Contra Costa County Library is holding a series of events and giveaways next week to celebrate Free Comic Book Day.

It’s the 20th anniversary of the first Free Comic Book Day, an annual promotional effort to attract new readers to comic books.

Usually held on the first Saturday in May, the series of events were postponed until August due to COVID-19, library officials said.

People can visit any library branch in the county between Monday Aug.16 and Saturday Aug. 21 to receive a free comic book and can also attend a series of events, including an introduction to Charles M. Schulz and his famous comic “Peanuts,” a cosplay panel discussion, and an online superhero storytime program.

People can visit https://ccclib.org/free-comics to sign up for the free events or to find more information about the history of comic books.

CLAYCORD FUN FACT: Free Comic Book Day was actually created in August of 2001 by Joe Field of Flying Colors Comics on Treat Blvd. in Concord. It’s now celebrated in over 2,000 comic book shops worldwide.

Anything but the new “I am not Starfire”…

the industry has been circling the drain for a while now. After the new “development” with Tim Drake, I’m thoroughly convinced that back issues are the only way to go.

Free Comic Book Day founder and Flying Colors Comics owner Joe Field AKA Captain Four Color is an under-celebrated local superhero. Between him, Mr. Christmas, and the Singing Flag, Concord was a cultural hot bed of the Bay Area and a neat place for my kids to grow up. His project is something about Concord that is ACTUALLY “world class”.

Comics books are pretty much priced out of the comic business and are often referred to now as graphic novels. But they still have a use. When I married I gave my entire comic collection to my brother. He used them to improve his own reading.

Mr Field is a nice guy. His daughter swam on my swim team as a kid her name alludes me right now. She was my age and gorgeous and very nice.

The Comic industry has become “WOKE” Now Batman’s assistant Robin Is BI sexual. So much for comics ???????????

I learned to read with Mag Magazine. 🙂

I still remember that Spiro Agnew comic: “Spiro Agnew is a spirochete.” What was that? 1971?

. Good stuff! I too, was HEAVILY influenced by Mad Magazine. It opened my young mind to political, historical, and cultural satire.
