So why have the total number of ICU beds available been reduced in the last couple of months? According to CCC website, in September there were 190-204 ICU beds available. Recently there have been a max of 184, and currently there are 165 (99 used and 66 available). Fewer beds available mean higher percentage of use! So the percentage of beds available is skewed, and this is what is putting us in lockdown? I realize we won’t have 100% usage at all times, but a 20% reduction is huge!
It comes down to staffing. ICUs generally require at least one nurse to every 2 patients, and some patients have 2:1 or 1:1 nursing. There also needs to be an adequate number of respiratory therapists and such.
ICU nursing is highly specialized. You can’t just pull nurses off a med/surg unit or pediatric ward to staff the ICU.
It’s my understanding that staffing is an issue, not the number of beds. You have to have people to staff the beds to have them in the count. Also, the State did not do any surge capacity planning with the counties. Here is a good article that explains ICU capacity: https://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/ICU-capacity-Bay-Area-stay-at-home-hospitals-COVID-15778598.php
That aside, Contra Costa has 40% of their ICU beds available today and has no business being in this business killing 4 week preemptive lockdown (which is longer than the 3 week state lockdown once the region is below 15% capacity). This is totally on the Board of Supervisors for allowing this.
Clayton – 1. It’s absurd we are allowing Herr Newsom to lock us down again. So let’s see: Dry winds: power shutdowns, alleged poor air: Spare The Air lockdown. I’m done buying what he is selling – and you should be too. https://noqreport.com/2020/12/07/scamdemic-gavin-newsoms-icu-trigger-is-below-average-december-icu-numbers/
Is there a Clayton hospital I am unaware of or do Clayton residents need to share the same hospitals Contra Costa County residents use?
We are being had.
99 beds icu beds occupied and 66 available. So our county is at 60% of capacity, is that correct? I understand the caution but we aren’t at the 85% threshold that the governor stated would trigger a stay at home order.
Santa Clara County reported 1,450 new cases today, along with 62 new hospitalizations. Santa Clara County’s explosion in numbers may result in a call for mutual aid that will result in a draw down of Contra Costa’s available hospital beds.
CONVID eradicated the flu

Please stop embarrassing yourselves with comments such as “the mask prevented me from getting flu”, you sound like a fool.
Debunk the CDC chart instead of using your communistic feelings.
Thanks for providing this information. It is much easier to understand since the County has gone to displaying COVID statistics by metrics. As other commenters have pointed out, discrepancies are more readily identified when raw data is provided.
Man, nobody is dying of anything else but covid these days LOL
Ah, but the ‘numbers’ speak for themselves, say the ones who make and publish the lists.
Therefore the leading puppets will ‘order’ a ‘lockdown’ on the general population, from which they unofficially exclude themselves.
The ‘lockdown’ is to be enforced by the police agencies they disrespected/bashed/defunded to appease the ‘protesters’.
The lockdown is to start today so everyone please, be good little citizens and cower in place until they come out with a new list of numbers to justify our release from the lockdown.
This pattern will continue into the near future, as they see fit, in order to comply with the agenda of their sponsors.

It is a crime against humanity to lie about hydroxychloroquine.
Academic medical fraud to the highest degree. Keeping a drug that would cure people is just plain evil.
Of course, because they don’t want a cure, they want to use this for thair own evil purpose of bringing about globalization. That’s why they made and released this ‘covid’. What better way to reduce aging population, destroy economies, close a lot of businesses so only a few remain that they can control, take full control of the general population and erase rights, and most importantly get rid of Trump by cheating in the election since he stands in their way because they can’t buy him out?
