Flex Alert Extended Through Today, Residents Asked To Conserve Power

The agency that runs the state’s power grid has extended a Flex Alert through today, as more hot weather has been forecasted throughout California this week.

Under the Flex Alert, The California Independent System Operator is requesting that the pulbic conserve energy from 4-9 p.m. to avoid rotating power outages as the demand for electricity is the highest during those times.

California ISO officials initally issued the Flex Alert on Tuesday evening.

During a Flex Alert, residents are asked to conserve energy by doing things like setting their thermostat to 78 degrees or higher; avoid using major appliances; turning off lights they aren’t using; unplugging unused items; and using fans to cool their home instead of air conditioning.

Flex alerts are called for when generation or transmission outages are stressing the electric grid or when hot temperatures persist. With above-normal temperatures expected through much of the nation’s western states this weekend, California ISO officials are expecting an increase in electricity demand, mostly from air conditioning use.

More information about Flex Alerts can be found at www.flexalert.org.

So California is supposed to be leading the nation in tech innovation and forward thinking, and yet can’t generate enough power to keep the lights on?

This crisis was created by a Democrat super-majority who shut down natural gas power generation without an adequate replacement. Instead of flex-alerts being a rare event, they have become commonplace. What industry or employer would want to put up with that kind of uncertainty? How long will the citizens of California accept highest in the nation power costs along with this kind of unreliability?

Well stated.

I wish I had the answer.

Some people seem to believe that suffering is a good thing.

I believe prosperity is a good thing.

A suitable reward for hard work and clean living.

Some people believe that our elected representatives are our leaders.

I believe that the People are the leaders and that the people are inadequately represented.

The people need to reclaim their role in the management of government.

Until that happens, the self-serving crooks will manage the people.

Sadly,

Chuckie
Everyone in the west is on a power alert. In NV we have been told to set AC’s at 80 (which is where mine is most of the time) don’t use major appliances between 4pm & 8pm, turn off unnecessary lights etc as we are sending some power into the CA grid. Washington & Oregon who usually sell a good amount of surplus power to CA has no surplus this year do to lack of rain as both run mainly on hydro. Seattle has had no measurable rain since mid June per my family that lives up there. I don’t remember a time Seattle has gone that long without measurable rain.
Northern NV has had no measurable rain since mid June as well. No thunder, no rain no anything. The only thing saving us is that NV Energy has lots of wind farms and solar farms. As much as people like you try to deny solar it is the only way to go at this point. PG&E and SoCal Edison need to convert to solar asap as do major business and all government agencies. It’s “get with the program” or suffer. Nevada has jumped is jumping on a solar train and it seems to be working well. Like CA we have on average 320 sunny days a year so harnessing that energy is a logical way to go

So folks, how come we are still trying to develop the Naval Weapons Station???
Recall Newsolini.

Newsom has ZERO to do with the development of the CNWS. That decision is the sole responsibility of the Concord City Council

And the only real issue for that development is water. All buildings within that development should be equipped with solar panels so they can generate their own energy. Actually all new construction in CA should have solar panels to generate their own power. The only thing stopping it is people stuck in the 1950s with their thinking and PG&E/SoCal Edison as they would not be able to generate huge profits for shareholders. As long as that is going on nothing will change. Remember this is America so it’s profit over service and safety

Ask all you want.
.
Funny that California imports alot of electrical energy from other states who use natural gas and nuclear energy to power their turbines.
.
Wind, solar, and hydroelectric sources are unreliable and insufficient to power CA.

Well Folks September 9, 2021 - 10:31 AM - 10:31 AM

Solar is far from insufficient for CA. With an average of 320 days a year with sun CA is perfect for solar. It is PG&E and SoCal Edison that are against solar as many companies would install panels and generate their own power. PG&E, SoCal Edison and the PUC all need to be broken up. None function as they should and are only concerned about profits for share holders. Electric, gas and water need to be not for profit entities as they are a necessity. This BS of profit before service and safety needs to be eliminated.

@Well Folks
.
Clearly you don’t have any clue about electrical generation and distribution. Powering the ENTIRE STATE from solar, wind, and hydroelectric plants is a fool’s pursuit… your pursuit.
.
You want government-run electricity? More government? Gee… isn’t it the PUC, government appointees and industry insiders, who was supposed to oversee PG&E and their service & safety? Your fellow elected democrats regularly collude with PUC members and utility companies!

The Professor September 9, 2021 - 12:54 PM - 12:54 PM

I 100% agree with you.

I’ll add that the CA politicians who complain about global warming and don’t want to use nuclear and/or nat gas generators are only virtue signaling. A true believer would demand that CA divest it’s electricity imports from states that use nuke/nat gas. But they won’t because then things would really suck and the average Joe dem voter might notice the incompetence.

One other thing: when you import the electricity, it costs more than if you produced it yourself.

Well Folks September 9, 2021 - 1:14 PM - 1:14 PM

You display the typical horse & buggy thinking of Claycord. The 2 best electrical companies in the bay area are run by the cities of Alameda & Santa Clara. A friend of mine in Santa Clara has a 2300+ sq ft house and in the summers was paying considerably less to cool it than I paid for an 1100 Sq ft townhouse in Concord because of PG&Es rate gouging
Gee tell me how great PG&E is when it’s rate payers pick up another tab for a fire they started (Caldor). What is not sustainable is how power is currently controlled & generated in CA. Both PG&E and SoCal Edison are all about profit and nothing about service & safety. Solar panels on private property can eliminate personal need for the power companies. Take a look around at country buildings & some local schools they have solar panels and are generating their own power. And if you want nuclear power great they can dump the waste in your yard or Concord or elsewhere in CA. Nevada has blocked the dumping here from the feds & other states

RoRo September 9, 2021 - 12:38 PM - 12:38 PM

Dear Idiot California Independent System Operator, fans do NOT cool and do not take the place of air conditioning. Fans only move around the existing hot air.

Gittyup September 9, 2021 - 1:57 PM - 1:57 PM

So true! After running for a while, those little motors on fans generate their own heat. I have a ceiling fan that I could actually use as a heat source in Winter, if I wanted.

wesley mouch September 9, 2021 - 12:53 PM - 12:53 PM

Well, folks, look up a few power terms like “base load”, “unreliable energy”, the “duck” (night electricity generation) and contemplate the necessity for nuclear, and if that’s too hard, natural gas turbine (jet engine) power generation.

Unfortunately, as much as you want it, solar and wind will NEVER provide the power necessary for the 40,000,000 residents of our state, simply because it’s UNRELIABLE!

During frosty winter nights, with radiation fog in the Central Valley, there is no wind. Contemplate that.

Better leadership for all!

Ricardoh September 9, 2021 - 1:06 PM - 1:06 PM

You would think there would be a moratorium on building with power and water shortages. Walnut Creek is considering building about a four hundred person expensive retirement center on open space next to Seven Hills Schools and Heather Farm. There are people fighting it but you know how that goes. Under the table passes.
