It appears the Bel Air shopping center on Treat Blvd. at Clayton Rd. in Concord will be getting a makeover, sometime within the next two years.
Plans have been posted online by Lockhouse Retail Group in Walnut Creek, showing what they envision to be the future of the shopping center.
The plans show Staples leaving the shopping center in 2023. Other stores and businesses that appear to be leaving are Dollar Daze (they’ll be moving across the street next to Little Caesars), the U.S. Post Office, and the smog station on the corner.
The middle of the center, in between what is now Staples and CVS, will be constructed into a space for a grocery store, and the location of the smog station will be a potential spot for a new drive-thru restaurant, according to the plans.
The plans can be viewed by clicking on this link.

hmmmm that place is a rat ridden bum hole
even the “smog” station is leaving and the post office lol
so lets see what will come
a salvation army…bum housing…equity center or a snake oil store
make over all you want the city councils policies are why they are leaving
i mean even the post office lol
through sleet or rain and snow the mail will be delivered…
but man we can not stay here its horrible …..
the city council several years ago mentioned that anything beyond the bart station and todos dineros park is none of their concern
they are focused on the small percentage of sanctuary illegals housed in low income housing and the banks that are still there
the rest of the city is low on the totem pole …..
Sanctuary. Illegals. Bums. You sound like quite the compassionate individual.
Compassionate or not he has a point and facts don’t have feelings…
Mr Pink-
Compassion is when you spend your own money. Compulsion is when you spend someone else’s money.

Finally.
Long overdue. I remember 30 years ago there was a Citibank on the corner across from the former Cocos/Mels in the corner of this parking lot I’d go there with my mom and they always had danish butter cookies out on a plate for anyone to take. I loved going to the bank. The shopping center has gone down hill ever since.
I actually didn’t notice it’s a Citibank again there. No cookies I bet tho
Its been citi bank for years… ive banked there for 20 years.
I like the idea of high-rise condos instead of shopping.
That property could hold a thousand condos.
Think of all the tax revenue.
Think of all the more money the City Council could spend without regard to the needs of the people.
And the bike lanes.
OMG.
There could be thousands more bike lanes that nobody uses.
Think of the possibilities.
Personally, I’m in favor of microhouses. Because, obviously, homeless should take priority over bicycles and apartments.
Just think about it – that parking lot can easily fit a couple hundred sheds! Wouldn’t that be an uplifting development for the area!
Ive been saying this for years!! It’s on the bus line to BART, it’s across the street from a major grocery store, starbucks, and restaurants which gives it somewhat of a walkability score. It could vitalize that whole area so it’s not such a armpit.
I would like a more sustainable development here than a re imagined shopping mall with ridiculous parking no one will use, that will go stale in another 50 years.
I like the 80% chance Target will take over the old Kmart location approximately 18 months from now.
Target won’t be coming there, so long as Lucky holds a non competition clause in their lease.
Target is part grocery store that would challenge Lucky.
I believe there was some issue with leasing it to target because of Luckys having exclusive rights to selling groceries.
Not going to happen.
Lucky’s has a no grocery store clause in their lease agreement.
Not being able to sell groceries is a deal breaker for Target.
“Luckys is welcoming the idea of a Target and at this time the specifics are being worked on. Eighty percent chance they will take over the Kmart location within 18 months.” … from a very reliable source. So there ya go.
There have been 3 people who stated what we all read in Claycord months ago about Lucky’s having a “no complete” clause in their lease, thus Target wouldn’t be a fit in that mall. Twice you said “from a reliable source”. What, pray tell is your source?
I’m actually surprised that they didn’t propose a mixed-use development, since that is all the rage these days. This place has been an eyesore for years, so bad that even the Salvation Army moved out!
I used to work at John’s Imported Liquor in the 1980s … just across the street … that place has always been a bit sketchy. That was when ToGo’s actually made hella yummy sandwiches before getting “corporatized”
Thirty plus years ago, there was a grocery store (I think it was Lucky) where Staples is now. Then they moved down the road to the space where Food max is now and Safeway went into a new center on the corner of Treat and Clayton Road. So now add another grocery store to the area? Everything old is new again.
At one time, around 1990, there were 4 Lucky’s on Clayton Road between Treat and Ygnacio Valley. One had been an Alpha-Beta.
I was thinking I remembered three Lucky’s on Clayton Road between Treat and Ygnacio Valley, but Cowellian’s right. There were four. As for supermarkets, in the early 1970s it used to only be the Alpha Beta for miles.
Silva — In the early 70s Ralph’s was there. Clayton and Thornwood, and the old Lucky’s (Clayton & Treat) that no one wanted to shop at unless you lived in Canterbury.
That’s a handy post office. Sorry to see this go
I agree
No more drive throughs needed, too many already on Clayton Rd.
Even if it’s a IN N OUT or CHIK FIL A???
I agreed, not happy about the drive through there. The Starbucks one on the corner is a mess.
Agree, adding another turning lane like proposed will create more traffic and more headaches, lets take the drive way entrances off the main road.
@Truths
I’d be surprised if In-N-Out went into Concord for a few reasons.
1) INO tried for years to get a Concord location and the city just wasn’t having it. At least as far back as 2001. They had a deal going at/near the Solono Drive-In that got shot down in the mid 2000s.
2) INO apparently has a very mathematical plan for where they put their stores based on population and sales at adjacent stores. Considering how slow the Antioch/Pittsburg store is, and how well Pleasant Hill does, I doubt they’d be trying to move into suburban Concord.
@ Jessica
The Antioch/ Pittsburg In n’ Out is slow?
Are you actually talking about the business being slow?
You gotta be kidding! They are busy as hell everyday, all day!
I have NEVER seen that location without a long line !
Chick fil A is building a store less than a block away…. slow?
CFA does not think so.
You gotta be kidding me.
Did the owner die?
I shall especially miss Staples, the smog station, and the Post Office (which I hope will move into a space in Treat Shopping Center across the street).
If a grocery store moves in there, then there will be major issues between their enormous delivery trucks and those of CVS because the access/off-load alley behind the stores was way too narrow from the very beginning.
I’m finding the thought of losing the Post Office worrysome!
Any chance of an Arby’s?
GREAT Idea! There are literally ZERO Arby’s left in the bay area…closest one is Fairfield I think.
However, I wouldnt be surprised if the Dutch Bro’s that was suppose to come to the lot near Strictly Togo Pizza, moves here instead since its a better location. Dunkin already proved you can have more than 1 coffee spot within a 1/4 mi distance
Chick-fil-a would be awesome. Too bad that the intolerant Left controls the City Council.
I used to like the Arby’s at Park-n-Shop, but they left long ago.
Wasnt the burger king over there an Arbys eons ago ?
I remember a Wienerschnitzel before the Burger King.
Maybe they can put another drive thru Starbucks on the corner.
That corner would be perfect for chic-fil-a or in-n-out !
Not sure we need another grocery store…maybe Sprouts or a Trader Joe’s?
Sprouts was suppose to be added to the shopping center across the street, wouldnt be surprised if that becomes their new location…very welcomed addition. Although, I’d prefer a Target since Lucky’s gave them the stiff arm at the Kmart location
What we really need in this area though is a Food Market, where small local food-truck type vendors can share the space and have a community gathering spot to eat. I love this part of concord, but the food choses are either lacking or just corporate fixtures
An In-n-Out will never go there. They only put them in locations that can be seen and easily accessed from the freeway.
@Always
In addition to what I said in a post above, @small change is correct.
At one time, In-n-Out tried to build at Ygnacio Valley and Clayton Road, but the City never negotiated in good faith.
That’s a bummer Staples is moving. Maybe they’ll take over the old Kmart building.
80% chance it’ll be Target.
That would suck if staples left.
For years I’ve heard nothing but complaining about the lack of upgrading and the deteriorating shopping center. Now that’s going to happen for better or worse. It has to be better than what it is now. I like the idea of just three major tenants but not any drive thru. We need a nice sit down restaurant, something like Mona’s or Fiore in the Vineyards shopping center. Leave the little shops to the Little Caesars shopping center across the street. Maybe the Post office can relocate there. The smog shop and it’s owner are the best in the area, where ever they relocate, I will follow. There’s an old gas station at Mendocino and Clayton Rd. Maybe they could get into that place.
I agree with more food options. I wish the food market trends of socal would become more popular out here, like Public Market in Emeryville (best case scenario) or the grocery store turned food market in Castro Valley (minimal expectations). I just found out they doing something similar in downtown san leandro, where i grew up, with Fieldwork Brewing as a flagship tenant. We could use some better beer options closer to Turtle Creek area. Concord Tap House is nice but so much more potential in this area where there are more families and less sit-down communal options
Can Target go here so they don’t have issues with the Lucky at the old K-Mart site!?
Target would make sense, so the City will never approve it.
💋💋 on a Pig. They can rename it too. Maybe Bum Barrio Center or Homeless Homestead Center.
Where will the Olive Garden go?
Where is Olive Garden?
I always wondered how that Staples stayed in business. They never seemed to have much business.
How large is the average Target store? I’m not sure Bel-Air has room for a full-size Target.
The new Target stores are gigantic! But even if you could fit one there, the real problems would be traffic and parking. Like the Starbucks at Clayton and Treat, on steroids.
Cowellian
Since CVS operates the pharmacy in Target stores a Target in that location would work well and if the wall in CVS were taken down one of the big new Targets would fit nicely
I would like to see a Target in this part of Concord.
Please bring a sprouts to that shopping center! I hate having to travel all the way to Walnut Creek to go to one.
Yes, me too. I rarely go to the Sprouts in WC because that parking lot is a nightmare.
Just a polite reminder, anything under $950 will still be fair game.
Have a nice day
Price everything at $951 or higher, with the discount taken at the register?
I remember when there was a Beedees, ( not sure of spelling) liquor store, puppy parlour, barber shop and Luckys in that center. There was a single dirt path where the sidewalks are now and across the street was a Foster Freeze on a dead end court.
Hate to see the PO go! Nice people work there and it is always pretty busy. Going to make the other PO’s really busy now!
thats good I was just saying how ugly and deserted it is although I love Staples
Well, perhaps ol’ Mr. Zimmerman passed away and his kids decided to finally do something with that eyesore.
That shopping center has really deteriorated. If you could walk one end to the other without passing a homeless person it’d be close to amazing. Really sad but it I’m sure it makes a lot of people not even want to go there. Not surprised that Staples will be leaving, I can hardly believe they haven’t left already. You sure don’t have to wait in line when you go there nor search for a good parking spot….it is pretty empty.
.. it’s about time but hate to see the PO go
Is the Casa Correo closing permanently or relocating?
Would love to see a Piggly Wiggly in this shopping center. Or a Lusty Lepoard.
You must have gone to Staples at a different time than we do. Seems like there is always a line. Right now with school supplies it’s really busy. The computer tech Chris has done work on our computers for a few years, he knows his business.
Hope the post office just relocates, it’s very convenient
Sprouts would be good there
Not a Target, never have liked shopping at Target
Ok that’s my 2 cents lol
We NEED TO CONCENTRATE ON CLEANING UP CONCORD. THE HOMELESS POPULATION IS TAKING OVER.
The City and the Police Department need to be alittle more on top of this problem.
Cleaning up this shopping center is a must.
This all should of been addressed years ago!! Many years ago when they were approving all these stip malls down Clayton Road. That were all unnecessary for the community. They are all full of unnessary business. That know one goes to. If they just stuck to the Shopping Centers and put in Homes and condos down Clayton Road. Our town could of been a nice area. The City Planning distrode our Town.
Yes! What is up with all the homeless lately? I’ve lived here for well over a decade and the past half/year or so it has suddenly become so bad. I see the same encampments on the side of the road for months at a time. Why isn’t someone making them move? I literally saw a lady with a tent on the sidewalk for a month and one day saw her taking a dump in the bush, not well hidden, during commute hour right across from BART. What happened to our city?
… not sure if anybody but us will read this but here goes…. a big supermarket there imho won’t make it with a Safeway across the street and a large Lucky down the street…. only if they could persuade Safeway to come over and take that spot then lease / sell the existing Safeway spot to a more specialty market, etc (Hispanic, Asian, etc.). What do others think?
Randy, I agree with you! That particular Safeway needs far more square footage than it has now…. and many more parking spaces!
p.s. on a slant, please, and WAY more handicapped parking spaces.
A Nugget Grocery Store in the Bel Air Center would be awesome. They do very well in the Sacramento area.
