BART Board Member Removed After Dispute Over Location Of Residence

BART officials announced Thursday that Lateefah Simon was removed from the agency’s Board of Directors after a dispute over whether she lived in the district she represented.

According to BART, Simon’s current residence sits outside the bounds of District 7, which includes parts of Alameda, Contra Costa and San Francisco counties, making her ineligible to represent the district on the Board of Directors.

Simon said in a statement to supporters that she moved from her previous residence last year due to threats her family received as a result of her support for police reform.

She added that she had consulted with BART officials prior to moving and was “assured that the building is within District 7.”

“I would not have moved my family to this residence otherwise,” she said. “I am deeply disappointed about this situation.”

Simon was first elected in 2016 and served as the board’s president in 2020.

Board Director Janice Li called Simon’s removal “a loss to this board” and argued that few cared more about the transit agency than her.

“At every board meeting I’ve been in over these past few years, Director Simon has consistently spoken up for the most marginalized and has always brought the deepest compassion to educate this body and the public on issues that our communities and our riders face,” Li said in a Twitter post.

BART officials said an interim board member will be chosen within 60 days to fill the District 7 vacancy. Voters in the district will eventually choose a permanent successor.

Sounds like Lateefa wasn’t well-liked.

Quit your winning and go home. The rules are the rules.

Get with the program, Old Timer. There’s a different set of rules for “them.”

Two mouse clicks on the BART website and I am able to find the district maps.

So…. She says that had she known she would have gotten the boot, she would not have moved her family to safety….

Her family takes 2nd place to her ego????????????????

Ya beat me to it, S. Family or moolah? Safety or moolah? … MOOLAH!

Not what she said. She qualified her statement with “this residence”, implying she would have moved to a different residence within her district.

It’s very concerning that at least two people read that as not moving at all and keeping her family in danger. Goes to show what predispositions people want to have about others.

Looks to me like Lateefah Simon may have needed to move completely out of BART territory….
…once the CHRON put the news out that: “The call to defund the police has reached BART, where leaders pledged Friday to shift $2 million from sworn officers and fare inspectors, and instead spend it on unarmed ambassadors~~ Chronical 6/19/2020
(with picture of Board President, Lateefah $imon, as one of those newly compen$ated ‘amba$$ador$’. Which would be in addition to her nearly $70K income as the current President of the BART board… 🙂

It’s a tough job, but somebody’s gotta do it !

Jessica,

don’t be foolish, just moving won’t do her any good. It is easy to find peoples addresses or their place of work………

and of course, where are the BART Officials she was assured by…
Crickets from them??????

In honesty; I am not a fan of any of the BART Officials…

I’ll allow you the last word.
🙂

S:
I never said she shouldn’t have known better or should have been excused. I was commenting on how commenters on this article were deciding that her saying that she “wouldn’t have moved to that residence” meant that she would have stayed put and kept her family in danger. Which is NOT what she said at all. And how I found it concerning that people a) read what she said inaccurately and b) jumped to a monstrously wrong conclusion. I said NOTHING about if I thought she was in the wrong about moving outside of her district.

Again. Not reading exactly what was being stated and jumping to the conclusion that you want to hear. It’s so so sad that the loudest voices are the ones that don’t actually understand what they’re reading.

Don’t let the door hit you in the ass.

Blaming others because she was caught. Damn politicians!

Give me a break…..

Not surprised she lost her job since she was too lazy to look up a freaking map.

Bye Felicia! Oops, I mean Lateefa.

Get woke, go broke.

Typical “it wasn’t my fault” democrat behavior. They can’t seem to take responsibility at any level it’s quite pathetic.

Board Director Janice Li? That is a problem. Another requirement should be that these directors should be able to verify they actually use the system sometimes. According to articles I read, Li does not use BART at all, is a bicycle activist, and has no need for it. Having her on the Board is as ridiculous as having someone like Hunter Biden on the board of a Ukrainian gas company.

BART just voted to adopt new district maps on 3/10 which appear to make more sense than the current maps. Current map puts Berkeley and San Leandro with Lafayette and Orinda. BayView in SF is in same district as Rodeo.

New map will put WC, Lamorinda, San Ramon, Danville in one district.
Rodeo to Berkeley in one district. Bav View still separate from rest of SF, but grouped with Oakland.

….BS …she knew .. is there anybody responsible to replace her?

And the dog ate my homework. The only thing she didn’t do is blame Putin or Trump.

Lateefa sounds like a very dishonest person. Furthermore she blamed it on her safety but she wants to defund the police? She isn’t very bright either. Glad she is gone.

This is her Uncle, unfortunately I know the family, they’re still ingrained in the cesspool of CA and Bay Area politics….https://www.sandiegoreader.com/news/2012/apr/25/citylights1-timothy-alan-simon-commissioner/

She’s a social activist. She should stick with that.

The really mind-boggling question is how did she get elected?

@Anonymous….. You might be amazed at how many “Old School” Black Panther’s offspring are in Bay Area politics now. To answer your question, it’s called nepotism. For all you youngins, the Black Panthers were fine, upstanding folk that killed cops and had a big hatred for white people…not racist in the least.

By other brain-dead “social activists” that ONLY use skin color as qualifications.

How did she get elected??You need to ask?? She is Black and therefore she does not need to mind the rules that applies to everyone regardless of ethnicity/skin color/social status/ability to comprehend simple English!!
Using the excuse that she and her family has been threaten smells like Smollett.
Always jutting their hand out but not really qualified.

Is this the person who stands inside the 19th St. station most days and wishes everyone a happy (fill in the day of the week)?
