This photo has been posted in the past on Claycord, but we’re posting again because it’s so great.

The picture came from a Claycordian named Chuck Reeves.

Chuck wrote the following message….

Some time ago I sent you some old pictures of the A&W on Market Street in Concord. Ray & Lucy Zodrow (My brother & sister in laws) co-owners of the drive-in on Clayton Road found a couple of old Polaroid pictures. They are sort of faded but perhaps you can use them. People who used to patronize the A&W there will remember Ray & Lucy as they operated that store.

Chuck also owned the A&W on Market Street in Concord.

The top photo came from Chuck, and shows what the building used to look like when it was an A&W. The bottom photo is from Google Maps, and shows how it looks now, as the Hunan Chinese Restaurant.

Beautiful.

There was nothing better than a frosty mug
of A&W root beer on a hot summer day.
You could join their 10 gallon club. Every
time you bought a gallon jug of root beer and
brought it back for a refill you’d get a coupon.
After 10 gallons you’d get one free. I also recall
the Frank Victor Shell gas station on the corner
close by.

Root beer floats were to die for.

Shoulda Coulda, I didn’t learn about the gallon jugs of root beer till late in the game, I think I was about 18 by then. There was only my mom and me at home, but they were still wonderfully delicious after they were completely flat!!

Great, now I want a root beer float.

I remember the root beer freeze and orange freeze. Right behind them you could play miniature golf.

Chuckstir, your thinking of the A&W on clayton rd. I remember my Dad becoming a total stressed out mess whenever we would eat at A&Ws. What with the food trays on the window and us kids eating burgers in the backseat. Still makes me laugh to this day.

Used to ride my bike from the Northgate area to the mini golf place for a day of fun. We would always eat lunch at that A&W. Love the Teen Burger.
