I can’t wait to see this attempt in action at the stores. What is any kind of new bill suppose to do scare them away? Lol
Unless workers are given the ok to break some arms and legs of looters as they exit the doors nothing will change.
I recall back in the late 70s when we caught a thief after he ran out with merchandise we’d beat the living crap out of him or her and get recognition from the bosses for doing it.

hanne jeppesen July 22, 2021 - 10:04 PM - 10:04 PM

Workers should not by any means get involved in stopping a theft. Are you crazy? I work at Macy’s, I’m older, I have a co worker who is 70, others are petit teen agers. However, we are trained to spot suspicious behavior, and alert security, who are trained to deal with it. We can describe the suspect, and security can follow them on their monitor until have enough evidence to detain the supsect/suspects, and they do actually catch a fair amount, especially those who linger in the store and go from department to department and also try clothing on. Grab and run not so much, but it does happen/

nytemuvr July 23, 2021 - 1:25 AM - 1:25 AM

@Bdpirate…..I remember doing that exact thing back in the 70s too. A couple of days after I busted this kid I got off work and as I unlocked my car door I caught a tire iron up side my head from behind. I can still feel the scars inside my mouth as I write this. My days of playing “store detective” were over. From then on I told someone dumber than me and just watched. I found that was just as entertaining, store policy changed not long after that anyway.

MoJo July 22, 2021 - 4:23 PM - 4:23 PM

Another Paper Tiger from the Brylcreem poster child. Terminate proposition 47, let the Police do their jobs, get rid of the District Attorneys that refuse to prosecute, put the Clowns in prison and keep them there.

Cautiously Informed July 23, 2021 - 8:27 PM - 8:27 PM

Awesome. You hit the nail on the head. It could not be said any better.

PESFG July 22, 2021 - 4:25 PM - 4:25 PM

A little too late! Yes, many of us won’t be voting for Newscum to keep his job since the cracking down on this problem should have happened looong time ago. I have witnessed, in at least 3 stores, “customers” walking out with heaps of stuff and nobody could do a thing because criminals have more rights than us law abiding citizens. Once retail stores close for good then our homes will be next. The political solution will be, when we get to that point, to raise taxes even more to supposedly “solve” the problem. Aunt Nancy will make sure her favorite nephew keeps his cushy job though.

Dawg July 22, 2021 - 4:28 PM - 4:28 PM

Is Newsom admitting California has a crime problem? Just the other day, he said there has been a decrease in crime. It doesn’t matter, as long as we have DA’s unwilling to prosecute, and Newsom keeps letting felons out early, all the laws on the books won’t change a thing.

T-rex July 22, 2021 - 11:55 PM - 11:55 PM

Definitely not a decrease in crime. I think people just stop reporting it because police are useless under this current governor and DA. So it only appears there is less.

Chicken Little July 23, 2021 - 7:41 AM - 7:41 AM

When everything is decriminalized, there’s no longer any crime. Brilliant.

I trust Newsom to fix this problem about as well as he investigated why California’s gas prices are so high.

Cautiously Informed July 22, 2021 - 4:31 PM - 4:31 PM

Gavin does all he can to support and encourage criminals by letting them out of prisons and jails, and by softening theft laws. Now he claims he’s concerned and wants to put a stop to retail theft, that in a big way he’s responsible for. The guy is a huge toxic POS.

April July 22, 2021 - 4:48 PM - 4:48 PM

Wrist slaps, all around!

Randy July 22, 2021 - 5:05 PM - 5:05 PM

…. Newsom has already said that he won’t treat them like criminals but rather those in need of drug rehab, homelessness, or other help…. well there goes even more of our tax $$ down the drain… you know some / many will be released early & out doing it again 🙁

Badge1104 July 22, 2021 - 5:22 PM - 5:22 PM

This will not work. He’s just trying to cover the damage he’s done by letting all the criminals out of jail. I’m sure it’s election related to try to keep his job.
Extending the CHP’s duties won’t do a thing as long as all the criminals are let go right away and never punished.
Sorry folks but that’s the truth!
Newsom has become the most blatant and obvious buyer of votes lately. Every move he makes is totally geared to it.

Randy July 23, 2021 - 7:18 AM - 7:18 AM
To Do List July 22, 2021 - 5:33 PM - 5:33 PM

Yes, that speaker was right to use the word culture. The culture has been purposely changed to immediately not challenge such behavior. At the city and time when I was 20, if slimeballs like those shop lifters strolling out with stolen items in a grocery store tried that, a can of chili would have been thrown and knocked out their front teeth. And it would have gotten worse from there. This is the pansy world the progressives have built.

Cellophane July 22, 2021 - 5:33 PM - 5:33 PM

The grease ball needs to sign a bill to allow standard crime enforcement?

Talk about grandstanding.

He needs to let the computers win him the recall election, they’ll do fine.

Otherwise, the grease ball can go pound sand.

Tsa July 22, 2021 - 5:37 PM - 5:37 PM

Window dressing by politicians! NewScum is just primping because of the recall…
They can cite and arrest all they want but they’ll also need to pass a law that mandates DA’s to prosecute these crimes.

The Wizard July 22, 2021 - 6:18 PM - 6:18 PM

A day late and a dollar short, pack you bags dude and get the hell out.

Eric Jolly July 22, 2021 - 6:36 PM - 6:36 PM

Retail theft has always been illegal. This era of lawlessness is all on Gavin and the Democrats. Nothing new makes any difference without prosecutors to pursue crimes that police seek to enforce.

Anonymous July 22, 2021 - 6:38 PM - 6:38 PM

What a joke. “Let’s make new law for crimes already covered by existing law so we look like we’re doing something.”

Want this to stop? Handle it like it was handled in the old days.

momofboys July 22, 2021 - 6:39 PM - 6:39 PM

Strictest punishments, hmm didn’t they lower the punishment for theft as misdemeanor what was it like $1,300, this is what you get. Cough cough people walking out with arms full of merch. And noone stopping them, people recording other breaking into cars instead of trying to stop them. When did all this start happening more🤔🙄. Slap slap on the hand now you are slap slapping themselves in the face.

Mutts July 22, 2021 - 6:48 PM - 6:48 PM

Makes a mess then tries to clean it up, turning himself into a hero.
Kinda transparent.

Aunt Barbara July 22, 2021 - 10:05 PM - 10:05 PM

~❤~

Concord Mom July 23, 2021 - 6:50 AM - 6:50 AM

This…

BWIZZLE July 22, 2021 - 7:47 PM - 7:47 PM

Just in time!
Thanks for nothing, absolutely nothing.
Stop creating the problems in the first place Loser!

Chris July 22, 2021 - 7:53 PM - 7:53 PM

This is so racist! This will hurt the people of color, the marginalized, and especially the equity-challenged members in our society. Next Gavin will demand the police arrest those that break into cars or worse knock elderly Asian women down while stealing their purses.

chuckie the troll July 23, 2021 - 6:39 AM - 6:39 AM

Maybe Gavin could arrest people who pay for their stuff. Would that restore equity? Maybe I shouldn’t have said that. Gavin is so WOKE he might actually try it.

The Fearless Spectator July 22, 2021 - 7:58 PM - 7:58 PM

It appears disorganized retail theft is still acceptable. In other words, go after the middlemen, should there be any, but not the actual thieves.

Gavin just hasn’t discovered the root causes. Let’s put him on the fast track:
Exponential growth of homelessness, unemployment, and inflation leads to exponential growth of theft and violence. Not an especially difficult concept.

Oh, please July 22, 2021 - 8:15 PM - 8:15 PM

Why do we need a bill to follow the law?

Schmee July 22, 2021 - 8:20 PM - 8:20 PM

I honestly dont know what this entails but it feels like a meaningless statement like from mark de saulnier. Either make it a federal crime or don’t bother

Ricardoh July 22, 2021 - 8:23 PM - 8:23 PM

Here is an idea. Free any store of liability for stopping a shoplifter or suspected shoplifter, Shoplifter or customer gets hurt that’s their problem.

chuckie the troll July 23, 2021 - 6:36 AM - 6:36 AM

+2

That old saying about how to get a mule’s attention comes to mind. A serious beat-down requiring screws and plates to repair the damage, does make an impression on people.

Commonsensenor July 22, 2021 - 9:56 PM - 9:56 PM

Stealing is against the law. Enforce the law. Problem solved.

Ilovepopcorn July 23, 2021 - 12:29 AM - 12:29 AM

Stealing is allowed in our state! I do hope they see that and change the rules. So scary and sad for the retail industry. We pay the price too.

Aunt Barbara July 22, 2021 - 10:47 PM - 10:47 PM

First step is to find out how many employees are involved

ConcordRes2 July 23, 2021 - 7:38 AM - 7:38 AM

Another off the wall comment blaming the employees give me a break. If an employee steps in and try’s to stop a thief they are fired. When one store gets hit they put out an emergency notice to all their stores so the managers and employees are on guard. In the case of Pleasant Hill’s Dicks Sporting they noticed the group an officer was in the area parked in front of their car and we had one less gang on the streets for a few hours. Nothing is going to change with the weak laws we have in place and the fact these guys are back out on the street. You didn’t hear anything in Newsom’s plan to add jail time or hold them under the RICO Act. This is just his way of saying hey look at me I am doing something that cost tax payers and does nothing.

hanne jeppesen July 23, 2021 - 9:01 AM - 9:01 AM

Aunt Barbara, You do have a point. Internal stealing is a problem. Macy’s use to hold classes for employee’s with security. They would give us numbers on internal and external stealing, and no doubt internal was a big part of the problem. However, an employee that steals are running quite a risk, security monitor new hires carefully, especially temporary hires, like at Christmas time. Not only do you get terminated, but the employee will have a hard time finding other employment.

Other than a teen ager stealing a candy bar, I just don’t understand the mentality that makes people think they can help themselves to free stuff. I was brought up by parents that barely told a white lie.

Aunt Barbara July 23, 2021 - 11:23 AM - 11:23 AM

I amn also talking about employees that give these organized crime groups inside information, Best hours, when new shipments come in, when managers are off duty, even distract other employees and the list goes on..Everything is just too easy for them with all the social media and texting available today.
Sensor tags don’t work for these creeps, just visible security with tazers or guns.
Anything you buy online these days can be stolen. merchandise.

chuckie the troll July 23, 2021 - 6:34 AM - 6:34 AM

Ever see a train make a U-turn? Neither have I.

The ‘defund-the-police’ movement had consequences. Criminals have shaken off all restraint and self control. They don’t respect authority or fear the police. Restoring peace, law and order is going to require more than a few counsellors and community organizers.

Old-school guy July 23, 2021 - 7:34 AM - 7:34 AM

Release a bus load (or more) of convicts. What could possibly go wrong? Now we know.

Momto6 July 23, 2021 - 9:43 AM - 9:43 AM

Newsom did not create this problem. Voters in CA did when 109 passed then 47 was passed then 57. Created a snowball effect that started with jail overcrowding and demands for reduction of inmates in state prisons. This created overcrowding in county jails. Arrestees were released on OR(own recognizance) then committed new crimes. This has been going on for over a decade in all of CA. Making many felonies misdemeanors (47) exacerbated county jail issue. Not the fault of this governor. AB 1065 was signed by Jerry Brown and Newsom supported it with funding. 331 extends the funding and the laws to combat this crime. I applaud Newsom and the legislature.

Janus July 23, 2021 - 12:36 PM - 12:36 PM

Nice attempt to rewrite history.

A simple search will reveal that
Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom (D)
Sen. Loni Hancock (D-9)
Sen. Mark Leno (D-11)
Sen. Darrell Steinberg (D-6)
Asm. Nancy Skinner (D-15)
San Francisco District Attorney George Gascón (D)
Mary Jane Burke, Marin County Superintendent of Schools
Santa Clara District Attorney Jeff Rosen

All proudly supported Proposition 47 the so called the California Safe Neighborhood and School Act.

A simple search will reveal that

Gov. Jerry Brown (D)
Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom
Sen. Loni Hancock (D-9)
California Democratic Party

All proudly supported Proportion 57, California Parole for Non-Violent Criminals and Juvenile Court Trial Requirements Initiative.

In addition Gov Newsom is responsible for closing 2 of 35 State Prisons even though prison levels have dropped and are no longer over crowded.

Ricardoh July 23, 2021 - 9:55 AM - 9:55 AM

As long as a store owner has a liability problem for stopping shoplifters the problem will continue. The only other thing that would help is change the law to anything over a loaf of bread or a bottle of milk is a felony. Say one year per hundred dollars.

bdml July 23, 2021 - 11:19 AM - 11:19 AM

I have a novel idea how about we just prosecute the crime when it’s committed? Like we used to do…

WC July 23, 2021 - 11:34 AM - 11:34 AM

Look! The professionals are cracking down on the amateurs.

Gittyup July 23, 2021 - 1:07 PM - 1:07 PM

Haha. The professionals recognize competition when they see it.

Rolaids July 23, 2021 - 12:18 PM - 12:18 PM

I can’t pick which post to give dittos to. It seems we all understand the situation. When ill-conceived public policy lowers the disincentive to commit crime, the relative INCENTIVE to commit crime increases. Hopefully this engineered crime wave will be taught in the future as a case study in how NOT to govern.

Jacknife925 July 23, 2021 - 1:49 PM - 1:49 PM

Can’t blame this one on Newscum as much as I would like to!!!!! this is the Voters fault!!!!!!!

California Proposition 47

Result Votes Percentage
Approved Yes 4,238,156 59.61%

No 2,871,943 40.39%

Original G July 23, 2021 - 7:19 PM - 7:19 PM

So desperate to get Prop 47 passed, $10,306,082 was spent to CON voters into voting for it. Much of it spent on carefully crafted, focus group tested advertising. At top of list of state officials supporting Prop 47, then Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom (D). Would be a worse president than, harris is going to be.

CA’s liberal 30 second attention span, low information, shallow thinking voters are more focused on latest day glow crisis, of self absorbed bubble butt’s all documented on their TV show, what’s for dinner and how many signal strength bars their hand held device has.

With their voting record, must not care about conditions their kids will be raising their kids in.

theunforgiven July 23, 2021 - 2:01 PM - 2:01 PM

as I was going to walk into Safeway this guy comes running out and jumps onto his skateboard with a entire bag full of stuff with security chasing him. I wanted to push my cart forward and ram it forward into him like a bowling ball but I wouldn’t doubt that I could be sued if he fell and hit his head or broke a leg so I didn’t but I should have it was the perfect opportunity.

Amy July 23, 2021 - 3:15 PM - 3:15 PM

Just yesterday I noticed 2 homeless tents in the Willow Pass Safeway parking lot and one camped out right by the entrance. How convenient! Just go in, take what you need. Why does Safeway put up with homeless on their property? I won’t shop there anymore. I don’t feel safe shopping there.
