It’s Been Two Years Since The Concord K-Mart Closed – Do You Miss Them?

K-Mart on Clayton Rd. in Concord locked their doors for the last time in February of 2020, which means it’s now been two years since the building has been empty (except for the Halloween store).

Many Claycordians wanted to see Target move into the building, but back in 2020, the property manager, MerloneGeier Partners said “That was our first choice and Target was interested in the location. The issue is that Lucky has a grocery restriction on the property and won’t release it so Target won’t go forward without being able to sell some grocery products.”

There is a rumor that they’re still working on getting Target into the building, but that hasn’t been confirmed.

MerloneGeier Partners confirmed to Claycord.com one of the other plans they’re working on is to subdivide the building and lease to four different tenants. Spaces would range from 18,890 – 29,170-square-feet. The entire building is just a little over 90,000-square-feet.

As a square-footage comparison, Ross in the nearby Clayton Valley Shopping Center is 30,000-square-feet, and Target in Pleasant Hill is 115,000-square-feet.

QUESTION: Do you miss K-Mart, and what stores would you like to see move into the old building?

WC February 23, 2022 - 2:05 PM - 2:05 PM

Never even went inside. Nope, don’t miss them.

Chellee February 23, 2022 - 6:40 PM - 6:40 PM

Would like to see Walmart move into the building of where Kmart used to be

Randy February 23, 2022 - 2:14 PM - 2:14 PM

.. not the K Mart of 2 yrs ago but the old K Mart of maybe 10 yrs ago was pretty decent… to go in there – a Cabela’s or Bass Fishing store or an indoor shooting range .. maybe with archery too

Anonymous February 23, 2022 - 2:15 PM - 2:15 PM

A supersized gun store would be nice.

H February 24, 2022 - 1:59 AM - 1:59 AM

It’s within 1000 miles of a gun store, they won’t allow it.

JazzMan February 24, 2022 - 10:56 AM - 10:56 AM

Aww, hell NO! That’s the LAST thing we need.

Anonymous February 24, 2022 - 1:03 PM - 1:03 PM

@JazzMan We absolutely could use more gun stores. Most stores around here are overpriced and have a poor selection.

Dawg February 23, 2022 - 2:25 PM - 2:25 PM

I miss the old K-Mart, when a lot of their merchandise was of good quality at bargain prices. When K-Mart merged with Sears, they went downhill fast, and I stopped shopping there.
The only store I’d like to see move into the building is a WinCo, but they can’t have a grocery store there, so I don’t care what store or stores move in.

Badge1104 February 23, 2022 - 8:44 PM - 8:44 PM

Agreed. I used to enjoy Kmart, but in recent years they were selling questionable junk at high prices. I was wondering what was happening. No surprise it went out of business.
That Clayton road location there was a nice store and a nice garden center.
I’ll leave it up to the rest of you that live close by as to what you would like to see there.

nytemuvr February 23, 2022 - 2:43 PM - 2:43 PM

Make it a music venue, call it the Concord Coliseum ll, or Winterland East. They could sell “Corn snake on a stick”….Just a Wednesday afternoon pipe dream…….

Patty Jones February 25, 2022 - 10:09 AM - 10:09 AM

Hash pipe?

Kat February 23, 2022 - 2:50 PM - 2:50 PM

Yes

ConcordRez February 23, 2022 - 2:55 PM - 2:55 PM

YES! I used to run in there for all kinds of things. The other day, I wanted new curtain rods, replacement outdoor chair cushions, laundry detergent, bark, and some stockings. I miss having that one-stop shopping close to home

1791 February 23, 2022 - 2:57 PM - 2:57 PM

Looks like an indoor shooting range with a nice bar & grill/restaurant to me.

Stealthy Mama February 23, 2022 - 8:34 PM - 8:34 PM

Why not tear down the entire building & build a miniature golf course w/ a miniature Malibu Grand Prix just like the one in Redwood City, CA? They would be a cool place for the family & kids.

Stuart February 24, 2022 - 5:43 AM - 5:43 AM

Opened up for all the people that are still wearing mask so they can get together and socialize with each other 6 feet apart similar to the Halloween store the fear store

Jojothecircusclown February 24, 2022 - 5:18 PM - 5:18 PM

Read my mind … We had one in Murrieta down in SoCal … that place was so cool. … Or perhaps make an indoor skatepark???

Cowellian February 23, 2022 - 3:10 PM - 3:10 PM

It was a convenient place to shop when we lived in the Crossings. I still remember when a clerk there was bragging that K-Mart had just bought Sears. That didn’t work out well for anyone who wasn’t Eddie Lampert.

Target would seem to be a good fit for that location, even without a food section. We do have a Target in the same center as a Kroger, and it doesn’t seem like a big deal. Although Target’s grocery aisles do feel like an afterthought.

Pat February 23, 2022 - 4:55 PM - 4:55 PM

Target is projected to take over the Kmart location. I’ll try to get another update from city hall tomorrow.

Cowellian February 24, 2022 - 8:02 AM - 8:02 AM

Pat,
We’re looking forward to the update.

Bob February 23, 2022 - 3:10 PM - 3:10 PM

Every day!

Gititogether February 23, 2022 - 3:13 PM - 3:13 PM

Grew up in SF & never heard of Kmart…or Concord. One foggy bone chillin’ summer day, circa 1970, parents decided we would visit sister now living in Concord. It was about 105 in Concord and sister’s hovel on Clayton rd had no a/c. So we decided to head up Clayton to (I think A&W) and ended up at Kmart. On that Saturday, it was a hub of activity, with a vast and varied inventory at rock bottom prices. Father had been teaching me to play golf…with hand-me-down clubs, and when we sawr a child size 7 iron, he offered to buy it for me. Treasured that club for yrs.

I miss that era. K-Mart…and Sears and Monkey Wards thrived then and (weekend) shopping at those stores was F U N.

Exit 12A February 23, 2022 - 3:45 PM - 3:45 PM

.
I don’t miss Kmart. Their quality was ultra-cheaply made, many sales associates were trashy and less than helpful, and the stores fixtures and decor outdated (as in never renewed).
.
Walmart does a better job and that’s why they are still around… the corporation knows how to run a retail business.
.

Oh, please February 23, 2022 - 8:02 PM - 8:02 PM

I wouldn’t say that Walmart workers are less trashy or more helpful.

Tod February 23, 2022 - 3:58 PM - 3:58 PM

Nope. Garbage store with cheap crummy merchandise.

Cowellian February 23, 2022 - 4:03 PM - 4:03 PM

An old K-Mart in East Nashville has been turned into a bowling alley/music venue.

Jack February 23, 2022 - 9:10 PM - 9:10 PM

Corelli there is already a bowling alley a block from Kmart center

Cowellian February 24, 2022 - 8:10 AM - 8:10 AM

There is a former Kroger store that’s been turned into an indoor trampoline park. Another former grocery is full of bounce houses. Either beats having a Dollar Store wannabe.

Barge February 23, 2022 - 4:29 PM - 4:29 PM

Yes, I miss the convenience

Zantha February 23, 2022 - 4:32 PM - 4:32 PM

I enjoyed shopping at KMart for staples like laundry detergent , toilet paper, etc. Significantly cheaper than Target. What we need in Concord is a Wal Mart. Target is ridiculously over priced and over-rated. However KMart got real run down and even smelled bad the last few years. Hoping something goes in that eye sore soon besides a 47th Halloween store in town.

JaguarCat February 23, 2022 - 4:37 PM - 4:37 PM

I do miss K mart, I could always count on the store to provide me with good Texas Steer work boots, the tan ones for a good price and they would last at least 10 years however , neither Target, Walmart, or any other local places I have checked sells them, but I do agree that Kmart is a cheaper brand than target but the service and atmosphere at some of those Kmart stores were way under subpar but i think there should be like a place that has paint ball or airsoft, and you could have tournaments, and you could have free sponsorships for The armed forces with their cool standees , and local colleges and police academy signups. That’s what I would do. Concord has a lot of sporting goods stores but no where to let loose and have good old fashioned fun. Of course kids and people are going to turn to drugs because there is no structure or outlet for them. anyways I love this website.. Stay frosty ladies n Gents. haha I know i type like a redneck, Get R Dun

Cellophane February 23, 2022 - 4:38 PM - 4:38 PM

I’d still like to see a multi-level housing project.

Affordable condos through high-end homes all built in a park setting.

With self-driving electric busses to transport people to BART.

That would help a lot of families and bring in a lot of tax dollars.

John February 24, 2022 - 6:45 AM - 6:45 AM

Not a bad idea. Walnut Creek planning department does a better job of supporting multi-use projects. Thanks for sharing.

Patty Jones February 25, 2022 - 10:13 AM - 10:13 AM

You’re joking, right?
Isn’t the behemoth at Galindo & Clayton big enough for you?

Pookie February 23, 2022 - 4:54 PM - 4:54 PM

I miss the 70s/80s Kmarts

Pony February 23, 2022 - 5:10 PM - 5:10 PM

Yup. Even the last few years when the selection of things sucked. It was more convienent then going to Target or WallyWorld. Be nice to have a Walmart or even Target in there but Save Mart won’t allow that

Winnie The Pooh February 23, 2022 - 5:23 PM - 5:23 PM

I do not miss Kmart and it would be nice for Olive Garden to go in there. Perfect size for how popular the restaurant is!

Snakekeeper February 23, 2022 - 5:37 PM - 5:37 PM

I do miss the convenience too. I would love to see Bass Pro move in.

Jojo The Circus Clown February 23, 2022 - 5:57 PM - 5:57 PM

I remember well … my best friend’s mom used to take us kids to the little restaurant for lunch. Miss you KMart!!!

SAM February 23, 2022 - 6:10 PM - 6:10 PM

Growing up with limited funds, K-mart was awesome. For people with money (like most of you here) it wasn’t really needed. But my family really appreciated it.

Andrea February 23, 2022 - 6:44 PM - 6:44 PM

They should put in a variety of good, top notch food booths in there like at San Pedro Square in San Jose, but in a smaller scale. God knows Concord needs much better eateries.

Oh, please February 23, 2022 - 8:06 PM - 8:06 PM

No. Apparently, we are only allowed to have cookie-cutter taquerias and some slightly different Asian food places. That’s it.

Graham February 23, 2022 - 6:54 PM - 6:54 PM

I like k mart they had some good deals to bad there gone

Anonymous February 23, 2022 - 6:55 PM - 6:55 PM

Who cares what Lucky wants, it’s about what the Claycordians want. Bring Target to the area!! If not, make it a gymnastics/dance studio for the kids. Or bring some sort of entertainment for the littles.

M February 23, 2022 - 7:20 PM - 7:20 PM

Yes… who cares about what Lucky’s want. We need Target on this side of the city. Target has a limited grocery selection. I doubt people use Target for real grocery shopping. Get over it Lucky’s…

Lisa February 23, 2022 - 7:49 PM - 7:49 PM

@ anonymous. We don’t want your business .

badge1104 February 23, 2022 - 8:54 PM - 8:54 PM

Lucky’s won’t get over it and it won’t be allowed if groceries are sold by another store. You see it’s in their leases with the shopping centers that they could be no competition. Safeway does the same exact thing.
So they can let a Target in yes but it will be questionable as to whether they’re going to let that Target have those little grocery aisles like most stores do. It’s all part of the Master lease the shopping center has with the other grocery store. Just in case people wonder the logistics of it.

Dr Jellyfinger February 23, 2022 - 9:19 PM - 9:19 PM

Of course! Why didn’t we see it sooner?
Lucky’s has a silver/grey Pontiac parked behind the store!
It was them all along.

Luke February 23, 2022 - 7:07 PM - 7:07 PM

I’d love an indoor entertainment center, though that entire industry was decimated by COVID restrictions.

Mike February 23, 2022 - 7:15 PM - 7:15 PM

It would be amazing if Target would move in.

Dr Jellyfinger February 23, 2022 - 7:58 PM - 7:58 PM

It would be a friggin miracle.

Girl w/ Dogs February 23, 2022 - 7:25 PM - 7:25 PM

Ice Skating, Roller Rink, Go Karts, archery, darts, axe throwing, anything fun!

PF February 23, 2022 - 7:30 PM - 7:30 PM

A Roller Skate Rink would be fun for all!!!

Anonymous February 23, 2022 - 7:45 PM - 7:45 PM

They can have Target without the groceries.. someone needs to agree !!!

anon February 23, 2022 - 7:59 PM - 7:59 PM

I would like to know why the lights have been on 24 hours a day for the last 2 years.

Neighborette February 23, 2022 - 8:09 PM - 8:09 PM

I hate going to the mall so having the Kmart close to home with such a wide selection of items and not giving money to the slave driving and American job wrecking Walton family was awesome. My favorite pjs are from this Kmart, towels, and cosmetics ! It’s so sad. Wish something like Savers would come in…reuse is the future!

Bad Nombre February 23, 2022 - 8:25 PM - 8:25 PM

I will not miss KMart.

Perhaps a Kirker Pass Memorabilia Mega Mart would be appropriate in that space.

Jules February 23, 2022 - 8:47 PM - 8:47 PM

Nope I definitely don’t miss Kmart. I vote for Target. I get tired of having to drive to Walnut Creek to shop and eat at good restaurants. Which is another thing we’re lacking around here.

ConcordRez February 23, 2022 - 9:10 PM - 9:10 PM

Too many calls for guns. NO!

SAM February 23, 2022 - 10:24 PM - 10:24 PM

Haha good thing you’re not in charge of anything. You don’t have the authority or the right to say no with that tone. You better watch your mouth when you’re talking about my rights.

A beautiful indoor gun range is exactly what our community need to come together. A nice restaurant, a gunsmith and team competition would be great. I’d vote twice for it. Let’s go Concord! Let’s get it

Antler February 24, 2022 - 3:27 AM - 3:27 AM

Those of us gun owners who live in Concord still definitely have the right and the responsibility to push back on having even more “gun toters” coming from surrounding cities into the already murky, problematic Clayton Road corridor.

At least such an indoor range as part of the former Fry’s building would be closer to the police station. But my vote is not to have a gun range within any of this area’s city limits.

Livesteam February 23, 2022 - 9:21 PM - 9:21 PM

I miss Kmart. It was a place you could run in and get almost anything you needed. Not sure what there is about target people like. I have never found anything I wanted in a target. Wonder how long the contract is between the center and luckys?

Natalie February 23, 2022 - 9:56 PM - 9:56 PM

Trader Joe’s wound be so awesome at that location! They would get all of the business from Clayton and East Concord. Tax dollars$$$

CountryGal February 23, 2022 - 10:16 PM - 10:16 PM

Never liked K-Mart.
Please do not put a Target there.
It would be way too crowded and Target is a giant ripoff!
How can anyone shop there?
I had a gift card and most items were insanely overpriced.

A good store to put would be to move the TJMaxx on Clayton Rd. to the K-Mart location.
The current shopping center itself in is utter trash.

Maybe combine the TJMaxx with a Home Goods since it’s quite big.
We need discount stores, not Target.

Voice of reason February 24, 2022 - 12:20 AM - 12:20 AM

BRING KMART BACK!!!!

Cowellian February 24, 2022 - 8:02 AM - 8:02 AM

What’s in it for Eddie Lampert?

Antler February 24, 2022 - 3:41 AM - 3:41 AM

How about a home design center similar to the wonderful one which used to be on Concord Avenue? It had a fine luncheon area, too, and literally everything one could wish for to upgrade the decor of a home.

[Actually, my first choice would be for a Cracker Barrel, but corporate explains that they still are judging to see how well the Sacramento one “flies”….. plus I already know the K-Mart location is not near enough to major highway off-ramps to conform to their protocol.]

nytemuvr February 24, 2022 - 8:44 AM - 8:44 AM

@Antler….The home design center on Concord Ave. owned by the Rease family?

DD February 24, 2022 - 6:34 AM - 6:34 AM

I do not miss K-Mart.
I miss that there is nowhere to go to buy everyday goods and gifts.
We have enough grocery stores, Dollar stores, nail salons hair salons, small restaurants, I can go on and on

All big box stores are in the past.
It’s very hard to fill any empty space on Clayton Road. Stores want to be close to freeways and business areas
Clayton Road needs to go in another direction.

I don’t know what!! But the city planning over the years has made big mistakes. It will never be straightened out. Not in my lifetime.
It is all up to the owners of the Properties to sell or develop and be approved by the City Planning.

GOOD LUCK

John February 24, 2022 - 6:52 AM - 6:52 AM

In the ever changing world of retail, it makes sense to get one of the top performing retailers, like Target. I’ve lived here about 6 years and I had never been to Lucky’s (My Mom shopped this brand in LA in the 70’s). I went mid day on a Saturday and it was vert quiet with lots of stocking opportunities (empty shelves). My opinion is this is not due to any supply chain issues as all local Safeways are fully stocked. I believe this Lucky’s is not long for this location due to poor performance.
If this location does close it makes it easy to add Target.
If not, the developer should sell off the Lucky’s portion of the plaza. This would then allow the developer to redevelop the plaza to include new retailers or other options.
On another note: why are the lights on 24/7 in the old K-Mart? Seems wasteful.
Thanks for listening.

momosfriend February 24, 2022 - 8:45 AM - 8:45 AM

Yeah for Concord City Council who do Nothing to attract tenants to vacant buildings.
Since all the council members are stupid. I’m here to help.

We can create laws and rules to combat the blight. Similar to SF. Vacancy Tax. Tax the property owners 3% of the property assessed value monthly on vacant buildings. After 4 months of vacancy the tax starts. This will help motivate these slimy landlords to find tenants. Clayton rd is a good place to start.
Fry’s old building, Kmart. The list is long and doesn’t start/stop on Clayton rd.
Seriously why haven’t they done this already? Why are they so stupid. There idea is to create a ghetto downtown at the Lakes? What the heck is wrong with these idiots.
The new Concord Mayor looks like a puppet? Does he have any original ideas?

How come most Concord City Council members don’t engage in Claycord?

They must be scared of the public. Another reason to dump cronyism in Concord politics and let the public vote for council members. These sheep do nothing.

Dana Estates February 24, 2022 - 9:02 AM - 9:02 AM

I would like to see an Entertainment Center for Youth, Roller Skating Rink, or even someone above suggested some kind of Music Venue.

American Citizen February 24, 2022 - 11:02 AM - 11:02 AM

Indoor gun range and outdoor store. Gun rentals. Survival gear. Wall to wall ammo and gun accessories. Get it now. Y0u will likely need it the way things are going these days.

Lynne Ellis February 24, 2022 - 4:24 PM - 4:24 PM

Loved K mart for the things you normally would not buy, just really loved walking through it

Reasonable February 24, 2022 - 4:59 PM - 4:59 PM

Easy fix, Spin off and sell property of Kmart site. Doubt agreement with Lucky has a clause that prevents this.

Sharon W. February 24, 2022 - 9:55 PM - 9:55 PM

Yes, I miss K-Mart in this location. Was very handy for all sorts of items without driving in traffic for 30 min. like to target. And they did carry some food items, so I don’t see what the problem would be in allowing Target to come there. We don’t have much shopping in this area, so it would be nice to have more.

GAE MORA February 26, 2022 - 9:23 AM - 9:23 AM

I liked K mart. They had better quality clothes than Wal Mart. And close to my home. So convenient to go there for all kinds of quick needs. Leaving all the signs up seems like they may return; but I know that is not going to occur. I like some of the fun things people above have suggested. So many empty buildings throughout Concord. Especially out this way. Like Beverley’s was evidently not allowed to become Salvation Army? So, that store still sits empty. And on Treat near Clayton Rd, a few empty stores. I like the idea of charging extra tax on empty stores,

Km February 26, 2022 - 5:28 PM - 5:28 PM

Didn’t really care for K-mart. Handy sometimes. Would love to see Target or a Trader Joe’s in the neighborhood. Please, please no Walmart!
