Only 34 comments last week?
That’s pathetic!
You people lead boring lives…. I’d have contributed more but I’d have to reveal my secret identity…. I would be too easy to find.

With Interpol, the Guardia di Finanza & KGB looking for me ( and 4 old girlfriends trying to serve me with paternity lawsuits)….. I just can’t risk it.

Looks like no one here. Still sure I’m not first.

Book reports: 1st – 3 in 1; The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,1876; Tom Sayer Abroad, 1894; Tom Sawyer, Detective, 1896, Mark Twain. These have been the most fun to read so far. But preteen boys just are funny. He seemed to use some of his reading to cobble together all kinds adventures and predicaments. Some more far fetched than others. Amazing amount of superstitions too.

2ns – Moses and The Ten Commandments, 1956; Paul Ilton & MacLennan Roberts. Somewhat interesting but they try too hard to fill in Moses from inception to when he comes down with the tablets with the Ten Commandments. Like I said, somewhat interesting – but don’t bother.

Dorothy,

Great that you are such an avid reader, I own a bookstore.

Dorothy May 8, 2021 at 2:23 PM

Jeff, I am trying to read down several bookcases. I’m down to 5 to go. Some books were mine and some were my mom’s. When I find a more recent one I add it in.

You interested in adding old books to your bookstore?

Here’s a test which will make you humble:

Name the 5 Great Lakes of USA in order ….. from the smallest to the largest.

Google check your answers, but please do NOT post them here. Just let us know what kind of grade you would have gotten on a geography quiz.

Ready, set…….

Dawg May 7, 2021 at 11:10 PM

I can name all five, but in order of size, I got two right.

Ancient Mariner May 7, 2021 at 11:45 PM

Hi Antler!
I love the question (and Thank You!), but I have a few of my own:
‘Who decides which lakes are ‘great’?
If you look at a map without borders, there’s a string of lakes from the Great Bear Lake, down through the Great Slave Lake, Lake Athabasca, Lake Winnipeg, to the ‘Great Lakes’. This is a constant, continent-wide low trough. Some people say that Michigan and Huron should be considered one lake with a narrow spot (these are the people who don’t want to admit that Lake Baikal is the biggest). My personal favourite is Lake Saint Claire (okay – it’s small, but I can live with that).
Here’s a link to why Lake saint Claire is ‘Great’:

Kentucky Derby May 8, 2021 at 8:38 AM

I can name all five, and in order of size, I remembered three of them. The other two I guessed, and I guessed correctly. If it was a timed test, the clock probably would’ve ran out…

Silva May 8, 2021 at 1:28 PM

I’m humbled. I’m not posting my grade or I’d be humiliated, too.

Silva May 8, 2021 at 1:45 PM

What a beautiful song, Ancient Marine, thank you. I’ll be listening to more Mustard’s Retreat.

Ancient Mariner May 8, 2021 at 6:42 PM

Glad you enjoyed it, Silva!
I like a lot of their music.
That one’s a cover, though, I think it dates from the 19th century.

Antler May 8, 2021 at 7:24 PM

Ancient Mariner, thanks for adding the music and the wonderful expansion of topic.

Here’s another tidbit:
Lake Michigan is the only Great Lake which lies completely within the United States!

Keep turning in those test scores, y’all. I’ll give it a few days longer before posting the correct answers.

Ancient Mariner May 8, 2021 at 11:44 PM

This was a great question, Antler! Thanks for posting it.
Got all five, but flipped O and E for the two small ones.
So now I know!

Antler May 11, 2021 at 2:06 PM

@ WC Resident ~ Thanks for the heads up on the chain of 60 Starlink satellites! A few of us just went out and watched them fly by. Pretty cool!

Campdakota May 8, 2021 at 8:53 AM

Yes! We went outside at 9:21 & kept our eyes fixed on the sky … suddenly they appeared! Quite a site to see!

Addlepate May 8, 2021 at 6:16 AM

When the homeless guy at the Pavillion first moved in he had a shopping cart and a box or two. Now he has an increased number of boxes, people are dropping things off for him, and it’s becoming a camp site. My concern is someone else is going to move in there. Then more. Then it’ll become an encampment with a dozen homeless. Good luck moving out the blight when there are a few dozen homeless living there. Better to move the one guy out now than a few dozen later.

Question–Willie Mays just turned 90–How much (contract) do you think he would get in today’s market if he was playing in his prime? my guess would be somewhere around $50 million–

RANDOM TASK May 8, 2021 at 9:06 AM

omg i just saw and yes bring on the jokes

this site is not secure

what how is a site not secure through modems and routers in this day and age

appalled

anyways carry on enjoying the day

its warm outside

Ricardoh May 8, 2021 at 9:52 AM

Yesterday a neighbor told my wife that a satellite would fly by at around nine thirty pm. At least that is what I thought I heard. So we went outside at the appropriate time and searched the sky for awhile. Not knowing where it would come from or go to we had to watch all over. After a few minutes in the northern sky I spotted a satellite then I saw another and another in all maybe twenty. It looked like a UFO invasion. If I had just happened to see that without knowing about the satellites I would have thought for sure we were being invaded. They seemed very close to each other so I was thinking, what is weird is no one is up there piloting these things yet the probably won’t bump into each other. It was a strange sight.

It would’ve made for a more interesting night if they rebroadcasted Orson Wellles ‘War of the Worlds!’…

When/why did Health department of Contra Costa stopped reporting Covid statistics??? Any info???

Bob May 8, 2021 at 12:11 PM

Since January 20

WC Resident May 9, 2021 at 9:24 PM

The statistics are still being updated and posted to https://www.coronavirus.cchealth.org/ the way they always have been. The focus of the home page changes with most of it now devoted to the vaccination effort.

You may be thinking of the data dashboards which are still at https://www.coronavirus.cchealth.org/overview

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms and all the ones who fill in for moms. Maybe we also need an Aunt or Cousin day also? Or do we have them and I just don’t know about them?

My younger one sent me a lovey bouquet of balloons attached to a tray of various covered strawberries. I’ve already called to say thank you but didn’t say I was allergic to strawberries. No need to spoil a wonderful thought and remembrance.

Aunt Barbara May 8, 2021 at 12:05 PM

They all know now.. They know where you hangout! 😉

Silva May 8, 2021 at 1:42 PM

How very sweet and nice! It really is the thought that counts, and you are a wise woman to understand.

Silva May 8, 2021 at 1:53 PM

When my son was a boy he spoke in earnest of a “Kid’s Day” for two or three years. Now I don’t remember what the supposed date of it was, and I’ve not heard of it anywhere since, but he had me convinced it was a real thing.

Roz May 8, 2021 at 2:30 PM

Yes,….it will always be called Mother’s Day in my book.
I heard someone, who was ‘politically correct’ on the News, refer to it as ‘Birth Person Day’. No Thank You.
Give a Mom a Hug & Love, and Happy Mother’s Day from the Heart.

Cyn May 8, 2021 at 3:07 PM

Very nice, Roz. Agree wholeheartedly.

Jojo Potato May 8, 2021 at 3:29 PM

Japan has had Children’s day for centuries. Currently May 5. I remember asking my mom about and she said like: “you kids get it everyday”. But she would never had said kids, to her that was baby goats. Us children were much more important than that.

Kentucky Derby May 8, 2021 at 4:47 PM

I was out and about this morning with a friend, and they were pinning flowers on the ladies. I said I prefer to call Mother’s Day “ladies day” to include all the ladies. Mother’s Day can be hard for some. I’m a mom, my elderly mom is still alive but I keep in mind that there are those who really struggle on Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.

That being said… HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!

Silva May 9, 2021 at 9:31 PM

Jojo Potato, Oh thank you. Maybe that was the origin for my kiddo’s presumed “Kids Day”. And since you mentioned it, May 5th is ringing a bell.

Roz, I don’t think the politically correct person you heard advocating for “Birth Person Day” thought that through very well. Even if it weren’t cumbersome and approach politically correct overkill, it leaves adoptive mothers out in the cold!🥶😊

Roz May 10, 2021 at 7:26 AM

Silva~
You know, I didn’t think about that, but you have a darn good point!
Thanks for sharing that thought.

Low-income workers have/are going to miss out on something like 30K of free government money by the end of September, that others are gathering by sitting at home, doing nothing, happy as clams.

Antler May 10, 2021 at 12:35 AM

Mayor, thank you so much for “repairing” the Whatever thread!

Back nearer the beginning of the thread, there is my quiz/game about the Great Lakes. (I was on a research venture because of never having set foot in most of the central northern states…… yeah, well because I dislike being cold, that’s why.) But I have flown into Chicago O’Hare International soooooo many times and been astounded that even at altitude, one couldn’t see the far shore of Lake Michigan (22,300 square miles).

Okay, so here’s a tip: in the quiz, Lake Michigan is #3 ( already told you that it is the ONLY one of the Great Lakes located entirely in the United States.

Ancient Mariner added some super facts and musical fun to the game, too!

Mt Diablo High student’s got in a fight on Friday and one student stabbed another student. Luckily the stabbing wasn’t life threatening.

Dr. Jellyfinger May 10, 2021 at 1:46 PM

The stabbing WAS life threatening…
The resulting wound however, was not.

Picked first Zucchini Squash this morning. Growing in 5 gallon buckets this summer, using wicking tub adaptation. For spacers in bottom of buckets recycled 3 inch perforated pvc drainpipe, one piece 10 inches with one end cut 30 – 40 degrees and two side pieces 3 inches long. Drilled drain hole about 2 inches up side and installed 1/4″ top hat grommet. Angled end of 10″ against side of bucket where grommet is and two 3″ on either side of 10″, protects drain hose coming thru grommet.
Could use black corrugated flexible drain hose, easier to transport in a car than ridged pipe.

Used weed block material from Costco 4′ tall roll which is good enough for this experiment. Cut a piece so it drapes over sides of bucket, don’t make my mistake cuttin’ it too short my first go.
https://youtu.be/9guNoWP8_ls?t=130

Once fabric is down in bucket you’ll have four pockets that go to bottom of bucket, push fabric down so it reaches bottom of bucket. Ya want to make sure potting soil gets down into those pockets.

Plant vegetable plants into buckets and water in. Have to top water sometimes a few times a day until roots make it down to bottom of bucket.

Set buckets up so they’re at same level so drain holes are at same level, used 1/4″ drip irrigation tubing and fittings to connect drain holes together. Thought being could use another bucket with a small float valve to water all buckets, allowing plants to take water as needed. Verdict still out on if it’s gonna work . . . . if nothing else use connected drain lines as common drain. Ya need the drain excess water so there’s an air gap so soil doesn’t stay too wet and putrefy.

Bought top hat grommets at grow store west of Concord lowes. Highway 4 west off ramp, at bottom turn left (instead of right to lowes) Grow Generation hydroponics. The top hat grommets are 30 – 35 cents a piece.

Also bought 8 gauge bare wire at home depot and put it up to attach stings to use for clipping up tomatoes.

Appears as though Whatever thread is frozen again.

Anyway, I’ll try putting the answers to the Great Lakes quiz wayyyyyy back under the original comment and replies.

The next couple of days should be cooler (6-7?). A good time to get some last minute baking done, and frozen.

So now that the CDC has announced that fully vaccinated people can stop wearing masks indoors and out, will California drop the mask requirement?

If not, why not?
