Caltrans Advises Drivers To Avoid Travel To The Sierra

Caltrans Director Toks Omishakin is urging drivers from the Bay Area and around the state to avoid non-essential mountain travel until weather conditions improve.

Caltrans has reopened the main routes from the Bay Area to Lake Tahoe and points east — Interstate Highway 80 and U.S. Highway 50 — but roadway conditions remain challenging with heavy snow causing extensive delays and requiring tire chains.

“If you must travel, make sure you’re prepared,” Omishakin said.

He urged people who want to visit family and friends to “stay off the roads, conditions are treacherous.”

Caltrans has redirected all available crews into the mountains to reopen roadways, bringing operators from as far away as the Bay Area to assist. The department has 1,350 field staff clearing mountain highways, working 24/7 in 12-hour shifts, and has deployed more than 600 snowplows statewide.

Caltrans has recorded more than $22 million in storm damage to state highways during the current winter storm, not including snow and fallen tree removal costs. Hundreds of trees have fallen onto highways, slowing the snow removal process.

Caltrans shared the following safety tips for motorists who must travel to the mountains:

  • Before heading out, check Caltrans QuickMap (http://quickmap.dot.ca.gov/) for the latest road closure and chain control information.
  • Carry chains and be ready for winter driving conditions.
  • Make sure your vehicle is in good working order by checking your brakes, wipers, antifreeze, heaters and exhaust systems before you leave.
  • Do not try to go around highway closures by using secondary roads.
  • Slow down for Caltrans crews, California Highway Patrol officers, and other emergency responders out trying to help control traffic and clear the roads.
  • “Don’t Crowd the Plow” – tailgating or trying to go around snowplows can result in potentially dangerous situations.
  • Have an emergency kit in your vehicle that includes blankets, water, food, a shovel, gloves, a flashlight, and sand or kitty litter to provide traction in case your vehicle becomes stuck.
  • Bring cash in case power is unavailable for credit card transactions.
  • Keep your phone charged in case you need it in an emergency.

Additional URLs

Caltrans CCTV Map https://cwwp2.dot.ca.gov/vm/iframemap.htm
and once there move map to show Nevada then click on green hypertext icon and One-Stop-Shop popup opens, right click it, select open link in new tab and left click. (Firefox)

One-Stop-Shop for Rural Traveler Information page is easier to navigate than Caltrans page, but doesn’t have Live camera video or ability to go full screen.

Both sites are worth bookmarking along with Caltrans QuickMap page.

Good tip!

Better yet, if going to Reno/Tahoe, just go here to Nevada’s DOT map. Super easy to use. It has all the California parts of the Sierra Nevada, but only the Nevada live web cams:

*Use windshield washer fluid with a below 32º rating. The regular will freeze and no washers.

Janus December 30, 2021 - 6:35 PM - 6:35 PM

Been there done that… hard to find non-freezing fluid in the valley. You can add rubbing alcohol or white vinegar to your regular fluid to lower the freezing point.

Janus
The freeze proof stuff is usually purple altho it will loose it’s color when stored in a hot garage. I live in Nevada and was told early on to buy the “purple stuff”

So True, Janus!
Once I was caught up in the mountains with ‘valley’ windshield washer fluid.
All the places in the mountains were totally sold out during the storm, so I realized that if I bought rubbing alcohol from the store and put it in the washer tank that that would keep it from freezing. It worked and it saved me.

Many windshield washing fluids with ‘non-freezing’ properties have been taken off the market in this state thanks to the enviro-wackos doing their ‘feel good’ work for us to follow.
Purchase it in a state that uses common sense when making laws.

Was at one of those mini WalMart’s earlier today. Lot of empty shelfs.
They said most of their supply comes from Sparks and the trucks can’t get thru.

So there.
