QUESTION: It’s Black Friday. Did you go shopping (or do you plan to go shopping) today?

No. I never went shopping on Black Friday. Too crazy out there.

I have not left the house today and have no plans to do so. Didn’t do any shopping online, either. Christmas in the Chicken household is getting scaled back in every way, including gift giving.

Never have, never will. I already have everything I need, and saving a few bucks on items I do not need isn’t worth it to me. I don’t even shop for the cheapest gas, my time is more valuable than saving a couple of bucks.

Never do Black Friday shopping, but might do some Small Business on Saturday.

No. I went Black Friday shopping once at Emporium Capwells in the mid 90s. I found a $125 black suede jacket 80% off — $25.00. I still have that jacket, and it still fits. I walked in the door at 7 am, found a jacket within 5 minutes, and left. It was worth it, but that was before Black Friday was a madhouse. Or at least it wasn’t at Capwells.

I do shop cyber Monday online. It’s easy and convenient, and a lot of good deals.

Can’t – working.
Wouldn’t anyway.

We just went out and bought a Christmas tree

I’m really not a Black Friday type of shopper. I don’t do crowds voluntarily anymore if I can help it, and I like lines about as much as I like stop-and-go traffic (not at all), but I once went to a Best Buy a couple of blocks from my house and bought a “loss leader” TV. It wasn’t planned and I wasn’t even thinking about it being Black Friday. It was a little after 8:00 am and we happened to be driving past the store. They were open and it all looked surprisingly normal outside. Our TV had been recently stolen and my husband said “Hey, it’s Black Friday! We should get a TV”, and talked me into pulling in and parking in one of the many available spaces to have a look. We entered and immediately saw a small and rapidly diminishing stack of 32″ TVs in front of the entrance. He picked up the last Panasonic (the other brand was the same price, and I’d never heard of it before), we checked out with no wait and were gone in all of about 5 minutes. As we walked out we saw that the small stack of TVs on the floor was gone and many more people were there and arriving. Otherwise I haven’t shopped on Black Friday.

@ Silva~
That was awesome!
7 years ago, our stove was basically dead,…one of the brackets to the over door broke and it would either jam open or closed. Went to Friedman’s the day before Thanksgiving, just to look at stoves. They were placing signs on some floor models to sell on Black Friday.
I wanted a stove made in the USA, and to our surprise, the 36″ Thermador was 50% off! Granted, even at that price it was $4000, but it is still my dream stove to this day.

Oh yeah, good one Roz! It must be very nice having all that muscle, and you probably never have to shop for a stove!😊 Those look magnificent.

Under normal circumstances black friday shopping is bad for your mental health. This year now has the additional risk to your physical health. I’m staying home and relaxing.

I’ve never done the Black Friday thing. When my son started working for Sears, Black Friday was just another work day. Then, the sales, and their set-ups, kept getting earlier and earlier. Eventually, as Ops Manager, he brought in a cot to catch a nap between the big Thanksgiving Day sale and the Black Friday set-up. It’s funny how salaried managers are allowed to work 50, 60, 70, or more hours per week without the company complaining.

I may go to Home Depot for some lights, but only because the ones I have aren’t working. Nothing to do with Black Friday shopping; as a matter of fact, the only time I ever went was when the wife wanted me to take her. She would go in each store and I would stand in the mall and wait.

Nope, not in store or online.

I didn’t go out.

Not that I didn’t want to though.

I had too much-oiled wood burning in the back yard.

I need to keep dowsing it with kerosene to keep it burning.

Yes. At the French Laundry

No, I dislike shopping even at regular sales, and really the only crowds I enjoy are those at Fleet Week. But I did order some things online…. nothing “big”, though.

Hanne, did you work today? If so, I’ll wager you have experiences to share!

I did I worked from 3:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. we closed at 10, but we had to stay and kind of clean up the mess. I was in handbags, and it was busy, we were 2 people and only one register. Many bags are locked up, and designers bags we get from the stockroom, so take some time.
Most of the customers were nice and patient, since we didn’t have “Doorbusters” this year (to avoid crowd) it wasn’t as mad as other years.
I remember on incident from years ago, when I was still at Macy’s in Palo Alto. When the customer came up to the register, she said angrily, ” I have been in line for 10 minutes”, she was buying 3 pairs of socks, they were $5.98, not on sale, because when the price ends in 98 it is what is called everyday value and rarely goes on sale.

As for me shopping on Black Friday before I worked retail, rarely, I was often out of town or just busy with friends and family. When I was married and lived in Marin, my ex husband, daughter and I would go into San Francisco on Black Friday, we rarely bought anything, just window shopped and then went to lunch somewhere around Union Square.

I made one Black Friday purchase online today, from the comfort of my bed! Then, I went for a walk later and passed by The Royal Rooster, which I have not visited since last year (and I wondered how they were doing during COVID-19). I used to always support them on Small Business Saturday, but since I was right there today, I went inside and made a few purchases. There were good sales and the interior was lovely as always.

A great store! I was there recently, my 1st time. There’s so much good stuff in there.. a beautiful, fun place to shop!

I usually avoid shopping on Black Friday. I happened to be in Costco 7 years ago because we needed some things and they had a good deal on a Samsung cell phone and mine needed replacing, so I bought it. It’s the most recent time I’ve shopped on Black Friday.

Never. Not since the woman backed into me on purpose because she wanted the parking place I was waiting for another shopper to leave. It’s too crazy out there the day after Thanksgiving.

@Gittyup….I can guarantee that if someone did that to me, their car wouldn’t be leaving that parking spot without at least a side or back window broken out. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
