CHP To Implement Maximum Enforcement Period This Weekend To Crack Down On Impaired Drivers

In anticipation of the increased traffic this Labor Day weekend, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) will implement a Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP).

The holiday enforcement effort began Friday, and continues through 11:59 p.m. Monday, September 6. To help keep motorists safe, officers will focus on removing impaired drivers from the road. Impairment can be caused by more than just alcohol – it also comes from cannabis, illicit drugs, and prescription drugs, or a combination of any of these.

Traffic safety efforts by the CHP during the 2020 Labor Day MEP resulted in more than 900 arrests for driving under the influence. Sadly, 46 people died in crashes throughout California that weekend – many of whom were not wearing a seat belt.

“Our officers are dedicated to making the roadways safe for all who use them,” said CHP Commissioner Amanda Ray. “Driving sober or designating a sober driver is the responsible choice to keep you, your passengers, and other motorists safe.”

If you suspect that a driver is impaired, keep your distance and call 9-1-1. Be prepared to provide the dispatcher with a complete description of the vehicle, license plate number, location, and direction of travel.

Well I’m glad to hear that they don’t do maximum enforcement the rest of the time!

Works for me. And nary of mention of “paid for through a grant by the state office a yada yada disbursing an endowment by the federal office of blah blah” like when Concord has roadblocks and checks everyone’s papers. If a law enforcement agency can’t perform its duties for lack of funds or because it can’t balance its books, that needs to be corrected systemically, not having occasional “law enforcement events” when federal pork rains down. This is why our national debt will kill us and the once mighty dollar is quite not so mighty anymore. For every bureaucratic hand that must be greased on the journey from taxpayer to police officer for these DUI checkpoints, how much is lost to “friction”? How many cents on the original dollar does Concord receive? Federal money should be for federal projects. Concord DUI enforcement, in my opinion, should not be a federal project.

Geez thanks for implementing maximum enforcement this weekend, how kind of CHP to do so! Does CHP want a cookie!?
Enforcement should happen 24/7 isn’t that what tax money is supposed to be going toward? I forget where I read that fines are reduced for those who “can’t afford” to pay, so how are we supposed to expect to have safe roads when enforcement is done on special occasions and people are being given a pass constantly?
I miss that “Traffic Jamming” section with Janis. Maybe if we still had that section here it would help to put pressure on the local police departments to do more enforcement but pretty sure those hell bent on defunding the police will have a fit if strict enforcements were to happen.

The number of CHP patrolling in any area at one time per 10k people on those roads is so insignificant getting pulled over you got better odds getting hit by lightning around here.
I haven’t seen a CHP on patrol in so long around the freeways I think they were driving fox body mustangs a it was so long ago..

Well if I wanted to drive under the influence, the best place to do it is in Pleasant Hill. You will literally not be stopped even when doing 80 in a 35. Definitely recommended as Pleasant Hill PD stopped doing their job months ago.
