Witnesses saw a man and a woman wearing waders and searching for mussels get swept from the rocks into the ocean at Pescadero State Beach around 3:15 p.m. Sunday, said a San Mateo County Fire Department spokesperson.
A witness was able to get down to the water and pull the man out of the waves but reported the woman was too far to reach, said San Mateo County Fire Department Public Information Officer Cecile Juliette.
When firefighters arrived, the woman was about 20 yards out, and then she went under.
The man was rushed to a nearby hospital in a ground ambulance, Juliette said. U.S. Coast Guard helicopters were searching for the missing woman. The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Department, California State Parks, Coastside Fire Protection District, La Honda Fire Department and American Medical Response San Mateo County were also on the scene.
The area is currently under a High Surf Advisory.
Oh no! Praying to god they were able to find her!
Yikes. I don’t think it was the best time to look for mussels out there.
Poor woman, what a horrible way to go.
How many times to people have to be warned about these dangers? It also risk the lives of the folks who try to save them. Not to be crass but these folks should be charged for the rescue efforts.
Wearing waders at the beach with unpredictable high tides and waves. The waders fill up you are out of here. I wonder if they speak English or read the news.
They should have read claycord.com before going to the beach. But my guess is that they would or did ignore warnings about high surf.
Warnings regarding the high surf advisory were everywhere! Don’t ever think you are invincible!
Sad,but totally preventable. There was no escaping the warnings. Natural selection at work.
