast right through the stop signs.
As for all the battery car enthusiasts: One reason Elon Musk is so interested in Mars is to have a place to dump all the old toxic Tesla batteries. Curious how Joe completely ignores Elon.
🚴
LMAO. Yeah like people are going to slow down!! If they already don’t follow the rules of the road and speed, saving gas is definitely not going to slow them down.
Tip #1 to save gas money – move OUT out of State.
Here’s a tip on how to save money and reduce gas prices: Don’t vote for democrats who ceaselessly work to burden hardworking honest citizens with more and more never ending taxes(especially gas taxes).
