California Dept. Of Public Health Recommending Health Care Providers Pause Administration Of Single Lot Of Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine

California State Epidemiologist Dr. Erica S. Pan issued the following statement today recommending providers pause the administration of lot 41L20A of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine due to possible allergic reactions that are under investigation.

“Our goal is to provide the COVID vaccine safely, swiftly and equitably,” said Dr. Pan. “A higher-than-usual number of possible allergic reactions were reported with a specific lot of Moderna vaccine administered at one community vaccination clinic. Fewer than 10 individuals required medical attention over the span of 24 hours. Out of an extreme abundance of caution and also recognizing the extremely limited supply of vaccine, we are recommending that providers use other available vaccine inventory and pause the administration of vaccines from Moderna Lot 041L20A until the investigation by the CDC, FDA, Moderna and the state is complete. We will provide an update as we learn more.”

All appeared to be experiencing a possible severe allergic reaction during the standard observation period – a type of adverse event that the CDC reports some people have experienced when receiving a COVID-19 vaccine.

While no vaccine or medical procedure is without risk, the risk of a serious adverse reaction is very small. While less data exists on adverse reactions related to the Moderna vaccine, a similar vaccine shows that the expected rate of anaphylaxis is approximately 1 in 100,000.

More than 330,000 doses from this lot have been distributed to 287 providers across the state. The shipments arrived in California between Jan. 5 and 12. The state has not been notified of any other cluster or individual events related to this lot.

The manufacturer, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are reviewing the lot and related medical information.

After taking the vaccine, fewer than 10 individuals required medical attention. So by the county’s own definition (3 or more cases), there is an outbreak of adverse reactions to the vaccine.

Where’s the daily ticker and stats for all those that experienced side effects, got sick or died from the vaccine?

Does anyone still think Big Pharma should have legal immunity?

Oh, please January 18, 2021 - 7:22 PM - 7:22 PM

I thought they were using 1 or more people in a LTF as an outbreak? But, yeah! Lol. I like using their rigged numbers against them 🙂

There’s 8 different blood types, please tell me How a vaccine can be a one-size-fits-all???

There’s not even a one-size-fits-all diet.

Think about that while you’re wearing your Tinfoil Masks.

remember January 18, 2021 - 4:52 PM - 4:52 PM

ahhhh, the season flu vaccine is one size fits all…

doh! sciencing is hard

The Observer January 18, 2021 - 5:21 PM - 5:21 PM

There’s no indication that the vaccine effectiveness varies with blood type. Unless you are a Klingon.

Oh, please January 18, 2021 - 7:24 PM - 7:24 PM

Observer- Well, the say the severity of the COVID illness can vary by blood type. Do we really know it is or is not true that the vaccine could vary in effectiveness? Also, the flu vaccine has historically been fairly ineffective, so that is not the best argument, perhaps?

Covid 98% survival rate Vaccine 95% affected hmmm don’t see the logic here!

The Observer January 18, 2021 - 5:13 PM - 5:13 PM

The 95% effectiveness of the vaccines compares a group of people vaccinated with a similar group of people who weren’t vaccinated. Far fewer people who have been fully vaccinated with both shots have been infected with the virus. In other words, a 95% reduction. The survival rate only looks at the percentage of people who were infected and were able to live through it.

Correction, shows numbers who tested positive.

Most people who get covid has low/no symptoms and will never take a test. The survival rate is actually higher than the 99%+ implies since most will never get a test or go to a hospital.

ZZ January 18, 2021 - 3:56 PM - 3:56 PM

While no virus of any sort is without risk, the risk of a serious adverse reaction or death is very small.

Parent January 18, 2021 - 4:41 PM - 4:41 PM

So the FDA is not questioning it … just some Newscum paid bureaucrat? Is this just an excuse to further slow down the distribution of the vaccine? Or an attempt to discredit Trump (like he needs more help)? Or a way to distract the general public?

anon January 18, 2021 - 10:16 PM - 10:16 PM

Maybe they’re selling the vaccine to the highest bidder and/or friends/VIPs, and this is a cover up for all those missing doses.

If it makes anyone sleep better at night, everyone I know, including close family, has had the bug, tested positive, and recovered. Only flu like symptoms plus no smell/taste. Your milage may vary. Also to add, several of us have the “Covid Awareness App” or whatever it’s called, that is supposed to alert you if you’re near someone that tested positive. Didn’t work for any of our phones, and yes, we all made sure it was enabled. Lastly, if you have diabetes, or are elderly or obese, or Latino, you are at a higher risk. This comes directly from several ER nurses in our family, so take it for what it’s worth. Oh, yah, none of us are even remotely entertaining getting the Covid Cocktail (except the nurses, they have no choice, and all are expressing fear and concerns)

Oh, please January 18, 2021 - 7:28 PM - 7:28 PM

Well, it is a nice sentiment. But, you cannot make hysterical people sleep better at night. Their fears are so largely unfounded that no amount of rationality, actual science or first hand experience will quell this for them. They will only listen to their dictators.

anon January 18, 2021 - 10:15 PM - 10:15 PM

Really anyone but ethnic Han chinese are at a higher risk, as the disease was tailored to damage the Han the least.

Mika January 18, 2021 - 8:29 PM - 8:29 PM

The vaccine doesn’t prevent you from getting Covid. It may help you if you get it, but you can still get it. It may help your body fight Covid. “May”? I’ll take my chances and wait until they develop a proper vaccine. Maybe.

Kauai Mike January 19, 2021 - 6:34 AM - 6:34 AM

I don’t wanna get the virus while so close to a cure but will wait for the kinks to get worked out…
