The “Water Cooler” is a feature on Claycord.com where we ask you a question or provide a topic, and you talk about it.
The “Water Cooler” will be up Monday-Friday at noon.
Today’s question:
QUESTION: What business do you think should move into the old Fry’s Electronics building in Concord?
Talk about it….
“The Chum Bucket” seafood restaurant.
Plankton rules.
Is this the Krusty Krab?
Levitz
I wish Buddy,
I loved it at Levitz
Walmart or WinCo, and the self-righteous snobs that complain about Walmart don’t have to shop there.
Hell yeah! I am tired of driving to Martinez to shop at Walmart
Unless it is a Walmart like the rest of the country and not the crappy variant that we have in the local area, I would disagree.
Yes! Walmart!
Yes Walmart. But needs to be a supercenter.
Multi level go kart track.
Bam.
Rainbow Road?
Cabelas ….. with indoor shooting and archery range
Agreed.
Perfect idea. 108RS
Amazon Bricks & Mortar store, but probably a big Homeless Shelter
Roller rink
A Walmart Supercenter would be nice. Between that and Costco, you would probably not have to shop at Safeway or Nob Hill again. Safeway and Nob Hill are high and their produce is crap, all because of their bloated union. They have to pay those union wages somehow, and they do it by offering poor product at high prices.
Speaking of Safeway. The other day I got gas at the Safeway station on Contra Costa Blvd. I needed something at Safeway so I stopped at their grocery store there. That place is the worst laid out grocery store I have ever been in. Nothing matches any other Safeway. The guy that designed that place must have been on drugs.
I second that, a Walmart SuperCenter. Since the politicians steal and waste too much of our money, residents can use a place like this to help make ends meet.
Ricardoh,
The Safeway north of the Sun Valley Mall on Contra Costa Blvd. began life as a Mervyn’s. It was a Mervyn’s before a Safeway. The aisles are much longer than most Safeways. Maybe the designer was on aspirin.
Yes…that’s what we need, a Walmart Surpercenter! The WS ought to have large meat/seafood section with a way better…and reasonable price. Target in Pleasant Hill do not have much meat selection. The price of meat in Safeway, Nob Hill Foods, and Lucky has gone insanely high. $14.99/lb for a skirt steak? A quarter pound skirt steak is not enough to make either a steak burrito, quesadilla or tacos.

Best buy would be Great!

COVID test site.
A California version of Casa Bonita (in Colorado).
Google it!
@The Professor
Did what u asked & googled it. In BIG red letters said it was temporarily closed.
Matt & Trey (South Park Creators) bought the place last summer & were supposed to have reopened the place by now. Covid restrictions might be delaying things. Here is a video that shows the place off.

I think there needs to be some competition within the grocery stores – I vote for an Aldi’s.
YES!!!!
Barracks type housing for the homeless population.
*****TURN IT INTO A PRISON*****
2nd best idea after a shooting range. 108RS
Jeff-
Why not both?
A ROLLER SKATING RINK! OH PLEASE OH PLEASE OH PLEASE!!!!
two story go cart racing.
There’s room for a roller coaster around the racetrack too.
A charm school for millennials.
Bwahaaaa!!!
Furniture store like Breuners!
Whirlyball.
It’s fun.
Oxbow market – see Napa version for reference. Indoor/outdoor food focused market/restaurants. Since Park n Shop doesn’t have many features, you can add fountains, trees, a small green space, etc.
Address if you’re in Napa 610 1st St, Napa, CA 94559-2602
BFF Out!
It’d just fill up with homeless trying to get out of the cold. I don’t think that part of Concord is affluent enough for that kind of business to thrive.
How about all the homeless flowing all over PH and Concord the last weeks, they must have cleared the canals.
A Walmart Supercenter, or a super duper, up-to-the-minute, expansive Target store. One or the other is more than needed in the area. One-stop shopping, great prices, extensive merchandise selection, something for every member of the family … tvs to treats.
I really like Walmart but I can’t shop there anymore.
Practically everything they sell is made in China.
Dr Jellyfinger, other than high-end retailers, what stores sell products that are not made in China? Just about everything we own is from China in one way or another. Even products made in the USA are made with Chinese parts. A lot of prescription and OTC drugs are manufactured using ingredients from China, clothing is made using Chinese material, new cars are assembled with Chinese made components, and so are electronics.
Biff’s Pleasure Paradise
Fry’s supermarket……when I moved to Concord in 1980 the store there on Alberta Way was a Fry’s…….best peroshkis I ever had
.
A new, bigger, and cleaner Home Depot.
.
Living Spaces would go great there. Most suggestions above require a larger parking lot and that location doesn’t actually have a very large parking lot, but the building itself is huge. The Living Spaces in Fremont is the same with a not so large parking lot and a huge building. It would seriously work well.
I think an escape room would be awesome. Or, something like Dave and Busters. Something fun. Even some sort of arcade with the old type pacman and donkey kong games.
Unfortunately, any kind of game center would just attract trash from Antioch and the gang bangers across the street, just like Round One in the mall. Even Chuckie Cheese, in the same center, attracts sketchy people to their game area. No thanks. Walmart would be a great idea.
A roller skating rink. A Winco like they have in Redding. It has everything and good prices.
An indoor shooting range connected to a large sporting goods store with a well equipped hunting paraphernalia section.
Yes…I was thinking the same thing!!
….see above….
A jail.
With a building that size, with that much space, I wouldn’t mind seeing some kind of arcade go there. That or perhaps another electronics store like Video Only. Sometime also in the future and it MIGHT happen, there is a SMALL possibility that CIRCUIT CITY might come back to Concord. I just checked and it appears CC’s website is back. Who knows though? As of right now the only Video Only stores are in Dublin, San Rafael, Mountain View, and San Mateo. As I said though, with that much space, A Video Only or a Circuit City would be a good fit
Hogwarts magic store.
Strip Club
A vaccination/testing super center with mask vending machines for all the hypochondriacs in this area.
Yes for Winco!!
An independent private school. We need more room for all the people wanting to get out of the sinking ship that is MDUSD.
Brilliant!

A multi-story corporate industrial processed made to look like home cooked food Olive Garden!
indoor paintball field
Indoor gun range. Huge gun store stocked with all the best products. Gun rentals and qualified instructors for new shooters.
see above
Ice rink or roller rink
Injun Casino
I like a number of the suggestions above (gun/bow range, skating rink, 2 story go Kart track-awesome!), and would throw in indoor volleyball courts for consideration, could even truck in some sand for some beach volleyball courts (though that would be challenging in maintaining). Another alternative would be a wood shop, where carpentry tools/machines not easy to have in home are available for rental (planers, lathe’s, etc.).
* Huge Night Club with the latest in wrap/techno Music, fancy lights and high tech entertainment
* Indoor Firing Range (with full auto weapons rent-able) under some supervision
* Topless Bar (a Texas size club) to put concord on the Map!
And then place one of the those “This is a Drug Free Area”, and bam!
No business will open during these economic covid times. Find employees? Institute tests or cards, limit amount into store etc…isnt anyone paying attention? Security? etc…business is not welcome or wanted any longer unless you are on a list of govt. approved retail establishments.
IKEA. The one in Emeryville is great but too hard to get into and out of to the freeways. The furniture there is down-sized and would fit Concords’ apartment/condominiums/smaller homes needs just right. Also, the parking would be perfect, easy access to main roads and (3) freeways.
