Mel’s Diner on Treat Blvd. in Concord (just south of Clayton Rd.) has permanently closed, according to its corporate website.

The Concord location opened in September of 2016.

The Walnut Creek Mel’s Diner is still open, and has no plans to close in the near future, according to employees.

Before Mel’s Diner, the building on Treat Blvd. housed CoCo’s restaurant and Bob’s Big Boy.

Thanks to MattfromConcord for the news-tip.

ouch!
that’s close to home.
hurts.

.
Another business covided.
.
Thanks Gavin.

Not Gavin’s fault, blame the idiots that don’t know how to be safe (I.e. mask, sanitize, meet in close groups, etc). We’d be through all this if people would be safe (and don’t even get me started on 45’s denial of COVID which made this worse)

That;s good comedy Jazzman, your cynicism makes you almost sound serious.
I laughed out loud.
Thanks.

@JazzMan… You’re absolutely correct! I throw my “Jazz Hands” up to you. BTW…just in….you have to change your username to “Jazz Person” now, be a good little lemming.

The spread of the virus got worse after June 1. — what happened then–protests everywhere and rioting.. We’ve been wearing masks since March, if masks worked? Social distancing since then too.. The protests and rioting couldn’t have helped but no liberal ever said those should stop .Businesses close since March, only thing that did is close too many. I will miss Mels.

@Jazz.
I have no clue what rock you’ve been hiding under but I have failed to see these mass groups that are not wearing masks spreading this virus around as you claim. Everywhere I go people are masked. Everywhere and in every place. Heck people are jogging and riding bikes wearing masks. Maybe it’s time to accept that masks are not the cure all and maybe the mask makes people feel safe and take more risks. There are plenty of studies pre covid that talked about masks and influenza transmission. I’d suggest you educate yourself.

California has some of the strictest covid policies and yet it has done nothing. Just like Chicago has some of the strictest gun laws yet multiple people are shot daily.

Stop blaming others and accept that maybe what you’ve been told works does not. They have no idea how to fix this. Remember. 3 weeks to flatten the curve.. 9 months later……

@JazzMan keep on listing to CNN and the lying libs. Other states are open and doing better then Commifonia.

Actually, it just has NEVER been a very good restaurant.

Sad to see another restaurant go down.

A sad day indeed. Another victim of Gavin Newsome’s war against California businesses. All over the country, outdoor dining is allowed, and in many states indoor dining is continuing. California is a laughing stock. People and businesses fleeing.

Not satisfied with trashing the state economy, Newsome is also failing to vaccinate the population. Less than !/3 of the vaccine supply we have on hand has been used. It will soon spoil while older people who are literally dying for the vaccine can’t get it. Why? Because he insists on “equity” and has built so many restrictions on delivery the vaccine just sits on the shelf. Shameful.

Very few people want the shot. The alleged sickness has a %99.7 survival rate, the vaccine only has a %95 success rate,%5 chance of giving you bells palsy or another permanent disorder.
The “cure’ is more dangerous that the “sickness’

Have you seen the statistics in California? No more ICU beds, funeral homes are full, cases going up not down. Each state is different and we are in a crisis? And you’re crying because you can’t go to Mel’s to get a burger?

JM
And you believe all that BS?

Bring back Big Boy!

I will have a BIG BOY combo and a Sliver Goblet shake please.

Sorry to see good folks lose employment at Mels, possibly the menu was not conducive for take out or the in the parking lot with tent dining when that was available.

Be well –
Wear a mask please and get vaccinated when it comes to your turn…..it’s simple and patriotic.
Thank you 🙏

Second that!

Employment curve continues to flatten.

The last three times we ate at this Mel’s location, they messed up almost everything we ordered. On one visit, there was only one other table of customers in the restaurant. If you can’t get it right when you only have five customers, you’re probably never going to get it right. We haven’t been back since. Covid might not have been the problem here.

No COVID was definitely the reason they closed not because of your less than experience…

COVID just accelerated the inevitable. That place had gross food and crappy service. The amount of people crying about this s-hole has me gobsmacked; maybe they all had COVID years ago and their sense of taste and smell never returned.

any restaurant closure is sad. It is a very hard time for restaurants and I am trying to do my share with ordering take-out at least twice a week to support them.
But for this one it was clear they had issues. I ordered food to-go, twice and they messed it up both times, and big time. I made the decision not to order again the second time.
I agree with Palermo; bring back Bob’s big boy!

Well…. go ahead & do it Sideline, you and Palermo can invest your time and money into opening a new Bob’s Big Boy! (right in the middle of a pandemic)

Here you are: https://www.franchisegator.com/franchises/bobs-big-boy/

I did like Big Boy’s. I know that the Shoney’s chain went downhill when they split from the Big Boy franchise. I was quite happy to find a Bob’s Big Boy when we first moved to Concord.

@Dr.Jellyfinger
I am not able to answer “yes” to all the questions….

We used to eat here about 3 times a week! Then suddenly the service and food quality went down. The straw that broke the camels back was an extremely rude waitress. The coffee was full of grounds and just tasted off and I asked her if she could possibly brew another batch. She then says to me “well you sound like you have a cold so your taste buds are probably off” she was very rude and I told her no I do not have a cold and she said well it sounds like you have a cold. I then asked her if she went to medical school which I recognize was a little bit snotty but we never went back to eat there after such horrible service and food. I’m sorry that people have lost their jobs but the owners were clearly not receptive to feedback because if you look at their terrible score on yelp they never did anything in response to all of the issues and complaints

… similar service issues… ordered simple breakfast food.. not very busy…. employees standing around chatting the whole time…. brought my meal – it was cold – I told waitress… she said sorry – we’ve been busy – turned around and walked away… last time there about a year ago… not surprised at their closure…. Where was the owner watching all this?

I’m sorry to say I thought they closed permanently quite awhile ago.

That place was going to go down pandemic or not. Their food a service was horrible and didn’t even come close to the quality of the Walnut Creek Restaurant. The staff were never really attentive and the food was really subpar

“Sub-par” is good. Ask any golfer. It’s one of my pet peeves about the use of terminology. My problem, not yours.

We stopped going because they couldn’t get our orders right. And when they did which wasn’t very often in was under Cooked or over cooked.Without repeat business you won’t last long. Our go to places are still in business and doing well just on takeout.Good friendly service any great food.Sorry to see people loose there jobs.

The restaurant business has always been iffy, especially if there is only one house. It seems like every month year-round you read of an eatery closing somewhere. Also, there are probably a lot of shoestring businesses that wouldn’t make it past a dry spell. I would bet that some of the eateries that didn’t make it were opened by immigrants who are unable to find work because of skill or language difficulties. I notice that when interviewed on TV they serve ethnic food and speak with an accent.

Covid was the “straw”. It was a poorly run restuarant.

+1

Read the reviwes, this pandemic had nothing to do with there closing.

I went there a couple times lately and the service was horrible. The waitresses are kinda trashy and no one really hustles to get anything out. Ive always been a Nations or IHOP fan. Diggers is good too.

Maybe next time you plan on closing you should inform your employees they have families to feed and bills to pay it was very unfair to just tell the. That the restaurant is closed for good

Their, There, They’re….. (sigh)

Bob’s Big Boy.

Their restaurant was there a long time but now they’re gone.

Is Mel’s individually owned? I have not been to one in this area, but use to go to the one on Lombard in San Francisco, and have also been to one on the Peninsula, always good food, good service. Sounds like this one had problems and thus couldn’t survive this latest crisis.

There is one on North Main St. in Walnut Creek and it is very good! Much nicer than the one that just closed. It may be open for take out.

Not a surprise. I was so excited when they came here, however I was quickly disappointed. Food was not good. Service was even worse. I feel bad for the employees but it seems that customer service is a lost art. Add covid to the mix and it’s just a matter of time. Poor attitude no customer service skilled employees will be the death of any restaurant

Now this is news. Funny tho, dont think it came from a press release I dont see all the lifelong lafayette employees coming on here to make comments and launch personal attacks onppl who out them bc they have nothing better to do.

except federal and state employees are enjoying their taxpayer funded paychecks as they leave the taxpayers to die.

Let’s hope conservatives in Congress remember they’re supposed to help people by approving much-needed funds for the American people.

And no don’t worry, I’m not asking for myself. I don’t qualify for a check.

UNIPARTY DOESN’T CARE ABOUT YOU

It was gong to happen to this place eventually Covid just made it happen sooner. Loved the atmosphere but the food wasnt that great. Still sorry to see it go though. Really enjoyed going to the car shows thers.

Olive Garden! Feel bad for the workers, but, that place sucked from day one. Horribly ran business.

Sorry to see the end of Mels on Treat Rd. I have a couple of photos of the new Bobs Big Boy under construction back in 1976/1977 or so. The service was suffering before the pandemic hit,,, sad to say. As noted by many the Olive Garden 😂 would be nice…. but we think this location is a touch small for that pipe dream.

I wish the very best to the staff and crew –
Be well –

How about making it a Corn Snake sanctuary

@Concordite
Should send those old photos to the Claycord online museum.

My family frequented Mel’s, for us, food was always good, order correct (except early on in the beginnings of the societal close down), and prompt. Before, when we could dine inside, service was fair, about what I would expect from a hamburger joint.

Mel’s was good when I was in high school many moons ago….Since then it has gone down the tubes. RIP

Great open a Church’s Chicken , we need a good chicken place in Concord

Church’s Chicken ?
Yuck! Might as well have a Swanson’s frozen dinner.
Popeye’s & KFC are much better, but not great, Chic fil-A is way better than all those.
I would like to try “Raising Cane’s” Chicken Fingers.
I’ve heard lots of good things about them, but I think the closest one is in Reno…. their customers are kindly referred to as “Caniacs”.

Bring Back Coco’s!! 😂😭 It was there before Mel’s.

Not like I go to any restaurants since Steve died, but did with my precious daughter before Covid, but, my question is for the businesses and for our County, will our life “will this ever end?” My neighbors have entirely disappeared,

The one in Walnut Creek is fabulous.

Only ate there twice and don’t recall it being anything more than mediocre. Still, sorry to see another business go OUT of business.

Ordered Take Out from there a few times a few years ago. I live only 3 blocks away – by the time I got home the fries were cold and soggy; another time I ordered biscuits & gravy – should have opened the container in the restauarnt because when I got home I discovered barely enough gravy (which was also now cold) to cover even one of the biscuits! Haven’t been back since. Buh-bhy!!

The only thing worse then the food was the service, or lack off service. Coco’s wasn’t any better
I have been there in years and I only live a mile from there.

Everybody hates Trump and capitalism, but gets upset when they’re local businesses get shutdown by Gavin Newsom.

Listen here, all, just wear a a mask and this will all be over and over and over and over and over…………You dare resist govt confomity?Shame on you,by the shameful, now stop thinking and mask up!!!It’s that or or you’ll be in a pandemic of guilt trips flung at you.

what “privileges and things” are being taken away from people?
The right to breath freely?
nice try.
