Easy fix: Make it illegal for scrap yards to accept them from non-dealers.

Start prosecuting crime?

Be very cautious when parking in the the Best Buy Parking lot in Pleasant Hill! They are stolen there in broad daylight with people around.

How about you must/shall show a vehicle registration for each converter you attempt to recycle.
I think it was reported a NorCal thief was recycling to a SoCal shop and they had over 2500 receipts. He must be the king of muffler shops.

Hey…maybe start prosecuting the thieves…I know that doesn’t register in the minds of many WOKE D.As

Just so y’all know, especially if you hail from out of state, or aren’t mechanically savvy: In most states, of your catalytic converter gets damaged, stolen, or whatever, you go to a muffler shop, drop a couple hundred bucks for a new one, have them weld you up, and you’re on your way.

In CA, aftermarket Cats are basically illegal unless your car’s manufacturer no longer has the part on their active parts list, regardless of its actual availability.

I had a 2004 heavy-duty vehicle that had the cat stolen from it. The out-of-state insurance company offered us a check for $350 to replace it. I responded to their offer with a $1100 receipt – for the new part only – and a copy of the state law. There was only one left in the state, at a dealer in Roseville. I drove up there on a Friday afternoon and got there 5 minutes before closing to pick it up.

Another tidbit: “They use the platinum to make meth”, said the toothless guy at the Claycord muffler shop that welded it up for me (with some angle iron cheerfully tacked on to the pipe fore and aft to discourage a repeat offense).

Hmm…

CA and New York decided all cats in there state have to be state certified for use in those cars registered in those states. On a smog test there is no difference at all in performance. But it costs us 4 to 5 times the cost to have them replaced, and for what? We are being robbed by the thief’s that took the catalytic converter and then again by our own state that’s ran the cost up of the replacement parts. Absolutely ridiculous.

Dismantle the Catalytic Converter Industrial Complex. Phase them out. If one gets stolen, you can replace it with a straight pipe. Eliminate the crime incentive.

Guess each and everyone of us are on our own these days to protect ourselves, family and property.

Back to the days of the Wild, Wild West thanks to the green group, socialists, leftists and the Dems that have been voted in by the bleeding hearts and entiltement crowd along with the illegals.

You get what you vote for. You have no one to blame but yourselves who casted the votes.

Now that it is hitting your pocket book hurts doesn’t it.

WC---Creeker June 9, 2021 - 9:22 AM - 9:22 AM

Not preventing the ability for people to sell the stolen parts is a form of tax on working families as they need to replace stolen parts from their transportation they need to make a living.. C’mon Dems, step it up! Ops, but if your tough on crime you’ll lose votes….

I had a cat stolen from my ’95 toyota p/u about 15 yrs ago and Toyota wanted about $2100.00 to replace it with their stuff………that was for the cat coverter and about 3 foot of exhaust line and one oxygen sensor.
I went to a muffler shop and they did the job for $550.00 but with a new after market converter that was certified to be sold in Calif.
Works fine and has passed several smog tests with flying colors.

Chicken Little June 9, 2021 - 12:36 PM - 12:36 PM

Unfortunately, the price of California-legal aftermarket cats has skyrocketed in the last couple of years.

Randy June 9, 2021 - 1:56 PM - 1:56 PM

… fueled by the increased value but perpetuated by lack of meaningful prosecution of perps
