Statewide enrollment numbers for K-12 public schools for the 2020-21 school year dropped nearly 3 percent, or 160,000 students, compared to the year before, according to Public Policy Institute of California in a report released Friday.
The figures were similar for Bay Area counties, which had enrollment drops of between 2 and 4 percent.
Before the pandemic the Department of Finance project a decline of about three-tenths of a percent this year. The much steeper than anticipated decline, which is most pronounced in the younger grades, may be due to parents keeping their kids out of school, enrolling them in a private school or homeschooling them.
The number of Black and Native American kindergartners declined the most, by 20 percent and 23 percent, respectively. There also were 11 percent fewer Latino and 3 percent fewer Asian American and Pacific Islander kindergartners. The demographic pattern held across grades but with smaller declines, according to the report.
Enrollment dropped unevenly across the state with enrollment in the rural counties of Mono, Inyo and Sierra counties falling more than 8 percent. Bay Area counties had enrollment drops of between 2 and 4 percent, and Los Angeles and Orange counties had drops of 3 percent.
It’s unclear if the enrollment declines are permanent or whether parents will send kids back to school when classes are fully in-person, according to the report. Migration may also have caused declines as more lower- and middle-income families move out of state.
so what your saying is the mdusd
huge secret of not caring about kids or their education
is reaching people after the sham covid flip flops and bowing to china
showing their real colors
good for parents
great job seeing reality
This should come as no surprise whatsoever. Some parents made the decision to homeschool or go the private school route. Some families just plain left California. And some of the most as-risk, low-achieving students simply disappeared altogether.
Frankly, many California (Kleptofornica) school districts perform so poorly that they should simply be defunded and parents given money to educate their children.
Chuckie nails it. Parents, realizing that the Teacher’s Unionⓒ has zero interest in their children’s education, have migrated to home schooling and private schools. For further proof, see the San Francisco Unified School District plan to have only one class this term to receive their full annual pay. Yeah, sure, children are their priority. Always follow the money.
I completely agree with your comment. I was lucky to find a school for my kindergartener (comes at a hefty monthly price though) while my two older kids had to work online due to private schools being full. I truly hope this school year MDUSD will open up. I’ve had to work during the whole pandemic and have done so safely and now it’s the teachers turn to work. But I knew years ago when I lived out of state for a few years the CA schools suck and how much our state does not put into our schools and how much these schools ask for parents help.
this was predicted with CoVid, folks leaving the State, and Curriculum, Private schools are growing, I was surprised the # was only 3%, some predictions as high as 5%
Wonderful!
Now our property taxes need to drop 3%.
What did they expect with their perverted & sIckening curriculum.
Why must race always be brought in? Does it matter? No. The only thing that matters is the drop and the reason why.
Wholeheartedly agree from a mom with POC kids!

Their actions turned around and took a chunk out of their rear end.
Here’s a good survey question: “when newsom is recalled & replaced by a competent gov, what’s the 1st priority?”
Mine: institute education vouchers
Mine too
Have several coworkers, (we were deemed essential) after seeing what was being presented during remote learning, are seriously considering either private schooling or home schooling. Lock down gave some parents a rare look at what’s presented in CA schools and they didn’t like what they saw. Others have expressed, they are going to be more involved in their children’s education going forward.
I’m glad that they should be more involved. Too many parents thinks the teachers should do everything even when the kids are at home and not it’s back to the parents responsibility. Parents need to be accountable in what their children do.
Were they not involved before? This is the problem today.
Gavin is laughing out loud of how much he’s made kids dumber in the state this past year and screw them out of an education while his kids gets first class education.
The Mdusd needs to show what they did with the COVID money they got.
The school board and other all need to be fired. They are the reason Mdusd employees have poor leadership and the students have poor education. Hold the school board accountable for the money.
leaving the state or school choice? oh wait Democrats don’t support school choice as it would hurt the unions…
Fire all the MDUSD board members that won’t stand for the Pledge of Allegiance. You know who you are. Did you notice Ms. Nzewi didn’t show up for the in person board meeting? She dialed in over the phone…..
I don’t wonder why.
