A two-alarm fire damaged a church in Concord early Thursday morning, a Contra Costa County Fire Protection District official said.
The blaze was reported at 5:32 a.m. at Christ Community Church of the Nazarene at 1650 Ashbury Drive, located near Clayton Road and Galindo Street.
The first arriving crews found heavy flames coming from a two-story building and fought the fire defensively, eventually extinguishing it by about 6:15 a.m. and saving an adjoining one-story building from burning, Assistant Fire Chief Jeff Peter said.
No injuries were reported as a result of the fire, and its cause remains under investigation, Peter said.

Oh no that is terrible!!! I do not smell smoke now. This is very sad!!
I’m in my office in downtown Concord this morning. It is still very smoky here but traffic appears to be moving through the downtown streets.
my guess would be the homeless that hang out at ellis lake started the fire
Chris – the homeless also hang out around that church as well. When I lived in the area I use to go by there when walking. I stopped walking in that area when I was harrassed a couple of times by the homeless.
The homeless do hang out at that church. The Nazarene church has a food pantry on Sat. morning, and meals on Thursday evenings.. Thankfully the one-story building was saved.
no words to express my feelings
That building partially burned in 1973 also. It was an old building that had been moved from Almond Ave. and Grant St. in 1958. It was built in the late 40s and had been remodeled a few times since.
Providing services to homeless druggies attracts homeless druggies. Homeless druggies do homeless druggie things like smoking meth using butane torches and tossing cigarette butts into dry brush.
Red flag weather + discarded butts = fire.
I’ll bet the people at Park Central are relieved.
Homeless. No good deed goes unpunished. This is a cautionary story about how we need to encourage people to help themselves and not feed the bears. They will always turn against you.
I hope the damage was minimal.
Vegas baby
If the homeless who do not want to get cleaned up or get help are contined to be allowed to destruct property at taxpayers expense then shame on elected officials and district attorneys.
This cannot continue to be allowed or go unpunished and ignored. Monies are being wasted daily and our towns continue to be destroyed. Reasonable tax payers are reaching their breaking point.
Wale up folks. Start with voting Newsom out as we can see he is running scared and daily is wasting more a nd more money to protect his dictatorship.
Drought conditions and there are all these suspicious fires happening. Downright creepy. Concord Police need to use drones to patrol for arsonists. Approve their drones.
