Walnut Creek City Council Approves Police At Nordstrom After Several Grab & Run Thefts

by Tony Hicks – The Walnut Creek City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved an agreement between its Police Department and Nordstrom, allowing for a uniformed officer to be present at the Broadway Plaza store, with Nordstrom reimbursing the city for the officer’s overtime.

A series of “grab and run” thefts in the area, including at Nordstrom, by “organized retail crime groups” prompted the move. The plaza’s Apple store struck a similar agreement with the city, after seeing similar robberies. Police have said the officer’s presence eliminated Apple’s problem.

The council officially approved $231,514 for the move, which will last for a year and be repaid by Nordstrom in quarterly payments. Officers will volunteer for the assignment and be paid overtime.

A staff report for the meeting said vehicles belonging to the same groups targeting high end stores around the Bay Area, have been captured on video around Broadway Plaza.

“These thefts have resulted in hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost property and a perception that Nordstrom may be unsafe for patrons,” the report says. “The Walnut Creek Nordstrom has experienced instances of this type of crime. Nordstrom security staff and management is concerned about the safety of their employees and their customers.”

The move won’t affect Nordstrom’s regular security staffing. Officers will be subject to the regular police chain of command and be able to respond to larger emergencies across the city, if necessary. The agreement will last from Aug. 4, 2021, to Aug. 4, 2022.

So Nordstrom is going to pay the cops 80+ dollars an hour since they will be on overtime when they could just hire their own armed guards for 25 an hour. Makes financial sense for sure.

Jeff August 4, 2021 - 4:33 PM - 4:33 PM

As I explained to the city council last night, Nordstrom is transferring the potential lawsuits to the city if criminals are stopped.

You have a choice here. Either allow the police to do it or it won’t get done. What actually needs to happen is the law changed to reduce the liability when protecting your property. No one wants to lose to that kind of lawsuit. If the crooks see the police on the property they may be deterred. I’m all for it. The more police the better. That’s what they are getting paid for. Should put them in every store.

Jeff August 5, 2021 - 8:17 AM - 8:17 AM

Ricardoh,

The smart officer working in CoCo should just waive at the suspects as they run by given the current laws and DA Becton. Maybe the criminals will not be very bright and be deterred by the officers presence.

Stay woke WCPD and keep bringing in that crime *insert eye roll*

Bigjoker August 4, 2021 - 3:12 PM - 3:12 PM

So, wait!? Are the counterculture morons / Democrats want to Defund the police, and this has caused and unprecedented increase in crime especially Violent crime. Thefts have skyrocketed and just now or civic leaders realize this and are approving Overtime to try and stop it. How about supporting law enforcement, funding, and providing the training and equipment needed for them to do their jobs. I don’t know maybe try holding criminals accountable and prosecute them not let them out with a slap on the wrist. I am so sick of good law-abiding citizens suffering because of meathead politicians! Get rid of Newsome who has singlehandedly destroyed one of the best states, get rid of slow Joe and the rest of the Communist democratic party and let’s get back to making America great. If you hate America, I say leave, go to the country you are trying to turn this once great nation into.

Agree!

Bdpirate August 4, 2021 - 3:17 PM - 3:17 PM

Alrighty… now give police full permission to shoot the looters as they exit the store with the merchandise and everything will begin to stop..
Absolutely no warning shots will be given take them down immediately as a exit the store.
I suspect the police won’t do a dang thing just like they didn’t do a dang thing for all the looters rolling through Walnut Creek destroying property and stealing as before what good is more police watching a store when they’re not going to do anythin….we shall see

OverWhelmed August 4, 2021 - 3:56 PM - 3:56 PM

@Bdpirate
Why would they do anything? They try to stop a criminal and they get fired, and arrested for it. Their hands are tied with the liberal defund the police and the let me give you a talk about how bad it is to steal. And don’t do it again. Ya I don’t blame them for not doing anything

We had a chance to roll back Prop 57 but there was
too much $$ spent against it with the thought that reform was what was needed. Thanks Jerry Brown and all of those who made such a mess of our state by shortening sentences and changing felonies to misdemeanors. How’s that working for you?

Anonymous August 5, 2021 - 12:07 AM - 12:07 AM

Californians are generally idiots. I say that as a California native.

The Fearless Spectator August 4, 2021 - 3:33 PM - 3:33 PM

Well it’s a minor acknowledgement of the problem, and that’s a breakthrough. Really all it will do is provide comfort to shoppers and a visual deterrent to low lifes….maybe.

The police are very aware the D.A. simply won’t prosecute. So are the criminals. Why bother with an arrest and the accompanied paperwork when it won’t go anywhere anyway?

Let’s start by dumping Newsom. Then focus on getting rid of D.A.’s who don’t do any D.A.-ing.

Old Timer August 4, 2021 - 3:49 PM - 3:49 PM

All you hear is we don’t have enough police or the money to pay for more crime prevention. So if you personally have money you can buy police protection. What bull crap 💩

Googlar August 4, 2021 - 4:02 PM - 4:02 PM

What’s the point of police presence is theft is de facto legal?

Mr pink August 4, 2021 - 4:48 PM - 4:48 PM

so long as the police are allowed to at least club them as they’re running away; take out a knee. Otherwise, what’s the point?

Rapidrate August 4, 2021 - 5:23 PM - 5:23 PM

Sounds like some of the “magic” “celebrated” peoples of America strike again! Sad state of affairs, although it is poetic justice to see the smug limp wristed white liberals of walnut creek being victimized by their own stupidity. 🤣

WC August 4, 2021 - 6:58 PM - 6:58 PM

Shouldn’t the liberal city council hire people to help carry their loot out to their cars?

Dr. Jellyfinger August 5, 2021 - 6:46 AM - 6:46 AM

I agree, making these poor folks collect reparations without any assistance is practically slavery!

RANDOM TASK August 4, 2021 - 7:43 PM - 7:43 PM

anyways these city councils t
hat either bend over or take money or are just evil against america
and actually believe that no police and no prosecutions is a great idea

can get everything coming to them
seriously if i were a bent person looking for some justice
i would find every address of those council members selling out america and its freedoms
and get those addresses to their beloved criminal constituents of theirs

and have them embrace their culture they are enforcing upon us

whats good for the geese should be good for the corrupt anti american so called public servants who side with money and power and use us as fodder and stepping stones to power

Well, I did call the mayor a moron to his face.

Winnie The Pooh August 4, 2021 - 8:13 PM - 8:13 PM

I thought it was ok to steal as long as it was under $900?? I feel bad for law enforcement in CA. Criminals seem to have more power then our police officers.

The Mamba August 4, 2021 - 8:27 PM - 8:27 PM

Nordstrom has to pay extra for WCPD to do its job?

Aunt Barbara August 4, 2021 - 9:50 PM - 9:50 PM

Let’s hope they hire big buff officers, like the Police used to be.
Does Walnut Creek even have any?

Cautiously Informed August 5, 2021 - 7:07 AM - 7:07 AM

I don’t blame the police department’s. It’s the fault of the feckless ‘woke’ politicians, and the criminal loving DA.

chuckie the troll August 5, 2021 - 7:43 AM - 7:43 AM

I understand that Walnut Creek is going to start placing “Walk, Don’t Run” signs in the shopping District in an effort to deter crime.

john g August 5, 2021 - 8:15 AM - 8:15 AM

Just hire private security guys who have special forces and navy seal type backgrounds. Looters will think twice before trying to mess with these guys

Ricardoh August 5, 2021 - 9:55 AM - 9:55 AM

john g
Finding security guards even giants is not the problem. The problem is liability laws. Juries who give money to the undeserving.

Ricardoh August 5, 2021 - 9:52 AM - 9:52 AM

This is what happens from bad law. So all our different opinions mean nothing without changing the law. With what we have for politicians there is little chance of that. They call themselves progressives but they are actually marxists. The voters of California have been bamboozled by marxists. Nordstrom paying for the police is just a very minor problem compared to all the others.

Rolaids August 5, 2021 - 12:28 PM - 12:28 PM

Eh? Maybe the city should apologize to Nordstrom and refund some of those taxes they’ve been paying all these years. I wasn’t in the room when the deal was cut to bring Nordstrom to Walnut Creek, but I’m imagining it might have included rhetoric about what a nice, clean, safe city with a friendly, professional police department Walnut Creek is. It seems to me the city is not holding up its part of the relationship. If it’s going to be like that, Nordstrom might as well move to Bay Point where the rent is cheaper.

FPN August 5, 2021 - 12:41 PM - 12:41 PM

Hire bouncers.
