The average overall state of the Bay Area’s local roadways has held steady over the past five years and is described as “fair” in a report released this week by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission.
The report grades streets and roads inside cities and unincorporated county areas on a 100-point scale.
In 2019, the average overall score for the region’s 43,000 miles of such thoroughfares was 76 – the same it’s been since 2015, according to MTC.
That same year, 37 percent of roads were classified as “excellent or very good,” 33 percent were classified as “good or fair,” 9 percent were “at risk” and 21 percent were “poor or failed.”
Streets in fair condition are defined as “worn to the point where rehabilitation may be needed to prevent rapid deterioration,” according to MTC.
From 2010 through 2014, the region’s roadways held steady with a 66-point score, which is also considered fair.
So with all the tax increases (including gas tax), bridge fare hikes, ballot measures, DMV fees, toll lanes, etc, we’re still the same as the last 6 years and it’s been “fair” since 2010? Anyone with a commute knows that the MTC can’t smell what they’re shoveling.
it seems the tax increases just went to create those new toll lanes, and didnt fix any roads as nothing improved. Time to repeal the taxes.
NOT in Concord.
Fair compared to what, the original Overland Stage route?
The Oregon Trail. Caulk your wagon and ford that sucker!
I died of dysentery?
Again?
Exactly.
They must not have driven through the streets of Concord. Concord streets are in terrible condition. I grade them F F F F F F F
Drive down Willow Pass Rd. from Highway 4 to 680. Score=F
if you think maintaining a mediocre grade over 9 years is acceptable
you might be a democrat !
BAZINGA!!!
A+ For That
Well done!
The “You might be a Democrat if” list. This will add years to our lives in laughter………
If you’ve ever said “Ballot Harvesting is good for the environment”
You might be a Democrat.
What does politics have to do with street surfaces?
It may be a stretch, and we aren’t supposed to ask questions, but:
Why is it our tax increases are never spent on the subject for which the tax proposal was written and voted on?
I guess that’s sort of political.
The ratings must be for parking spots and not street.
That’s what happens when you lower the standards; Today’s fair was yesterday’s poor! This assessment follows the “give everyone an “A” approach”…
Fair?! Have they ever been to Texas and felt there super smooth nicely paved roads? We should use recycled tires for our roads like Arizona does.
Those recycled tire roads are wonderful! I wonder why we don’t get them.
Why doesn’t California recycle tires for roads? They claim to care so much about the environment. Oh wait, there’s no money to be made off used tires.
City streets take a much greater pounding today than what they were designed for back in the 50’s – 60’s. Back then, big rigs were limited to driving only on a few streets in town. Remember the signs that said “TRUCK ROUTE”? All deliveries were from box trucks.
New environmental laws made the old, good, tar based asphalt illegal and the early substitute materials were inferior. Remember when red painted curbs faded in months instead of years, and the day you went into the hardware store and all the spray paint shelves were empty?
Yes, that all happened – and more.
I smell a proposition for a tax increase. Fix The Road Proposition R. Vote yes for good roads!
.
Oakland’s streets are terrible… no bay area city should be lumped in with those idiots.
.
Concord should level and repave Concord Avenue between I-680 and Hwy 242. The washboarding is horrible.
.
Walnut Creek’s streets are best overall because they have a programmatic approach to renewing/repaving them. All other cities should take note how they do the public’s business.
Concord has the worst! It’s gotten so bad the whole city has just gone down hill.
In Europe they drive on the left side of the road. Here we drive on what’s left of the road!
