The Claycord Online Museum – “Net Day ’96” with Clinton & Gore at YVHS

This is a ticket stub from “Net Day ’96”, which was an event that kicked off a drive to connect California public schools to the internet, 25 years ago this year.

On March 9, 1996, President Bill Clinton and Vice-President Al Gore visited Ygnacio Valley High School in Concord, and spoke to the crowd.

Did anybody out there go to the event?

I didn’t go to the event; however, I did line up on the sidewalk along Treat and Oak Grove (along with my two kids) to get a glimpse of the motorcade, etc. I have really been enjoying the “Online Museum” lately between Tower Records, Sun Valley’s Ice Skating Rink, etc. Brings back wonderful memories!

Yes! I went with my mom and dad as a little 4th grader. We have pictures somewhere of President Clinton giving his speech. I remember I could barely see with the huge crowd there and there was a lot of just standing around waiting for them to speak, but it was very exciting at the time.

Wow, I remember that event.

I didn’t go, I was working.

That must have been just after Al Gore invented the internet. And I’m guessing by looking at that photo that union electricians were apoplectic over those two doing their work (while wearing Dockers, yet).

Not much IT improvement at MDUSD since then.

I was in the group that got to rip out what Clinton/Gore did because they put in the wrong colors of wires because they wanted a red/white/blue combination of wires for the photos (instead of the the correct color coded set for the network runs)… Yup, they did one hall, took pictures and peaced out.

Still have my ticket.

Oh, please April 13, 2021 - 8:20 PM - 8:20 PM

Now I wish they never did connect to the internet! It has resulted in teachers not teaching and kids not learning. Fabulous.

My kids were there. The plaque where they signed is in my wife’s office at the school.

My son was a student and attended the event. He shook hands with the President and Vice President. He has grown up to be a staunch conservative!

Even though I did not vote for Clinton boy have things gone down the crapper since then. Thought they were bad we had not seen anything like we are experiencing with the politicians in office now.

I only remember Bill playing golf at the Orinda Country Club afterwards.

Hey, I remember the inventor of the internet. What happened to him?

Retired YV teacher April 14, 2021 - 2:55 PM - 2:55 PM

I was the band director at Ygnacio Valley at the time. The YV Marching Band played before the program started, and we played “Hail To The Chief” when Clinton was introduced. After the program, Clinton and Gore came over and shook hands with the band members and visited with them for a few minutes. It was a very cool experience.

II attended this event with two of my children and a neighbor. We arrived very early and stood in the fourth row from the podium. After their presentation Presidant Clinton reached over the protective barrier to shake hands with the crowd in the first row. That action caused a powerful surge from the crowd at the back of the very packed quad hoping to also touch the President. We found ourselves lifted off of the ground unable to move. Finally the linebacker sized gentleman to my right pushed through the frenzied assembly with us in tow. I suffer from claustrophobia to this day.

We sat on a grassy knoll near Genova on Treat Blvd. and marveled at the endless stream of vehicles and the motorcycle cops racing back and forth. Pretty impressive.
