California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Saturday announced that the Western States Scientific Safety Review Workgroup is recommending that all adults fully vaccinated with Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccines receive a six-month COVID-19 booster shot.
The workgroup concurred with recent federal recommendations that booster doses be given to anyone 50 and older or residing in a long-term care facility and anyone 18 to 49 years old.
Individuals who received a Johnson & Johnson vaccine should receive a booster dose two months after their first shot. The workgroup provided its report to the governors of California, Nevada, Oregon and Washington Saturday.
“As we approach the winter season and another potential surge, it’s critical that people get their booster to strengthen their immunity and protect themselves from COVID-19,” Newsom said.
Because unvaccinated individuals remain at much higher risk of COVID-19 than those who have been vaccinated, the workgroup continues to strongly support vaccination against COVID-19 for everyone age 5 years and older.
On Friday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorized expanding booster shot eligibility for the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines, and the CDC affirmed that decision. The workgroup reviewed and affirmed the federal decisions in meetings Friday evening and Saturday morning.
The workgroup is made up of nationally acclaimed scientists with expertise in immunization and public health. It will continue to evaluate other COVID-19 vaccines as they go through the federal process.

The fact that this working group even exists is a nice reminder that Newsom and his ilk were totally happy to play the vaccine skeptic role under the Trump admin. This is just a leftover of some cynical political theater. Does anybody think this group serves any purpose whatever?

So 6 months after my last Pfizer shot or 2 month after my J&J, i am supposed to go back in for another one? So does that mean for J&J that every 2 months I need a shot and Pfizer every 6 months .. or are these ‘booseters’ supposed to last longer than 6 months? Do we get to change to 7 or 8 months?

In terms of deaths, we are doing worse this year than in 2020 over the past few months.
For Aug it’s 65 deaths in 2020 and 69 in 2021
For Sep it’s 39 deaths in 2020 and 85 in 2021
For Oct it’s 20 deaths in 2020 and 39 in 2021
I suspect that’s because the economy is open for the most part and some people have chosen to not get vaccinated.
In Contra Costa County 87% of the females age 5 and older are vaccinated. The unvaccinated 13% have accounted for 69% of the deaths among females in the last 60 days.
83% of the males age 5 and older, are vaccinated. The unvaccinated 17% have accounted for 59% of the deaths among males in the last 60 days.
