Gov. Newsom Takes Action To End State’s Issuing Of New Fracking Permits By 2024

Gov. Gavin Newsom on announced he has taken action to end the state’s issuing of new permits for fracking by 2024.

Newsom directed the state’s Department of Conservation’s Geologic Energy Management Division (CalGEM) to take regulatory action to stop issuing new permits for hydraulic fracturing — also known as fracking — by January 2024 and also asked the California Air Resources Board to look into ways to phase out oil extraction across the state by 2045.

Newsom last September issued an executive order calling for an end to fracking and to accelerate the state’s transition away from fossil fuels.

“The climate crisis is real, and we continue to see the signs every day,” Newsom said. “As we move to swiftly decarbonize our transportation sector and create a healthier future for our children, I’ve made it clear I don’t see a role for fracking in that future and similarly, believe that California needs to move beyond oil.”

The action was lauded by state legislators who had previously proposed a bill to ban fracking.

State Sens. Scott Wiener, D-San Francisco, and Monique Limon, D-Santa Barbara, thanked the governor for taking action. The pair’s bill, Senate Bill 467, called for a ban on new permits for fracking by 2022 but was voted down earlier this month by the state Senate Natural Resources and Water Committee.

“While we believe an earlier end date is appropriate, at least having a set end date will trigger the long overdue conversation about what a transition away from oil looks like. To date, political paralysis has prevented that conversation from happening. We hope the governor’s action today breaks that political logjam,” the two state senators said.

The environmental groups Greenpeace USA and Center for Biological Diversity said Newsom’s move is significant but that more urgent action is needed.

Dr. Amy Moas, senior climate campaigner at Greenpeace USA, called it “an important first step” but said “it doesn’t do enough to address the increasingly urgent climate and public health crises facing Californians today.”

Kassie Siegel, director of the Center for Biological Diversity’s Climate Law Institute, said, “We don’t have time for studies and delays. Californians living next to these dirty and dangerous drilling operations need protection from oil industry pollution today.”

I guess gasoline/diesel prices aren’t high enough for this moron?

chuckie the troll April 25, 2021 - 12:43 PM - 12:43 PM

THAT moron is wealthy and can afford gas at pretty much any cost. And he owns a pretty nice spread in another state. He has Teflon to spare.

chuckie the troll April 24, 2021 - 1:24 PM - 1:24 PM

I believe that California should be limited to the energy that it can produce within its own borders. Why take these symbolic half-measures? Imagine what that would look like… because the state would be in the dark when the sun goes down.

Anonymous April 24, 2021 - 1:29 PM - 1:29 PM

Newsom is a man-child attempting to garner as much support from the whacko left as possible to thwart his recall.

If maintaining his position requires the destruction of the California economy and bankrupting of our residents, well, that’s a small price to pay to keep our savior in office.

Sorry Newsom, your apotheosis is not forthcoming.

These liberals are deliberately trying to sabotage and hurt America! Gas prices have gone up 90 cents in the last few months! Ouch. And they’re going to go up all the more!
Of course he also has outlawed gas cars in the coming years so we’re all going to have to spend big bucks to buy an electric car, to which there won’t be enough electric power to charge them with for all of us.
I’ve come to think that these Democrats truly hate middle class traditional Americans and our country.

Gebertx April 24, 2021 - 1:54 PM - 1:54 PM

Can you say $6 Gas ? And who does this effect the most, lower income Californians, but they’ll still vote for the incompetent Clown

Oh, please April 24, 2021 - 8:14 PM - 8:14 PM

It doesn’t affect them at all! They get everything free from hard-working folks who made sacrifices to get where they are at, only to be continually stolen from to pay for the incompetent masses. THAT is why these morons keep electing these thieves. They keep getting everything for FREE (to them, it is free…)!

Randy April 24, 2021 - 2:46 PM - 2:46 PM

… so when we have power outages again we won’t have oil powered back-up like last time? We don’t have enough green power yet and don’t think we’ll ever have given the approvals on continued growth without essential infrastructure plans being implemented… ie water

Sick of it April 24, 2021 - 2:54 PM - 2:54 PM

Have to say it. But it’s the one thing he has ever done I like. Sorry but fracking in a geological earthquake state like CA is just flat out stupid. But I still hate him with a passion no matter what. He should have never made it any higher than holding office in SF

John April 24, 2021 - 2:56 PM - 2:56 PM

Wow, No one is better than Newsom at driving jobs away

Assemblyman Kevin Kiley provided this quote yesterday:

“We simply don’t have the authority” Newsom said last September regarding fracking permits. However he doesn’t worry about legal details with a recall approaching.

And this woman who says, “We don’t have time for studies or delays” is really scary. Good thing she doesn’t have anything to do with things that can explode.

Scott Wiener and Gavin always endorsed each other.

I wonder how Wiener feels about Jenner?

Gittyup April 24, 2021 - 3:37 PM - 3:37 PM

While this isn’t the worst thing he’s done since taking office, Newsom visited a scourge on San Francisco that he is actually proud of, and he thinks his election to Governor gave him a mandate to do the same for the whole state. But it doesn’t stop there. He has eyes on the Presidency.. One shudders to think what he could do to the entire nation. It’s his version of “death by a thousand cuts,” driving gas prices up and further injuring the consumers of California. The wreckage he leaves in his wake is legendary..

chuckie the troll April 25, 2021 - 12:46 PM - 12:46 PM

I’m fairly certain that Newsom, Cuomo and Whitmer are now unelectable in a free and fair Presidential election. But with the Biden bin Lyin Administration in office, we are already getting the Ginsu Knife treatment.

Tsa April 24, 2021 - 4:20 PM - 4:20 PM

Will CA and the US be ready impending tsunami of EV battery discards when those things start dying off? 250,000 tons of waste annually will creat quite a problem in the near future. Replacing one problem with another without a long term solution sounds like a plan for failure. Current solutions using acids for smelting or burning them using fossil fuels really don’t seem viable.

The Fearless Spectator April 24, 2021 - 5:16 PM - 5:16 PM

As a side note, Lithium Carbonate has doubled in price year to date. That combined with Biden inflation is going to make those electric cars expensive indeed. The alternative energy cart is so far ahead of the horse it may actually lap it……at least once…….

Dr. Jellyfinger April 25, 2021 - 7:13 AM - 7:13 AM

Simple…. we just ship our lithium waste off to other countries that have weak environmental laws.

They dump it wherever, probably in the ocean.

Yes, electric cars are saving the Earth!

Pete V. April 26, 2021 - 5:29 AM - 5:29 AM

Consider the fact the leftist running (ruining) this state and nation—in regards to the rare earth materials necessary for their “electric everything “green” wet dream—are voluntarily settling us up to be dependent upon CHINA for these materials.

We were MUCH better off being dependent upon Middle East oil…which, in case anyone forgot, Orange Man Bad eliminated that dependency by pushing us to energy independence. But he did tweet mean things so TOTALLY worth having a dementia-addled “President” with crackhead/sexual deviant kids and being China’s b***h instead.

Hayden Barsotti April 25, 2021 - 8:38 AM - 8:38 AM

I agree. People in this state keep voting for this BS so let them reap the “rewards” by the continued mindset. No one ever puts in a “what if this happens” at the time when these decisions are made.

Does the legislature do anything, other than draw a paycheck, these days?
Or do we rule/govern by executive order.

What kind of banana republic features one dude saying, “I don’t think there’s a future for this whole type of energy production” and bypassing the legislature without any shame or subterfuge?? This is the legislatures’ domain, not his. Anybody with that much shamelessness about separation of powers needs to be out STAT.

Tired Californian April 25, 2021 - 7:51 PM - 7:51 PM

Why doesn’t Newsom knock down gas prices? I still don’t see why they raised taxes on fuel when none of our streets look fixed. He should be figuring out how to reverse the taxes implemented on us and forcing everyone out of California!

Huskerfan April 26, 2021 - 8:53 AM - 8:53 AM

I sure hope Newson doesn’t get re-elected. He has already ruined the state worse than Brown did. What a disaster.

Justifiable languor April 26, 2021 - 3:05 PM - 3:05 PM

It is an over population problem, El Stupid-som. Meanwhile, inviting sick, pregnant and gangsters into our state. Robbing Californians of their safety, tax dollars and future. Recall!

Whoe Jim April 26, 2021 - 6:33 PM - 6:33 PM

Nice to read the majority of people on Claycord can see thru Nonsensical Newsom. His Presidential fantasies are fading fast. The recall election is now official. His political consultants won’t help him this time. We can only hope people don’t forget his many failures as Governor when the fall election for his replacement takes place. Californians not only deserves, but needs that change….
