Contra Costa Supervisors Decline To Extend COVID-19 Eviction Moratorium

The Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors decided not to extend its temporary prohibition on certain evictions of residential and small-business commercial tenants impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The current ordinance is set to expire Sept. 30, the same date the county’s temporary prohibition on rent increases expires.

Supervisors voted 3-2 to discontinue the ordinance, with District 1 supervisor John Gioia and District 5 supervisor Federal Glover voting to continue.

Gioia argued the pandemic is still disproportionately affecting residents of color and of lower-income, and wanted to extend the ordinance until at least the end of the year.

Board chair Diane Burgis said she was sympathetic to the people that are still hurting, but “I believe we need to move on. The economy hasn’t fully recovered and everywhere I go, all the business people I speak with, people are trying to hire, and we need to get people back to work.”

The board did unanimously adopt an agreement authorizing the county administrator to enter into an agreement with the California Business Consumer Services and Housing Agency to administer the county’s share of federal emergency rental assistance program 2 funds. According to a staff report, the program’s next round of funding would provide more than $70 million in relief to county households behind on rent or utilities.

Yay good. Cut off the lazy people. Anyone who wants to work can find a job. It might be lower paying than they want boo hoo.

It is about dam time some common sense is being used. Stop the money gibe away as their are more than enough jobs out there to be had.

First good thing they’ve done in forever. Now get rid of the vaccine mandates in the county!!

The party’s over.

Its about time there are help wanted signs all over. People aren’t going to work if they can just sit home and get things for free.

Interest decision and the opposite of what I would have predicted from this group. Maybe the 3 the voted to end the moratorium own rental properties?

Time for another federal or state mandate. Maybe the cdc or fcc, or blm can issue an order.

@Schmee. I actually don’t know about this eviction moratorium, but I agree 100% with your sentiment. I’ve been disgusted with many of my peers that remain unemployed for extended periods because they won’t “settle”. I’ve had good jobs, I’ve had lousy jobs. But I always had a family to support. If you can’t find the pay you are asking, you might have to take the pay they are offering.

Good! Landlords still owe their mortgage payments. Renters don’t get a free ride, especially when vaccines are available and tons of businesses are hiring!

So what you are saying is that landlords should get a free ride by having tenants pay their mortgage? I like your style!!!

No, Gwen, nobody gets a free ride.
Property owners are required to pay for property they own, and tenants are required to pay for property they rent.

@Gwen. Free ride? You can’t be this stupid.

c’mon Ma’am!

Great news, now get rid of the unemployment boosts. So many places hiring there is no need for any boost.

Fantastic, 100% back this! People have gotten free handouts for far too long and many businesses have been negatively impacted because people have been sitting on their behinds, complying “nowhere’s hiring”. It’s about time people earn what they’re asking for again.

The only reason they voted it down was due to the State & Federal money arriving for these programs that will continue to extend them. I always love how our politicians keep telling us that we are in the middle of a pandemic….therefore….we need to spend, extend, and bend the taxpayers over.

I’m surprised Karen Mitchoff didn’t virtue signal a yes vote for her constituents in the Monument Corridor.

Gioia’s and Glover’s votes were a given. I guess they don’t care that the majority of landlords are couples who count on a single rental for retirement income.

The courts are going to be full of property owners trying to get back rent from renters. Where is the bail out from the feds for property owners? A bunch of BS!
