The “Water Cooler” is a feature on Claycord.com where we ask you a question or provide a topic, and you talk about it.
The “Water Cooler” will be up Monday-Friday at noon.
Today’s question….
What is one holiday or other day of celebration (Valentine’s Day, Halloween, etc.) that you wish didn’t exist?
Talk about it….
Any paid day off is welcome. I like them all.
Here is a chance for all of you Columbus haters to shoot off. I think Columbus should have a whole week not just a day.
Sorry Ricardoh but Columbus did not “discover” America. He discovered the West Indies but not America. It is know that the Vikings made to the American continent centuries before Columbus (I learned this in an anthropology glass at UW 1978). The entire Columbus “discovering” America thing was just a myth/fable we were fed in school
I guess I must have missed the part of Ricardoh’s comment where he said that Columbus dicovered America.
Yes the Vikings discovered America and left. If that is the University of Washington I feel sorry for you. I had a friend who was a professor there so I know. Let’s put it this way Columbus discovered the new world for all practical purposes. He was the only one willing to sail off the end of the world to do it. Don’t tell me he was headed for Asia we all know that from grammar school. Just admit that Columbus was a gutsy guy.
The so-called indigenous peoples all came here from somewhere. Italians treat Columbus Day as Italian Heritage Day, and I’m OK with that. I’d also be OK for picking a day to observe Viking Days, but I want to see the menu first. Lutefisk would really dampen the celebration.
St. Patrick’s Day!! Despite having some Irish ancestry, I just don’t care for it.
I’ll drink to that!
…. anytime for a paid day off – I’m in!
Valentine’s Day sucks I cannot get a date lol
I don’t wish any of them didn’t exist. Each one of them is a part of American culture. Anybody wanting to ban a holiday, in my opinion, is anti-American, and shouldn’t be living in this great country of ours. If they want to add a holiday, that’s a different story, more power to them. For instance, some folks want to change Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day. A better way to deal with it would be to leave Columbus Day alone, and celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day on another day.
People also have a choice in this country, if they disapprove of a certain holiday, they don’t have to celebrate it. The same goes with Christmas, Easter, and other religious holidays, if you don’t like them, don’t celebrate them. If anybody has a problem with Mother’s Day, and want to change it to Birthing People’s Day, my advice to them is to seek help, there is something seriously wrong with their thinking process.
Any excuse for a party, right? I’m in for most holiday celebration, but St Patrick’s Day is a very big deal in our house. I enjoy marching in Nashville’s Veterans Day parade, but I tire of reminding people that Memorial Day isn’t about veterans.
Earth Day.: A communist inspired tool used to indoctrinate the yoot of this country
Most people don’t know this.
I concur. Any “holiday” intended to push a political agenda beyond all else. We seem to have added a number in recent years. I can do without all of the “—” History Months as well.
I totally agree.
You can also add Cesar Chavez Day to the delete list.
How about going back to celebrating both Washington and Lincoln’s birthdays. Maybe we could make Thomas Jefferson’s birthday a holiday while we’re at it; we already celebrate his death day (July 4).
Christmas.
We don’t need to have a holiday as an excuse to be good to each other, we just need to grow up and act like that naturally.
4th July! I’m English 🙂
“Juneteenth” was created as a Federal holiday!! I thought such motion is suppose to go through Congress??!
What is the matter with Columbus Day??!! “Indigenous Day” — Good Grief!!
How about Easter??
Pretty soon what is recognizable for the USA will disappear!!
.
Juneteenth… it’s a farce.
.
Earth Day. Dumb.
.
Presidents’ Day should be split between Geo. Washington and Lincoln. It’s lame that it was melded.
.
We could have Vice President’s day. Well, that’s a little generous. Perhaps “Vice President’s Hour” would be more appropriate. Let’s all have a moment of serial killer style maniacal laughter……..
Yeah, I’d say a tie between Earth Day and Juneteenth…
I agree with Dawg about the traditional holidays, and Pacman about the recently created ones with a political agenda. Interesting comments.
