Contra Costa County Fire Protection District crews are responding late Monday morning to a residential fire in Walnut Creek, a fire captain said.
The blaze was reported shortly before 11:20 a.m. on Harmony Lane, located off of Larkey Lane near Geary Road.
Firefighters responded and were still working to extinguish the fire as of shortly after 11:30 a.m., Fire Capt. Tracie Dutter said.
No injuries have been reported in connection with the blaze, Dutter said.
We are down the street. Lots of popping sounds. Neighbor said it was ammo going off.
We live a few blocks north of Harmony Lane. We were leaving to walk dogs just after the fire started. As luck would have it, Station #2 on Geary and Dorothy was out on a call. Huge plume of white smoke, then it turned dark gray with mass of bright orange flames shooting 2 stories up in the air. Fire appeared to burning very hot. Could hear explosions; later learned it was ammunition exploding.
About 5 stations responded, coming from the east on Geary and the north on Buena Vista. Also a con fire command truck and at least 2 ambulances. Good samaritans went door to door (before fire engines arrived) to the homes on Oakbrook Lane that abuts Harmony immediately to the north to warn occupants.
The other issue is the 6 new homes being built at the intersection of Larkey Ln and Harmony. The two at Harmony are partially built. One (a 2 story) is wood framing and wood siding exposed and the other only wood framing. No knowledge if they or any other homes were damaged.
Correction to prior post: Fire engines cane from the south on Buena Vista, not north.
