Who remembers Winchell’s Donut House?
They had locations all over Claycord, including this one pictured above in the Countrywood Shopping Center on Bancroft and Treat in Walnut Creek. Other locations included Clayton Rd. in Concord and Contra Costa Blvd. in Pleasant Hill.
Despite no longer being a presence in Contra Costa County, Winchell’s is still in business. They have over 170 locations nationwide.

I remember a Winchell’s in Pleasant Hill but not in Countrywood.
There used to be one on Oak Park Blvd in Pleasant Hill. Attached to the Safeway store, torn down years ago.
I grew up eating Winchell’s donuts and have forever thought they are the best ones around! There was one in Sunnyvale next to the grocery store so every Saturday morning after doing the weekly shopping, we’d make a pit stop to get a dozen…loved the chocolate dipped and apple fritters!
Winchell’s was a great place for a hot cup
of coffee and a fresh donut. Use to go to
the one on Oak Park Blvd. in Pleasant Hill
near where the Safeway is now. Also to the
store on Contra Costa Blvd. near Casper’s.
They opened early and stayed open late.
Can’t recall if they were open 24/7. The
Winchells sign in the photo in Countrywood
was left up long after the store closed and a
new donut shop opened. It was still attracting
people who wanted a donut.
used to love Winchell’s. Every Sunday morning mom got us Winchell’s.
I used to stop at the Countrywood location every morning on my way to work for coffee (no donut) in the 80s. There is still a donut shop in that location.
Great memories from my childhood, the Winchell’s near Casper’s on Contra Costa Blvd. My Dad took there (on the way to work) a couple times per week for a donut and hot chocolate, before dropping me off at school.
Remember it well! Now Allstar Donuts, I’m there every Saturday morning with the kids after sports. How are ya Mayor! I’m still around old pal. Keep up the good work, cheers!
Am I the only person that thinks all donuts taste the same? I’ve never bought a donut from a shop and thought wow this is a bad doughnut
I recall that Allstar, now in Countrywood, was before their move there was located on Clayton Rd in the same location that for some time after the move was occupied by a Winchells. This location now is a burger joint.
Grew up going to the one in Countywood. The donuts were great.
Clearly many citizens of Claycord consider donut shops to be holy places.
Fat pills to go!!!
… used to frequent the one on Bancroft as well… nothing compares to their apple fritters as others noted
