A person driving on Kirker Pass Road in Concord struck and killed a pedestrian crossing the road at 5 a.m. Saturday, police said.
The 25-year-old man had been walking across Kirker Pass between Clearbrook Drive and Myrtle Drive when he was hit by a vehicle heading southbound on Kirker Pass, according to police.
The driver, a 30-year-old man, stayed at the scene and cooperated with police. The pedestrian died at the scene, according to police.
Police are still investigating, and any witnesses are asked to contact Traffic Officer Parsley at (925) 603-5963.
Something isn’t right here. why is someone walking kirker pass at 5am in the morning??? But at least it wasn’t a hit and run, at least the driver stayed and listened to police, most people wouldn’t nowadays. But seriously, who takes a walk or walks around that area at 5 in the morning??
Why couldn’t they walk there? There is a neighborhood right there , the pavilion is there, lots of people walk in the mornings. Certainly should be careful crossing but there is no reason to wonder why someone was walking…. That’s odd.
could be walking in a hurry to work?
I exercise at the gym at 5am.. We’re not all on your time
Prayers to both families.
Uh, I live in that area and walk early in the morning. Not sure why you would think that would be such an oddity. RIP
People walk there all the time. Most people want to get their walking or workout in while it’s cool out, or before work. I start at the gym at 5:00am This is terrible. RIP
Prayers to all families involved and the driver involved
My heart goes out to the family and also the young man involved. He stayed at the scene, so no unkind words are needed. That is a very bad time of day on the road for pedestrians.
.
Clarification please….
.
Within a designated crosswalk or “jaywalking”?
.
Of course it was jaywalking and likely a homeless person.
Between Clearbrook and Myrtle, there’s only one designated crosswalk and that’s on Myrtle. Regardless, RIP to the pedestrian and hopefully the driver isn’t traumatized over this.
He wasn’t homeless he has a family and a community that cared about him.
Oh, please..
What an insensitive comment. How dare you just assume, seems like you are the type of person whose rides their horse high. I personally knew this man and he was an incredible person. Maybe think before you type when death is involved…
Thats a very high visibility area. You would think anyone walking would be easy to see.
I have walked in the evening after sunset to get home. It is not as visible as you might think. There are no street lights after Concord Blvd. towards the Pavillion.
At 5am when is dark out? People speed 65-75 down that hill so, it’s not that visible. Maybe behind your keyboard it is. People get hit and kill in that area from time to time. It’s a race track and people like you assume it’s highly visible, you don’t know if he it adjusting his radio or texting someone, just use the crosswalk people.
It’s still pretty dark at 5AM.
If this was indeed Jaywalking, then maybe the police could start enforcing the laws already on the books for that crime? Maybe dissuade people from taking that ‘shortcut’?
What makes you think they aren’t enforcing Jay walking? They aren’t fortune tellers, they can’t predict time and location that a person is going to Jay walk. Do you think we should just line the streets with law enforcement? Think about what you type before you hit submit.
+1
and the judges need to put people in jail, stop letting people off because the left doesn’t believe in incarceration
it is part of the plan to destroy America, stop punishing those who commit crimes so please start fighting with each other, then the state can take over.
I don’t know if you’ve noticed but Government from the Federal to State to County to City isn’t in much of an enforce the law mode right now.
In fact, we are in the midst of a lets not enforce the law and decriminalize everything mode.
I’m not 100% sure jaywalking is a crime anymore and even if it is, did the departed need to do it? If so Olly Olly oxen free, that seems to be the official criminal standard in this county.
Oh you people had better pay attention to Senate Bill 82, authored by Senator Nancy Skinner (D-Berkeley). It will turn robberies under $950 that don’t involve weapons or cause serious injuries into petty thefts.
Pelosi’s strong arm robbery would only be punished by up to 1 year in county jail under this law…..
I’ve seen people “jaywalk” walk or run across Clayton Road affecting traffic around McDonald’s many times right when cops are driving by and they never do anything. Ive heard that if you jaywalk and get hit by car you may get a ticket/fine instead of the driver. Its just a take your life into your own hands type of thing now, instead of getting a ticket from a cop as they have more important things to do. If you get hit its your fault for not running across the road fast enough, ornusing a crosswalk. Then add in at that area he died, people are not gonna stop very fast coming down the hill at any speed in a 4k+ pound vehicle so you run across there your playing frogger with your life. Don’t want to increase the chance of dying don’t jaywalk, I don’t unless I can get across safely and not affect flow of traffic.
Oh gimme a break.. jaywalking the police should be concentrating on?
I’ve been jaywalking for 50 years and if your too stupid to wait for no cars or can’t cross a street without tripping and get run over that’s your stupidity at fault.
Enforcing jaywalking laws on the books is useless.
I have walked in the evening after sunset to get home. It is not as visible as you might think. There are no street lights after Concord Blvd. towards the Pavillion.
Not saying this is the case, but often I see people flying down the hill at 60mph (I think it goes to 35-40 at the bottom). I always stay in the right lane cuz of this. Prayers for both parties.
Speed limit on that section, all the way to Concord Blvd, is 55MPH. So while 60MPH is over the speed limit (by 5MPH), it is hardly ‘flying’.
Passed scene this morning, two Concord PD units had fast lane blocked off, preserving scene. Between Greek Orthodox Church and high voltage transmission towers.
Adult Grandson with me had never witnessed an accident scene with body covered awaiting Coroner’ arrival.
Speed limit on that part of Kirker Pass is still 55 mph, 45 mph zone begins at Palm trees just before Old Kirker Pass Road.
I lived on Myrtle Dr from 1962-2014. Yes cars fly down Kirker Pass but never was a pedestrian hit! However neighbors walked early every morning. Unless we were there we don’t know what happened.
All we know it a family lost a loved one and a man is going through hell he somehow took a life 🤦🏼♀️
Much prayers are needed.
Saw some people hanging there last night paying their respects. Watched as the person in the car with them drove the wrong way down Kirker Pass at Kirkwood in order to make a U turn. Not a very safe u turn as there was traffic coming and this is a divided highway.
Reading all of these comments made me think that we all need to calm down and have more compassion for one another. Practice kindness and understanding. We may think someone is a box of rocks but we don’t need to say it.
@testy testy agreed. The world is so decided these days. And everyone is so quick at pointing fingers and needing to be right. What happened to live and compassion
Why all the guesswork?
All of you are taking a wag at the details…. why?
Geez! You might as well just consult the Magic 8 Ball.
I’m sorry for the guy who got hit and his family. But it’s not like we haven’t had this conversation about this stretch of Kirker Pass several times before. And in the absence of hard facts, people are naturally going to speculate.
Shall we all bow down to you now?
People walking driving whatever someone died here have respect for the family at a time like this.
Use crosswalks follow the laws don’t speed. My thoughts and prayers go out to the victim and his family.
Tragic event, with one young person unwittingly taking another person’s life. That hill is a deadly speed zone and no matter how fast or slowly the driver was proceeding, another person is dead. I hope they start putting a scarecrow police car outside the orthodox church, to discourage people from speeding down that hill. RIP to the person who lost their life and to the driver, my prayers are with you also.
