F January 22, 2021 - 9:30 PM - 9:30 PM

What did the suspect look like? I live in the complex wondering which neighbor it was

Jay Roller January 24, 2021 - 8:22 AM - 8:22 AM

Unless they were white, it’s racist to ask what the suspect looks like! Thank you for your cooperation!

Sad…..just sad. I remember when concord was a decent place to live. Now it’s just another antioch.

Dawg January 23, 2021 - 1:17 AM - 1:17 AM

Oh, please January 23, 2021 - 9:22 AM - 9:22 AM

Thank a liberal.

Sure sounds like a liberal infection extending itself as expected.

remember January 23, 2021 - 7:00 AM - 7:00 AM

when people are told the American dream is dead what else can they do but try and escape the misery that the left and the dems create with their lies. the result is always the same, frustration in feeling helpless and anger which always ends up with someone getting hurt. this is the legacy of the left and the dems.

Dr. Jellyfinger January 23, 2021 - 7:16 AM - 7:16 AM

Now is a time of great decision
Are we to stay or up and quit?
There’s no avoiding this conclusion
Our town is turning into sh*t

Hayden Barsotti January 23, 2021 - 7:41 AM - 7:41 AM

Concord…”Where families come first.” Might want to change it to
“Where gangs come first.”

Not so January 23, 2021 - 8:33 AM - 8:33 AM

How is this a liberal thing? Sounds more like a gun problem. Get it, Sherlock? Shooting = gun. Derrrrr. Not that complicated. Not about liberal. Guns = bad. Hooked on Phonix stuff right here.

Chicken Little January 23, 2021 - 9:59 AM - 9:59 AM

Yeah, right. So stabbings are a knife problem? DUIs are a car problem? Homelessness is a tent problem? Blaming guns for crime is nothing but another way to further a liberal gun control agenda. So, yes. It is most definitely a liberal thing?

Well Folks January 23, 2021 - 10:26 AM - 10:26 AM

Got that right Not so. It has everything to do with the gun culture of this country. America is a violent country because everyone thinks that firing a gun solves problems. This mentality has been around since the beginning of the country and got on a major violent roll after the Civil War and continues to escalate.

Same January 23, 2021 - 11:39 AM - 11:39 AM

Liberals tend to be soft on the bad people holding the guns used in crimes.

Leeland January 23, 2021 - 1:29 PM - 1:29 PM

Well said Chicken Lttle

Oh, please January 24, 2021 - 11:42 AM - 11:42 AM

This is the most ridiculous comment I have ever read. I didn’t think there were actual people out there like this. We learn something every day. How scary that guns are rooming the streets just picking people off! Those guns just go about wildly firing themselves! Oh, my!

Jeff January 25, 2021 - 7:49 AM - 7:49 AM

I owned guns for 41 years, pointed them at people many times and still haven’t shot anyone, how could the guns be the problem?

jjshawk January 27, 2021 - 12:25 AM - 12:25 AM

Well Folks and Not so

There are no “gun problems”, but only people problems. Guns are tools with no will of their own.

Gun Culture is not the problem; for, it’s filled with responsible people who are aware of the legal issues, should they misuse their guns. Not everyone thinks firing a gun solves problems. America, with or without guns, is a violent country and that will never change. Innocent people have the right to defend themselves.

People should learn the following: First, to have respect for life itself. Second, to have respect for “That” which could take a life. The world could be a better place.

Jimmy January 23, 2021 - 9:24 AM - 9:24 AM

12 homicides in Oakland so far this year. Last year at this time there was one. Talk about stupid. Shooting doesn’t eliminate the problem it creates more problems.

Crazytech58 January 23, 2021 - 9:29 AM - 9:29 AM

You’re right concord mom, I’ll walk the streets of concord at night over walking the streets of oakland……

Chris January 23, 2021 - 10:25 AM - 10:25 AM

The young bloods in many cases do not know how to communicate or use their fists anymore. When they can buy a gun easier than cigarettes at the local stop and steal, you know there is a problem. The lockdowns and useless stay at home nonsense just escalates many problems in the homes.

jjshawk January 26, 2021 - 10:54 PM - 10:54 PM

It’s not that easy to buy a gun from a local shop, you have to:
Fill out ATF form 4473
Pass a background check (no felonies, no domestic violence convictions)

Most of the losers who commit these crimes would never make the grade, and the FFL dealers don’t want to be held responsible, so they dot their “i’s” and cross the”t’s”, refuse to sell if necessary.

double dzzz January 23, 2021 - 10:39 AM - 10:39 AM

For people who grew up here in the 60s and 70s. yeah it has gotten way worse with the bad element here. for instance low income housing, illegal residents, over crowded living units. your city is what you make it and look whos in charge of making the rules. just keep handing out the freebies.

Cyn January 23, 2021 - 10:57 AM - 10:57 AM

@Dr. Jellyfinger
Thanks for the laugh. Love BS.

Lars Anderson January 23, 2021 - 11:12 AM - 11:12 AM

Concord had two murders last year, I don’t know how anybody can argue Concord is morphing into Oakland. Oakland had 101 murders in 2020. Concord has average 3 murders per years for the last 15 years or so. Concord is a safe city, always has been. I know, I have lived in Concord for 70 years..
Concord spends 56% of the city budget on policing, no other bay area city comes even close to that. Walnut Creek spends just 28% of the city budget on policing. Concord is awash in police officers, I see 5 or 6 units rolling by every time I walk my dog.
So it doesn’t surprise me Concord PD had 20 police cars on the scene because some guy shot a gun off, The patrolman, who average 160,000 a year, need something to do. Because we have so little serious crime in Concord when an event like this happens everybody over at the PD get’s all excited.
I think the fact you got 20 cars investigated this incident just underscores the waste going on over at the PD. All this money being spent on the PD in Concord is not justified. Officers are being overpaid, the department is also featherbedded with all these managers too, Dispatchers in Concord make more than sworn officers in Clayton!
We can thank our pathetic city council for this. Many of the Concord council members are stooges for the Concord PD labor union, to the point that Concord POA officials order them around like 5 year old’s.
In Concord the PD completely controls the budgetary process. PD officials demand – and get from out council – ridiculously high wages and benefit packages, the latest crime fighting equipment, 100,000 patrol vehicles (the department just bought 16 units, the units have every possible high tech toy you can dream up!). Also, the department is housed in this Taj Mahal PD station, the only decent public building we have in Concord, other than the senior citizen center.
Because all this money has been pouring into the PD – year after year – our city has morphed into nothing more than a gigantic police department. The department is so overstaffed they have to dream up work for the officers to do now.
Our city manager, I should mention, used to work in Walnut Creek, as I understand it. Apparently she never noticed when she worked in WC that it’s possible to ;police a city without using up the whole city budget, as Concord does.

Cellophane January 23, 2021 - 4:25 PM - 4:25 PM

I wonder if it has ever occurred to Lars that having the best police force in the County is the only reason why there are so few crimes in Concord?

The cost of a top-notch Police Department is cheap when it comes to the cost of lives lost.

Comparing Concord to Oakland or Walnut Creek is not a reasonable comparison on any level. Only a fool would accept such nonsense.

I’ll gladly pay more money for the well trained and disciplined police department that keeps the good people of this city safe.

little rant January 23, 2021 - 9:50 PM - 9:50 PM

maybe there were a lot of cars because CPD staffs more at higher crime times….like friday and saturday nites…As for the pay you may want to think about this…..with the mentality of the public and the defund the police, taking away tools, the DAs office going soft on crime, and so many other police reform issues tha the city is going to have to pay more to even entice potential officers to even want to be a cop, much less come to Concord….And then I wont even mention the quality that you are going to get because your candidate pool has shrunk so much…..

Jeff January 25, 2021 - 7:52 AM - 7:52 AM

The base salary for CPD is not $160,000, some may earn that by working overtime or you might be including fringe benefits. As per vehicles, I was shocked to see CPD still driving Crown Vics, those are now ancient………….your facts are wrong.

Hanne Jeppesen January 23, 2021 - 11:23 AM - 11:23 AM

If it was a domestic incident I don’t see it being political. There are many incidents of domestic violence in high income areas, Orinda, Palo Alto, Menlo Park etc.

Jessica January 23, 2021 - 11:31 AM - 11:31 AM

Look up the crime rates for Concord. Hardly an increase, statistically. You all are mistaking population increase for an increase in crime per capita. It’s WAY down from the early 2000s. Get a grip.

Annie January 23, 2021 - 1:54 PM - 1:54 PM

I don’t think very many people have a scanner in Concord. The police seem to be very busy.

cde January 23, 2021 - 4:21 PM - 4:21 PM

want to know the quality of concord? just visit one of their fine high schools.
this shooting wasnt that big of a deal honestly. but concord has some serious problems and wont recover for at least another 30

Pat January 23, 2021 - 10:26 PM - 10:26 PM

Heck, also visit the middle schools when they’re back in… you’ll be shocked and appalled.

Two Wheeler January 24, 2021 - 7:17 AM - 7:17 AM

Oh Barbara, the PD does a great job, but the problem is it is tough to recruit when the idiot captains and chief are total buffoons. There is no leadership there at all. But I am sure with your vast knowledge, they would hire you. Heck, you could even train the new cops.

Gittyup January 24, 2021 - 9:02 AM - 9:02 AM

@Concord Mom I lived several years in Oakland at two different locations. In Oakland, nobody every came into my house in the dark of night and hit me in the face while I slept as they have here. Concord and Clayton have become WORSE than Oakland.

American Citizen January 24, 2021 - 11:26 AM - 11:26 AM

Oakland Paramedic here. Retired. Worked for Allied Ambulance in the 80s and Regional in the 90s in Oakland. Concord is not quite Oakland yet. It’s on the way though. Just wait a few more years and keep building affordable housing. That will complete the transformation.

Concord mom January 24, 2021 - 1:28 PM - 1:28 PM

@gittyup, I’m going to assume you were in Rockridge or Piedmont. You certainly didn’t live in West, East or Downtown Oakland. The worst neighborhoods in Concord don’t even come close to comparing to those neighborhoods.

Jeff January 25, 2021 - 7:46 AM - 7:46 AM

Aunt Barbara,

WCPD should not be training young cops. Not enough serious incidents happen to adequately train someone within five years. WCPD used to hire only the best laterals from other departments when they paid significantly higher salaries, this in no longer the case.

I was trained at an inner city station, I know better than anyone alive.
