148 teachers and 3,894 students were absent from school today in the Mount Diablo Unified School District, according to MDUSD Spokesperson Theresa Harrington.
135 of the 148 teachers required substitutes. Some teachers do not oversee classrooms, so they do not require substitutes when they are absent.
There were 58 unfilled teacher assignments today. Just like last week, the open classes were covered by other teachers during their prep periods, some students were divided in order to go into other classrooms and some classes were covered by other credentialed staff.
The MDUSD says they inadvertently under-reported their student absences for last Thursday, Jan.6. The actual number of students absent last Thursday was 4,982. The 2,364 students students they initially reported were elementary school absences.
The district cannot say how many of the absences are due to COVID-19.
The MDUSD has 29,000 students and about 1,600 teachers, according to its website.

And so it begins.
Have an American Mexican friend in San Diego. He got covid and waited 8 days to go to a hospital. The hospital put him on a ventilator for four days with no other treatment. He wasn’t getting better. After four days his family hired an ambulance and took him to a hospital in Mexico where they give you full treatment and the ventilator. He just got to Mexico yesterday. I will give an update when I get it. My question is if you were put on a ventilator in CCC what treatment did you also receive? Anyone know?
@Ricardoh~
Hope your friend recover well.
Maybe up-date us on Friday’s ” Whatever” post.
Good Question….about treatments here in CCC.
I’m going to see if I can find out.
Or maybe someone else may chime in with info.
I can almost promise they did more than “just put him on a ventilator.”
Don’t have much yet except he is talking OK. The EMT s showed up at the hospital to move him and the hospital gave them problems. They checked his oxygen level and it was 94. The EMT’s put and oxygen mask on him and his oxygen level went up to 98. He was taken to the border where he was transferred to a Mexican ambulance. He has pneumonia in both lungs. He said it only hurts when he coughs. I have no idea how this was put into motion. Both of his sons are US Federal Law enforcement agents.
Fingers Crossed, you’ll hear later, and all is better.
Thank Goodness for his 2 sons.
“The district cannot say how many of the absences are due to COVID-19.”
I wonder how many of those 148 teachers are in Florida right now.
What is the normal numbers for this time of year? I know we have many student friends still out on holiday, not sick. Please do not close school agin!
Wake up parents. MDUSD has corrupt leader in office who lie to the school board and have a lot of unaccounted money our tax dollars go to. They depend on you not asking questions so they can continue to lie .
Train wreck district with a failed superintendent who checks off the diversity box being paid handsomely. Horrible with (some) abusive teachers. Which is worse? Mt. Diablo USD? Or West Contra Costa USD?
Unfortunately MDUSD teachers are your typical BLM supporters with a victim mentality. No one is oppressed . Thank goodness grocery store workers don’t have this mentality we would all starve.
@Grocery Store Person
Yes, it’s common knowledge they have a daily wellness check . Do a little research on the teachers and get back to me.
Private schools. Home schooling (if you are or have access to a capable instructor). Reliance on state education needs to be broken. Now, imagine this level of government control in healthcare (not that we are far from it).
@Grocery store person
Where are you getting your information from? My kids are in private school and there has been next to no issues.
@Grocer store person
That has not been my experience at the schools my children attend.
@Grocery store person
Sounds like here say???
@Darwin – Challenge!
St Perpetua in Lafayette went to remote learning this week because of three Covid cases on campus. I’d demand a tuition rebate if I sent my kid there!
LESD, Acalanes UHSD and OMSD are open with single-digit absentee rates and minimal staffing disruption. The community will not tolerate teachers holding kids hostage.
Families in the MDUSD are getting PLAYED by opportunistic, lazy conniving dirtbag teachers! Pollyannish parents enable the miscreants’ chicanery.
Couldn’t pay me to live out there.
The system is imploding upon itself. This is necessary for it to collapse – so we can Build Back Better. I worked in public schools for about a decade – I saw so much dysfunction, malfeasance, even corruption – I had to quit. Maybe we really CAN create a better system? Public schools were designed for the industrial revolution / and “Common Core” (teaching to the test) is from Pierson (UK/Crown). I would love to see a new system rise from the ashes. I worked at the HS level – bring back “hands on” learning / and allow the youth to “debate” (it is necessary for human brain development). Start small businesses- and let the students run them. Include them in basic living skills (cooking, cleaning, mechanics, building, science, etc….)
Great comment from Clam Bake. What a shame it has become.
